Quick verdict: For many gaming laptops, an authentic Honeywell PTM7950 sheet is the strongest long-term choice when you can confirm the original interface and required thickness. For conventional paste, choose ARCTIC MX-6 for value, Noctua NT-H2 for the easiest low-risk installation, or Thermalright TFX for a very viscous direct-die application. Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut remains a premium fresh-performance option, but a desktop temperature ranking does not automatically predict the best long-term laptop result.
PTM7950 is a phase-change material, not ordinary grease. Laptop CPUs and GPUs often contact the heatsink directly through a bare die, use shared heat pipes, and experience repeated thermal cycling. Those details make mounting pressure, bond-line thickness, pump-out resistance and the condition of the rest of the cooling system at least as important as a printed W/m·K number.

Desktop processors usually have an integrated heat spreader. A laptop processor or graphics chip may expose a small bare die directly to a thin heatsink or vapor chamber. The cooler may also contact VRAM and VRM components through separate pads or putty. Consequently, a compound that wins a desktop chart can perform differently on a laptop.
#1 Best Overall
- CONSISTENT QUALITY: Our thermal paste packaging design has evolved over time, but the formula has remained the same, ensuring reliable performance.
- EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE: ARCTIC MX-4 thermal paste is made of carbon microparticles, guaranteeing extremely high thermal conductivity. This ensures that heat from the CPU/GPU is dissipated quickly & efficiently
- SAFE APPLICATION: The MX-4 is metal-free and non-electrical conductive which eliminates any risks of causing short circuit, adding more protection to the CPU and VGA cards
- HIGH DURABILITY: In contrast to metal and silicon thermal compound, the MX-4 does not compromise over time. Once applied, you do not need to apply it again as it will last at least for 8 years
- EASY TO APPLY: With an ideal consistency, the MX-4 is very easy to use, even for beginners
- High viscosity can help a direct-die interface maintain coverage during expansion and contraction.
- Uneven heatsink flatness and screw pressure determine the final bond-line thickness.
- Shared heat pipes mean CPU and GPU loads influence each other.
- Repeated thermal cycling can move conventional paste away from a die (pump-out), but no fixed replacement interval is established for every formula or laptop.
Thermal conductivity figures are manufacturer measurements made with different methods, thicknesses and pressures. Honeywell lists PTM7950 at 8.5 W/m·K and thicknesses of 0.2, 0.25, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5 mm; Thermalright lists TFX at 14.3 W/m·K. Those numbers cannot form a scientifically valid league table without matching interface-resistance tests. Tom’s Hardware offers useful comparative work, but its methodology is primarily desktop-oriented: see its test methodology.
When replacing laptop paste is actually necessary
Do not open a laptop solely because it feels warm. First record the ambient temperature, idle and load temperatures, clock speeds, fan behavior, power mode and whether throttling occurs. Compare the same workload before and after any service.
A repaste may help
- Dust has been removed but the machine still reaches unusually high temperatures and loses clocks.
- Fans run hard while the heatsink exhaust is restricted by old compound or poor contact.
- An older machine has clearly degraded, dried or displaced interface material.
A repaste will not repair these faults
- Blocked fins, a failing fan or a damaged heat pipe.
- Incorrect screw torque, warped metal, missing springs or poor heatsink contact.
- Missing or incorrectly sized VRAM/VRM pads or putty.
- Firmware-imposed CPU/GPU power limits, fan curves, adapter limits or battery limits.
Check the service manual and warranty terms before disassembly. A laptop that has never been opened may still have warranty coverage, and a lower temperature cannot overcome a deliberate power target.

