There is no single best JavaScript table library for every application: the right choice depends on whether you want table logic without a UI, an enhancement to existing HTML, a ready-made data grid, or a spreadsheet-like editing surface. This shortlist compares 15 options by architecture, framework fit, workflow, customization, and licensing so you can narrow the field before prototyping.
What “JavaScript table library” can mean
These products do different jobs, so a checklist of features alone can be misleading. A headless library supplies data and interaction logic but leaves the UI to your team. An HTML-table enhancer adds behavior to semantic markup. A grid component supplies a more complete interface, while spreadsheet-oriented components are designed for users who edit tabular data. Some broader UI suites include a grid among many other components.
- Headless table logic: TanStack Table is the clearest example. You build markup, styling, and presentation around its logic.
- Enhancement of existing tables: DataTables works with HTML tables and adds interactions such as sorting, filtering, and paging.
- Data-grid components: AG Grid, MUI X Data Grid, Tabulator, RevoGrid, and others provide grid-oriented interfaces and configuration.
- Spreadsheet-like editing: Handsontable is aimed at workflows where people manipulate data in a familiar tabular surface.
- Broader component suites: KendoReact, DevExtreme, Webix, and DHTMLX offer a grid within a larger product family.
TanStack’s documentation describes headless UI as libraries that provide logic, state, processing, and APIs for interactions without supplying markup, styles, or prebuilt implementations (TanStack Table overview). That distinction is a practical estimate of implementation work: headless tools give more design ownership, but your team must build more of the experience.

| Webix | A JavaScript UI library that includes data-grid functionality; relevant if you are assessing a wider component library. | Check the current grid capabilities and license terms for your deployment. |
| DHTMLX Grid | DHTMLX documents a JavaScript DataGrid/DataTable widget and belongs in a comparison of commercial UI component suites. | Validate current features and licensing for the intended use. |
Choose by framework and design ownership
If you need the UI to match a custom product
Start with TanStack Table when your team wants to own the rendered table rather than adopt a supplied grid interface. Its headless approach can work across frameworks through documented adapters, but the tradeoff is real: you implement the markup, styles, and interaction states yourself. This option suits teams with established design systems and front-end capacity.
#1 Best Overall
If you want a component in a specific framework
For React, compare MUI X Data Grid, Syncfusion React Data Grid, Comcast React Data Grid, KendoReact Grid, and DevExtreme DataGrid. They are not interchangeable simply because they render rows and columns: consider your existing component system, required features, support expectations, and license boundaries. RevoGrid’s Web Component core and Tabulator’s plain-JavaScript API are alternatives when you want a different integration shape.
If content already lives in a semantic HTML table
DataTables is a direct candidate when you want to add common interactions to table markup instead of replacing it with a fully custom grid. Test the actual extensions and styling integration your page requires; “works with HTML tables” does not by itself settle every integration detail.
Rank #2
Choose by what users do with the data
Primarily reading, sorting, and filtering
For a read-oriented view, compare DataTables with a prebuilt grid such as AG Grid, Tabulator, MUI X, or RevoGrid. The decision is less about how many features a product lists and more about which interactions your users need, how those interactions fit the application, and whether you want to build or configure the UI.

Editing individual values or working in a spreadsheet pattern
Handsontable is the most explicit match in this group for spreadsheet-like interaction and editable tabular workflows. Tabulator and RevoGrid also document editing, while AG Grid and other grid suites may be relevant depending on the feature tier. Confirm the exact editing behavior, validation, selection, and licensing in the current product documentation rather than assuming every grid offers the same workflow.
Large or frequently updated data
Virtual rendering is a useful capability to investigate, not proof that a library will perform best for your workload. Tabulator documents virtual DOM rendering, and RevoGrid documents virtual rows and columns. Compare candidates using representative row and column counts, update patterns, browser versions, and target devices; no neutral same-workload benchmark across these 15 options establishes a universal performance winner.
Assess licensing before you commit
Open-source availability and commercial feature tiers are not the same thing. AG Grid separates its MIT Community edition from Enterprise; MUI X distinguishes its MIT Community components from Pro and Premium capabilities; RevoGrid has an MIT-licensed core alongside separately licensed Pro offerings. Syncfusion documents license-key registration. For the remaining commercial-suite options, confirm current editions and terms with the vendor.
Rank #4
- Write down the exact features your application needs, then map each to the applicable edition.
- Check whether your deployment and organization meet the license terms, including any registration or attribution requirements.
- Recheck terms and prices at adoption time; this comparison does not quote prices because they can change.
- Keep license choice separate from architecture choice: a free core may still require paid capabilities for your use case.
Prototype and compare without overcommitting
- Define the table’s job. Specify read-only versus editing use, sorting and filtering needs, selection, grouping, pagination, and whether users work locally or with remote data.
- Fix the integration constraints. Record your framework, design system, accessibility requirements, and whether your team prefers supplied UI or custom markup.
- Build one representative slice. Use realistic columns, data shapes, interactions, and update behavior rather than a toy table with a few static rows.
- Measure the workload that matters. Test initial render, scrolling, sorting, filtering, edits, and updates at the data sizes and on the devices your users actually encounter.
- Check maintenance and licensing. Confirm the active package, framework compatibility, release and migration guidance, license tier, and support path in the project’s current documentation.
Do not infer a winner from vendor performance claims or the presence of a “virtual” rendering feature. The useful comparison is a reproducible prototype with your actual data and interactions.

Best Value
- TanStack Table for React:
npm install @tanstack/react-table. For direct JavaScript core use, the project provides@tanstack/table-core. - AG Grid JavaScript: its current installation guidance uses
ag-grid-community; Enterprise is a separate package. Check the current docs for framework setup and version-specific instructions. - DataTables: the documented npm package is
datatables.net-dt; the project also documents a browser CDN route.
Installation alone does not complete a usable table: configure columns, data, rendering, and the interactions your application needs, then check the product documentation for the relevant adapter or component.
Or skip the browser setup: capture a table page with ScreenshotNeo
If your next step is documenting or reviewing how a table looks on a live website, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server—not a table library. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. For example, save a screenshot of a page containing your table:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. The service accepts cookie or consent banners and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses include X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
