There is no universally best database. Choose one based on the workload: transactions, query shape, data model, latency, scale, geography, recovery requirements, and the operational capacity of your team.
For most business applications, start with PostgreSQL or MySQL. Choose a specialized database only when a clearly dominant need—such as graph traversal, full-text search, time-series ingestion, vector retrieval, or large-scale analytics—justifies the added complexity.

OLTP versus OLAP
OLTP systems serve concurrent users with small reads and writes, point lookups, updates, constraints, and predictable latency. PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite, MongoDB, and DynamoDB are common choices.
OLAP systems scan historical data, perform large aggregations, and support complex analytical queries. Snowflake, BigQuery, and Databricks are designed for this class of work.
A database that is excellent for dashboards may be a poor checkout backend, while a database optimized for checkout transactions may be inefficient for scanning years of events.
Quick decision table
| Database | Model | Best fit | Avoid when |
|---|---|---|---|
| PostgreSQL | Relational, extensible SQL | General-purpose transactional applications | Graph, search, or extreme distributed-write workloads dominate |
| MySQL | Relational SQL | Web, SaaS, content, and commerce systems | Data is being treated as an unstructured document store |
| SQLite | Embedded relational | Mobile, desktop, edge, tests, and local-first apps | Many remote writers or multi-node failover are required |
| MongoDB | Document | Nested, flexible application records | Cross-entity joins and constraints dominate |
| DynamoDB | Key-value/document | Known access patterns and serverless scale | Ad hoc queries and joins are central |
| Redis/Valkey | In-memory key-value | Caches, sessions, rate limits, and ephemeral state | It must be the sole durable system of record |
| Cassandra | Wide-column | High-volume distributed writes | Queries are unpredictable or relational |
| Neo4j | Property graph | Fraud, recommendations, identity, and dependencies | Ordinary CRUD is the main workload |
| InfluxDB | Time-series | Metrics, telemetry, and timestamped measurements | Mutable business records and joins dominate |
| Elasticsearch | Search and analytics | Full-text search, logs, and faceted retrieval | It is being used as the transactional source of truth |
| OpenSearch | Search and analytics | Open search, logs, dashboards, and vector search | The team cannot operate a search cluster |
| Pinecone | Vector | Semantic search and retrieval-augmented generation | All application state is being stored as vectors |
| Snowflake | Cloud warehouse | Governed enterprise analytics | Low-latency OLTP is required |
| BigQuery | Serverless warehouse | Large-scale analytical SQL | Frequent row-level transactions dominate |
| Databricks | Lakehouse and data platform | Data engineering, ML, and AI pipelines | A small CRUD app needs only one operational database |
1. PostgreSQL: the strongest general-purpose default
PostgreSQL is a sensible starting point for SaaS applications, billing, orders, inventory, permissions, multi-tenant software, and systems requiring joins and constraints.
It combines ACID transactions, foreign keys, rich SQL, JSONB, full-text capabilities, extensions, custom types, and mature tooling. Its index families include B-tree, Hash, GiST, SP-GiST, GIN, and BRIN; the right choice depends on the query and data distribution. See the PostgreSQL index documentation.
It is not automatically optimal for globally distributed writes, deep graph traversals, search relevance, or extremely high-volume telemetry. “Can support” does not mean “is the best fit at every scale.”
2. MySQL: pragmatic web infrastructure
MySQL remains a practical choice for conventional web applications, content systems, e-commerce, and teams with established MySQL expertise. Its SQL ecosystem, hosting availability, drivers, and operational knowledge are major advantages.