Paste, phase-change sheet, pad or putty?
Conventional paste
Paste is a liquid or semi-liquid compound whose final performance depends on a thin, continuous layer and even mounting pressure. It is appropriate for a CPU or GPU die when the heatsink is designed for paste.
Phase-change material
A phase-change sheet is solid at room temperature and softens during operation to fill microscopic irregularities. Honeywell positions PTM7950 for notebook and gaming-system CPU/GPU applications: manufacturer information. It can be more resistant to pump-out over repeated cycles, but it must be the correct thickness and evenly clamped. Some products require a heat cycle before reaching their intended state.
Thermal pads and putty
Pads or putty fill larger gaps around memory and voltage-regulation components. They are not interchangeable with die paste. A thicker replacement can lift the heatsink away from the CPU/GPU; a thinner one can leave another component without contact.

Product guidance by use case
Best long-term choice: Honeywell PTM7950
Choose PTM7950 when the laptop originally used a phase-change interface, the service documentation or measurements establish the thickness, and you can obtain genuine material. Honeywell lists a −55°C to 150°C operating range and the thicknesses above in its technical documentation: technical application note. Honeywell’s industrial material may not arrive in ordinary consumer packaging. Marketplace listings using the name “PTM7950” do not by themselves prove origin.
Best conventional value: ARCTIC MX-6
MX-6 is highly viscous, non-drying and non-bleeding, with ARCTIC’s stated continuous-use range of −50°C to 150°C. ARCTIC says the heatsink should distribute it under mounting pressure and specifically says not to spread it with a spatula. Use a small amount suited to the die rather than a desktop-sized blob.
Best first-time repair: Noctua NT-H2
NT-H2 is designed for easy application and long-term stability. Noctua reports up to 2°C lower results than NT-H1 in its standardized internal comparison, not against every competing paste. The 10 g package is listed for approximately 9–60 applications depending on CPU size. Noctua explicitly states that NT-H1 and NT-H2 are non-conductive and suitable for laptops.

- MARKET LEADER - Proven through extensive testing, the top choice in the market meets the highest quality standards, satisfying not only standard computer users but also passionate overclocking enthusiasts
Best viscous direct-die option: Thermalright TFX
TFX suits an enthusiast who can mount a very viscous compound carefully. Thermalright lists 14.3 W/m·K conductivity, impedance below 0.0028°C·cm²/W, a 6.2 g package and a non-conductive formulation. These are manufacturer claims, not an independent laptop ranking. Its consistency makes thin, even coverage and gradual screw tightening especially important.
Best premium fresh-performance option: Kryonaut or Kryonaut Extreme
Kryonaut is aimed at demanding cooling and is listed as electrically non-conductive by Thermal Grizzly. It can make sense when the priority is a premium conventional compound and the seller is trustworthy. Kryonaut Extreme costs more and generally offers diminishing practical returns in a laptop whose heatsink, fan curve or power limit is the bottleneck.
Other credible conventional choices
CryoFuze 7, TF8, TF7, NT-H1, MX-4, GC-Extreme and PK-3 are reasonable alternatives when availability or price favors them. Select the sealed, correctly identified product from an established seller. Prolimatech describes PK-3 as non-conductive, non-corrosive and low-dry-out; Gelid identifies GC-Extreme as a 3.5 g compound, with DigiKey listing an 8.5 W/m·K manufacturer specification. Neither specification substitutes for a laptop-specific test.

Retail phase-change alternatives
Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM and Thermalright Heilos Solid Thermal Interface Sheet V2 can be easier to identify than anonymous marketplace sheets. Confirm each product’s thickness, dimensions and installation instructions. Do not call either product identical to Honeywell PTM7950 unless its manufacturer explicitly says so.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Electrical safety and liquid metal
For ordinary laptop repair, prefer a material whose electrical behavior is clearly documented as non-conductive. Noctua documents NT-H1 and NT-H2 as non-conductive; Thermal Grizzly lists Kryonaut at 0 pS/m. If a listing does not clearly identify the formulation, treat it as unknown and avoid it.
Liquid metal belongs in a separate expert-only category, not as the next item in a normal paste ranking. Its electrical conductivity, migration, spill, corrosion and warranty risks are substantial, especially around a bare die and nearby components. It can deliver excellent temperatures, but it is not the default recommendation for an inexperienced laptop owner.

