The most useful survival gadgets are the ones that address ordinary emergencies: a power outage, unsafe tap water, a blocked road, an injury, or an evacuation. Start with stored water, lighting, first aid, reliable information, and sanitation; add specialized equipment such as a satellite communicator only when your location or activities justify it. No gadget covers every hazard, and equipment works only when it is maintained and people know how to use it.
Build a kit around capabilities, not novelty
For most households, a realistic planning scenario is several days without power, limited or congested cellular service, disrupted roads, a boil-water advisory, and the possibility of evacuation. FEMA and Ready.gov preparedness guidance centers on essentials such as water, food, light, communications, first aid, hygiene, documents, medications, and household-specific needs—not a collection of tactical accessories. Here, “gadget” includes practical equipment and compact tools. It does not mean every item must have a battery. A hand tool or water container can be more valuable than an electronic device. Choose for your household, likely hazards, and whether the gear will stay at home, in a vehicle, or on your back.

1. Household water filter or purifier
Best for: Treating freshwater when municipal service is disrupted or an evacuation outlasts stored supplies.

A household gravity filter or squeeze system is generally more useful to a family than a personal drinking straw: it can produce water for several people without requiring each person to drink through a separate device. Check the exact product’s claims for bacteria, protozoa, viruses, chemicals, and heavy metals. “Filter” and “purifier” are not interchangeable, and a pore-size figure alone does not establish that water is safe.
For example, Sawyer describes the MINI as a 0.1-micron absolute hollow-fiber filter rated by the manufacturer for up to 100,000 gallons; those specifications are not a universal guarantee against every contaminant. Review its official product information and instructions. LifeStraw offers personal and gravity products, including a separate category marketed for virus removal; compare the precise product claims at its emergency-prep collection.
Limitations: Many hollow-fiber filters do not remove viruses, dissolved chemicals, fuel, salt, or every toxin. Boiling handles many biological hazards but does not remove many chemicals. Sediment can clog a filter, and freezing can damage some models. Keep untreated and treated water containers distinct, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning and storage directions.
2. Water storage containers
Best for: Having safe water immediately, before you need to find and treat another source.
Filtration does not replace a stored reserve. Choose food-grade containers with secure caps that household members can lift and use; inspect, clean, and rotate stored water according to the container and public-health guidance. A large rigid container suits a home better than a walking evacuation bag. Collapsible containers save space but can puncture and may be awkward to fill or carry. Plan separately for children, pets, heat, illness, and medication needs. FEMA’s emergency-kit guidance is a useful starting point.
3. NOAA Weather Radio with alert capability
Best for: Receiving official weather and hazard information when internet or cellular service is unreliable.
Verify that the specific model receives NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts and supports the alert features you need, such as location-based alerts. Look for battery operation and a loud alert; a hand crank or solar panel is a useful supplement, not a reason to ignore batteries. An “emergency radio” label by itself does not guarantee NOAA reception or alert functionality. Test reception where you plan to use it, since buildings and location can affect the signal. A radio provides information, not permission to ignore evacuation instructions.