Choose it because it fits the team and platform—not simply because it is associated with web development. Engine-specific behavior, replication, and managed-service features should be evaluated for the exact deployment.
3. SQLite: embedded, not a network database
SQLite is excellent for mobile and desktop applications, local-first software, edge devices, command-line tools, tests, prototypes, and small single-process services. It is transactional, zero-administration, and stored in a single file.
It is not designed as a general-purpose multi-writer database behind many application servers. Sharing a SQLite file over a network filesystem is a common failure mode.
4. MongoDB: when the document is the unit of work
MongoDB fits catalogs with variable attributes, profiles, content, metadata, and aggregates that are usually read and written together. Embedded nested data can closely match application objects.
Its flexibility does not mean “no schema.” Validation, application code, versioned documents, and downstream consumers still impose a schema. Duplication can simplify reads but complicate updates. Highly relational data with extensive joins and cross-record constraints may be better served by PostgreSQL or MySQL.
5. Amazon DynamoDB: known access patterns at scale
DynamoDB is suited to serverless APIs, carts, device state, preferences, and high-volume key-value or document workloads where access patterns are understood in advance. AWS offers on-demand and provisioned capacity models; costs can include reads, writes, storage, backups, streams, global tables, and optional features. Check the current pricing page rather than relying on a universal monthly estimate.
Its design begins with partition keys and access patterns, not normalized entities. Ad hoc queries, joins, secondary indexes, and hot partitions can make it a poor fit.

6. Redis or Valkey: fast state and caching
Redis and Valkey are useful for response caches, sessions, rate limits, leaderboards, queues, streams, and short-lived coordination. In-memory data structures can provide very low latency for suitable key-based operations.
Memory costs more than disk, and persistence, eviction, replication, failover, and recovery require explicit design. Do not make a cache the only source of truth unless its durability and data-loss behavior are treated as first-class requirements.
7. Cassandra: distributed writes with partition-first modeling
Apache Cassandra fits high-volume ingestion, globally distributed workloads, and predictable queries organized by tenant, device, account, or time range. Wide-column systems can provide high throughput and horizontal scale, as described in AWS’s workload guidance.
Partition keys, partition size, tombstones, compaction, repair, and consistency settings matter. Cassandra is not a safe choice merely because an application might become large. Choose it when the current availability and write model justify its operational complexity.
8. Neo4j: when relationships are the product
Neo4j is a strong fit for fraud rings, recommendations, identity relationships, dependency maps, knowledge graphs, and path analysis. Relationships are first-class, making some traversals clearer than repeated relational joins.
Do not use a graph database merely because an application contains foreign keys. Most relational applications have relationships; graph technology is justified when traversal is the dominant query.
9. InfluxDB: timestamped measurements
InfluxDB is designed for metrics, IoT telemetry, sensor data, industrial monitoring, and time-window aggregation. Retention and downsampling are useful for continuously arriving measurements.

High-cardinality tags can cause cost and performance problems. A customer or order table does not become time-series data simply because it has a created_at column.
10. Elasticsearch: search and analytical indexing
Elasticsearch fits full-text search, product search, log analysis, observability, relevance ranking, filters, and aggregations. Its inverted indexes and text analysis are its core strengths.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Usually keep the canonical record in an operational database and publish a searchable representation to Elasticsearch. Plan for indexing lag, duplicate events, retries, deleted records, replays, and reindexing. Mapping changes may require rebuilding indexes.
11. OpenSearch: open search and observability
OpenSearch is suited to search, dashboards, log analytics, observability, and some vector-retrieval workloads, particularly in AWS-oriented or open-source-focused environments. AWS lists OpenSearch among options for horizontally scalable vector search.
It still requires expertise in mappings, shards, replicas, heap, reindexing, and cluster operations. API compatibility with Elasticsearch should be verified for the exact version and plugins.

Pinecone is designed for semantic search, retrieval-augmented generation, similarity recommendations, matching, and deduplication. Its documentation covers ingestion options such as Parquet files in object storage; consult its current pricing for costs.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsA vector database does not replace application records. Retrieval quality depends on chunking, metadata filters, embedding models, freshness, hybrid search, reranking, and evaluation. PostgreSQL with pgvector, MongoDB, OpenSearch, and other systems can also support vector retrieval, so a dedicated service should solve a demonstrated scaling or operational problem.