How to repaste a laptop safely
Before opening
- Confirm the exact model, service manual and warranty implications.
- Record baseline temperatures, clocks, fan speeds, ambient temperature, workload and power mode.
- Photograph the heatsink, every pad and each putty location. Buy replacement pads or putty only after confirming their thickness.
- Shut down fully, unplug the charger and disconnect the internal battery where the service procedure permits.
Removing and cleaning
- Loosen heatsink screws in the numbered sequence, if marked.
- Lift gently. If old compound acts like adhesive, warm the assembly through normal operation beforehand when the service manual permits; never force a stuck heatsink.
- Do not scrape a bare die with a metal tool or disturb pads that do not need replacement.
- Use lint-free material and high-purity isopropyl alcohol suitable for electronics. Avoid flooding the board, remove all fibers and let surfaces dry completely.
Applying conventional paste
- Use a small amount matched to the die footprint; a desktop pea-size rule is not universal for tiny laptop dies.
- For MX-6, follow ARCTIC’s instruction to let mounting pressure spread the compound rather than using a spatula.
- Set the heatsink down squarely so it cannot slide the compound off the die.
- Tighten gradually in a cross pattern or the manufacturer’s numbered order. Stop at firm contact; do not overtighten.
Applying a phase-change sheet
- Confirm the exact thickness. Honeywell’s listed thicknesses are not interchangeable.
- Cut coverage for the die without excessive overhang or a shortage at the edges.
- Identify both protective films before removing either one. Avoid fingerprints, wrinkles, stretching and contamination.
- Place the sheet flat, clamp the heatsink evenly and follow the product’s heat-cycle or activation instructions.
After reassembly
- Reconnect the battery, display and fan cables, then verify that the fan spins.
- Run a short, controlled load at the same power and ambient conditions used for the baseline.
- Compare clocks, fan behavior and throttling as well as peak temperature.
- Stop immediately if temperatures are worse, the system shuts down or a fan is not detected.
Common mistakes that make temperatures worse
- Changing pad thickness by guesswork: a 2 mm pad substituted for a 1 mm pad can prevent die contact.
- Using paste in a gap: thick mounds of die paste are not a substitute for the specified pad or putty.
- Ignoring contact mechanics: a warped cooler, missing spring or uneven torque defeats an expensive compound.
- Overlooking power limits: a cooler CPU may not run faster when firmware, VRM temperature or the GPU power target is the limiting factor.
- Overfilling a tiny die: overflow can contaminate nearby components, while too little leaves dry areas.
- Buying an unverified sheet: inconsistent branding, thickness, packaging or an implausibly low price is a reason to reject a listing.
Choosing in one minute
| Your situation | Choose | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Factory phase-change sheet and verified thickness | Honeywell PTM7950 or a clearly identified equivalent | Preserves the interface style and prioritizes thermal-cycle consistency. |
| First laptop repair | Noctua NT-H2 | Easy application and documented non-conductivity. |
| Best value conventional paste | ARCTIC MX-6 | High viscosity and broad availability. |
| Direct-die enthusiast work | Thermalright TFX | Very viscous, non-conductive formulation; application takes care. |
| Premium fresh benchmark | Kryonaut or Kryonaut Extreme | Premium conventional option, with no promise of superior longevity. |
| No trustworthy PTM source | MX-6, NT-H2 or TFX | A sealed conventional product is safer than an unverified sheet. |
| CPU/GPU heatsink gaps around memory or VRM | The specified pad or suitable thermal putty | Paste is not a gap-filling replacement. |
Expectations should remain model-specific: dust condition, ambient temperature, fan profile, heatsink pressure, original material and firmware power limits can outweigh the difference between reputable compounds. Judge the repair by sustained clocks, throttling and fan behavior—not a single peak-temperature reading.