4. Headlamp
Best for: Hands-free work during repairs, first aid, cooking, or nighttime movement.
Choose a comfortable model with useful low and high settings, water resistance, and either replaceable batteries or a rechargeable battery plus a practical backup plan. A lockout helps prevent accidental activation in storage; a red mode may be useful for preserving night vision, but dependable runtime matters more than an impressive maximum-lumen number. Keep compatible spare batteries or another working light. A handheld flashlight can complement a headlamp for searching or signaling.
5. USB power bank
Best for: Keeping phones and small rechargeable devices operating during a short outage.
Match capacity, USB-C input and output, and charging wattage to the devices and cables you actually own. Keep the required cable with the bank, inspect it periodically, and follow the maker’s guidance for storage and recharging. Several smaller banks may suit a household with multiple phones better than one bank that must be shared. A power bank is not a generator; it may not run medical equipment for long. The CDC recommends identifying backup power sources for personal devices and medical equipment; see its power-source guidance.
6. Portable power station
Best for: Supplying more energy for selected communications, lights, laptops, or compatible small devices at home or in a vehicle.
Compare usable watt-hours, continuous AC output, surge rating, weight, charging options, and the requirements of the exact device you intend to run. For medical equipment, check its actual power needs and runtime with the equipment provider; do not assume a station will support it. Solar input can extend use in suitable conditions, but output varies with sunlight, shade, season, panel position, and equipment limits.
As an example of the specifications to compare, Goal Zero lists its Yeti 700 at 677 Wh, 600 W AC output, 1,000 W surge, and 200 W solar input. Confirm current details on the manufacturer’s product collection. A station of this size may be useful at home but is far too heavy for most walking evacuations. Never run a fuel-burning generator indoors, in a garage, or where exhaust can enter a building; follow official local fire-safety guidance.

7. Satellite communicator
Best for: Two-way messaging and emergency coordination beyond reliable cellular coverage, especially during remote travel.

Garmin lists the unit at about 3.5 ounces and estimates up to 14 days of battery life at a 10-minute tracking interval with a full view of the sky; tree cover and more intensive tracking can shorten runtime. These are manufacturer figures, not a promise for every trip. Check the specifications and service information before buying: inReach communication requires an active satellite plan, and rules on satellite devices vary by jurisdiction.
It is a poor fit if you will not maintain the subscription or learn the device. Pair it with your phone if applicable, save key contacts, understand the SOS procedure, and test messages before departure. Buildings, canyon walls, and dense cover can obstruct satellite visibility and delay messages. SOS is not instant rescue or a guarantee that help can reach you.
8. First-aid and bleeding-control kit
Best for: Managing minor injuries and providing initial care while arranging professional help.
Start with gloves, gauze, bandages, tape, scissors, antiseptic supplies, and items suited to household needs such as blisters, burns, allergies, and chronic conditions. Add personal prescriptions, spare glasses, hearing-aid batteries, or infant and pet supplies as needed. Check expiration dates and replenish used items. A consumer kit may contain many small adhesive bandages but little for serious bleeding. Include advanced bleeding-control supplies only if users have learned how to use them. A kit does not replace medical care or training; ask a clinician or pharmacist about medications and individual needs.
9. Compact multitool
Best for: Small repairs and everyday tasks when a toolbox is unavailable.
Pliers, screwdrivers, a knife, file, wire cutters, and can opener are common useful tools. Prioritize sturdy construction and tools you can operate with cold or gloved hands. A multitool saves space, but it is slower and less capable than full-size tools; it is not a substitute for a proper wrench, saw, or specialized repair equipment. Knife rules vary across locations and settings, so check applicable restrictions before carrying one.

10. Fire-starting kit
Best for: Lighting a permitted outdoor fire or suitable stove when ordinary ignition methods fail.
Carry two independent ignition methods, such as a lighter and waterproof matches, plus dry tinder in protected packaging. A ferrocerium rod is an option only if you have practiced using it with suitable tinder. Check local fire restrictions and weather conditions. Never use a fire, stove, or fuel-burning appliance inside a tent, vehicle, or enclosed area unless it is specifically designed for that use and its instructions and safety requirements permit it; carbon monoxide can be fatal.

Best for: Reducing exposure to wind and rain during evacuation, a vehicle breakdown, or an unexpected night outdoors.
A bivy, tarp, or insulated sleeping system should match the local climate and user. Consider warmth, weather resistance, visibility, packability, and whether children or mobility-limited household members can use it. A thin reflective emergency blanket is compact, but it is not equivalent to an insulated sleeping bag and ground pad. Wet clothing, wind, and cold ground can still cause dangerous heat loss.
12. Navigation kit
Best for: Finding routes when phone power, GPS, roads, or digital maps are unavailable or unreliable.
Pair a baseplate compass with current local paper maps, a waterproof case, and a pencil. Download offline phone maps as another layer, and write down addresses, meeting places, and emergency contacts. A compass is useful only if you know how to use it, while roads, bridges, and shelters may change faster than printed maps. Practice route-finding before relying on either paper or digital navigation in an emergency.