13. Snowflake: analytical platform, not OLTP
Snowflake fits enterprise reporting, governed analytics, data sharing, ELT, and historical business intelligence. Its platform separates analytical compute and storage and supports databases, schemas, tables, and views.
It is not normally the right home for authentication sessions, shopping carts, or latency-sensitive order writes. Compute, storage, replication, search optimization, and AI-related services can have separate costs; see the Snowflake service types documentation.
14. BigQuery: serverless analytical SQL
BigQuery suits event analytics, exploration, reporting, and large-scale SQL. Its serverless model reduces infrastructure management, but partitioning, clustering, streaming, retention, and scan volume affect cost. Review the current pricing model.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchHigh-frequency row-by-row transactions and low-latency APIs usually belong in an operational database instead.
15. Databricks: lakehouse, engineering, and AI platform
Databricks is suited to lakehouse architectures, Spark workloads, data engineering, streaming, machine learning, notebooks, and AI pipelines. It is a broader platform than most application teams need for basic CRUD.
Its documentation includes PostgreSQL-compatible and pgvector-related capabilities in relevant products, illustrating the convergence between operational databases, analytics, and AI. That does not make every Databricks deployment a replacement for an application database.
How to choose
- Identify the source of truth. For money, permissions, orders, inventory, and identity, begin with a durable transactional design.
- Classify the dominant query. Joins suggest relational SQL; nested aggregates suggest documents; key lookups suggest key-value; traversals suggest graphs; time windows suggest time-series; relevance suggests search; similarity suggests vectors; large scans suggest a warehouse.
- Define performance precisely. Record p50, p95, and p99 latency, throughput, payload size, geography, consistency, and peak load.
- Test failure conditions. Consider traffic spikes, hot partitions, empty caches, delayed indexing, stale embeddings, missing indexes, failover, and oversized analytical scans.
- Prototype the riskiest operation. Test a representative transaction, worst partition, largest document, real search language, vector workload, restore, and failover—not just a trivial insert.
- Add systems narrowly. Use a second database only when its benefit is measurable.
Data modeling matters more than the category label
Normalization reduces duplication and protects integrity. Denormalization optimizes known reads. Embedding stores related data together; referencing stores relationships separately. Partitioning and sharding distribute data, while indexes accelerate reads at storage and write cost. Materialized views precompute query-friendly representations.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →A realistic architecture may use PostgreSQL as the authority, Redis for hot state, OpenSearch for search, a warehouse for analytics, and a vector index for semantic retrieval. That can be appropriate, but every added system brings credentials, backups, monitoring, synchronization, security, and failure-recovery work.
Common mistakes
- “NoSQL scales better.” Scale depends on data distribution, query shape, consistency, indexes, and partition design.
- “Flexible schema means no schema.” Uncontrolled document variation eventually becomes a migration problem.
- “Managed means maintenance-free.” Query tuning, recovery tests, cost control, access policies, and lifecycle management remain your responsibility.
- “Search is the source of truth.” Search indexes are usually derived and must support replay and reindexing.
- “Vector search solves RAG.” Retrieval also depends on chunking, metadata access control, embeddings, reranking, freshness, and evaluation.
- “One database should do everything.” One capable primary database is a good default, but narrowly justified supporting systems can be sensible.
Migration and exit strategy
Before committing, check export formats, change-data-capture support, backfill options, dual-write risks, downtime tolerance, reindexing, data deletion, retention, compatibility, regional requirements, and vendor lock-in. The hardest database operation is often not inserting data; it is recovering, migrating, reindexing, or controlling cost under failure.
Bottom line
If you do not have a demonstrated reason to choose a specialized system, start with PostgreSQL or MySQL based on team expertise and platform constraints. Add Redis/Valkey, search, vector, time-series, graph, or analytical systems only when the workload’s access pattern and operational requirements make the separation worthwhile.