A loud, compact whistle in a visible color is useful in a vehicle or pack; a signaling mirror can help in open terrain when sunlight and visibility allow. Keep the whistle accessible rather than buried in luggage. Use signals deliberately and conserve energy. These tools can attract attention but do not guarantee that rescuers will see or hear you.
14. Respiratory and eye protection
Best for: Reducing exposure to some airborne particles during cleanup or dusty conditions.
Choose correctly sized particulate respirators and protective eyewear, and keep them stored so they are not wet, crushed, or deformed. Particulate respirators do not protect against every gas or vapor and do not make an oxygen-deficient or chemically contaminated environment safe. Evacuate and follow official instructions when directed. Fit matters; facial hair can interfere with a seal, children need appropriate sizing, and people with respiratory conditions should consult a clinician about use during exertion.

15. Sanitation and waste-management supplies
Best for: Managing hygiene and human waste when plumbing or toilets are unavailable.
A portable toilet or seat, sturdy waste bags, absorbent material, handwashing supplies, and sealable storage can form part of a household plan. Add menstrual, incontinence, infant, and pet supplies as appropriate. Decide where waste will be stored and how it will be disposed of safely and legally; improvised containers can leak, and outdoor disposal can contaminate water or violate local rules. Hand sanitizer is useful, but it does not replace handwashing with soap and water when that is available. FEMA’s checklist treats hygiene and household-specific supplies as preparedness essentials.

Do not start by buying all 15 items. Ready.gov suggests beginning with items many households already own, such as flashlights, batteries, water, nonperishable food, documents, and camping gear; see its low- and no-cost preparedness guidance. A sensible order is:
- Water: Store a reserve in suitable containers, then add a treatment option matched to likely sources and contaminants.
- Light and first aid: Make sure every household member can find a light and basic supplies quickly; include personal medications.
- Weather information and communications: Set up a way to receive local alerts and keep a phone charged.
- Sanitation and warmth: Plan for toilets, hygiene, and exposure, not only food and electronics.
- Tools, navigation, and specialized gear: Add what your home, vehicle, work, or travel plans actually require. A satellite communicator is usually a higher priority for remote travel than for an urban household with reliable local coverage.
For a tight budget, basic containers, a dependable light, spare batteries, a whistle, simple first aid, a lighter and matches, and a compatible power bank can cover multiple needs. In a middle tier, consider a suitable water filter, a weather radio, household-specific medical supplies, and a vehicle kit. More expensive purchases—such as a power station or satellite communicator—make sense only after checking the accessories, recurring costs, service plan, and actual use case. Prices, availability, and plans change; check the manufacturer or seller before purchasing.

Test and maintain the kit
Every three months, or more often if a device or season calls for it, run a simple readiness check:
- Turn on each light and radio; check that alerts and reception work where the gear is stored.
- Recharge power banks and inspect cables, adapters, and the devices they are meant to support.
- Inspect stored water and containers; maintain filters exactly as the manufacturer directs, and protect models that can be damaged by freezing.
- Check first-aid supplies, prescriptions, and expiration dates; replace used or damaged items.
- Practice setting up shelter, using navigation tools, and operating a stove outdoors where permitted.
- Test satellite messaging and review subscription status before a remote trip.
- Rotate seasonal clothing and supplies, and ensure every household member knows where essential gear is kept.
Gear is one part of preparedness. Plans, current contact information, copies of important documents, local alerts, and skills matter too. For households with medical devices, disabilities, young children, older adults, or pets, build around those needs rather than assuming a generic kit will be sufficient.
