The Sony WF-1000XM6 is the best overall Sony earbud for 2026, combining premium sound, strong noise cancellation, multipoint, LDAC, wireless charging, and up to eight hours of playback with ANC enabled. It is not automatically the best choice for every listener, however. The LinkBuds Fit is better for exercise, LinkBuds Open and LinkBuds Clip keep you aware of your surroundings, and the WF-C710N delivers Sony ANC at a lower tier.
This guide covers current U.S. models plus older earbuds that may still be worthwhile at clearance prices. Prices and availability marked below were observed on August 16, 2026, and can change. Older models require particular caution because battery age may matter more than the advertised specifications.

1. Sony WF-1000XM6 — best overall
The WF-1000XM6 is Sony’s premium flagship and the safest recommendation for listeners who want one pair to handle music, travel, commuting, calls, and everyday use. It supports SBC, AAC, LDAC, and LC3, Bluetooth 5.3, multipoint, wireless charging, and IPX4 water resistance. Sony rates it for up to eight hours with noise canceling enabled and up to 12 hours with ANC disabled; communication figures are separate from music playback.

Its sound, feature set, and noise cancellation are excellent, although independent reviews do not completely agree on how far its ANC leads competing flagships. “Among the best” is more accurate than “unbeatable.” See Sony’s full specifications and reviews from TechRadar, What Hi-Fi?, and Android Central.
Buy it if: you want Sony’s most complete current earbud. Skip it if: you need an open design, a secure sports fit, or a low price.
2. Sony WF-1000XM5 — best discounted premium option
The WF-1000XM5 remains a capable premium earbud with ANC, LDAC, multipoint, wireless charging, and a compact sealed design. It is no longer Sony’s flagship in 2026, but it can be the smarter purchase when substantially cheaper than the XM6. The Sony U.S. store showed $249.99 during the research snapshot, compared with a $329.99 reference price.

As a practical rule, the XM5 should be meaningfully cheaper—not merely $10 or $20 below the newer model.
3. Sony LinkBuds Fit — best for exercise and a secure fit
The LinkBuds Fit uses removable fitting supporters to improve stability during workouts, walking, and active daily use. It is the better Sony choice when conventional bulky earbuds tend to loosen or when staying put matters more than maximum isolation.
Its sport-oriented fit does not make comfort universal: ear anatomy differs, and the more open physical approach prioritizes awareness and stability over the sealed isolation of the XM series. Sony’s LinkBuds announcement describes the fitting-supporter design.
Choose it over the XM6 for exercise stability. Choose the XM6 instead for airplane travel, deep isolation, and the fullest premium feature set.

4. Sony LinkBuds Open — best for hearing your surroundings
The LinkBuds Open is designed for people who want music without blocking their ears. It suits office awareness, casual walking, and conversations with coworkers better than a sealed ANC earbud. Sony’s help guide documents multipoint and Sound Connect settings for the model.
Open earbuds cannot match sealed earbuds for airplane noise, subway travel, bass impact, or privacy. They are a different solution, not a cheaper substitute for the WF-1000XM6. Expect more environmental sound and potentially more leakage, especially at higher volume.

5. Sony LinkBuds Clip — best newer open-ear clip design
Announced in January 2026, the LinkBuds Clip uses an open clip-style format for listeners who dislike sealed ear canals or struggle to keep conventional earbuds seated. It is appealing for awareness-focused listening and may suit some ears better than traditional in-ear products.

6. Sony WF-C710N — best affordable Sony ANC earbuds
The WF-C710N is the most straightforward recommendation for shoppers who want Sony noise cancellation without paying flagship prices. It is aimed at commuting and everyday listening rather than audiophile feature collecting.
It should be considered before older WF-C700N stock because it is the newer budget direction in Sony’s range. Confirm the current U.S. price and the exact codec, battery, and water-resistance specifications on the individual product listing; do not assume the XM6’s specifications apply to it.

7. Sony WF-C510 — best cheap current Sony earbuds
The WF-C510 is the sensible choice when the goal is compact, uncomplicated true wireless listening. It works well for podcasts, calls, commuting, and ordinary music when advanced ANC, LDAC, wireless charging, and premium microphones are not priorities.
Do not buy it expecting flagship-level isolation or resolution. Its value comes from simplicity and price. The model dates from September 2024 according to TechRadar’s coverage, but current stock and pricing should be checked before ordering.
8. Sony WF-C700N — best older value ANC model
The WF-C700N can still make sense as a discounted ANC earbud, particularly if it costs clearly less than the WF-C710N. It was a balanced performance-and-price recommendation, but its age increases the importance of battery condition, firmware support, warranty, and returns.
It should not outrank the WF-C710N at similar prices. Buy it only when the discount compensates for the older hardware and the seller provides a dependable return window.
9. Sony LinkBuds S — best lightweight older ANC option
The LinkBuds S remains attractive for buyers who want a small, lightweight sealed earbud with ANC and multipoint. It can be a particularly good physical alternative for people who find the XM series too large.
However, remaining inventory may be old, discontinued, open-box, or stored for years. Lithium-ion cells age even when unused. Buy only from a seller with clear condition, warranty, and returns, and reject a unit if one earbud drains dramatically faster than the other.
10. Sony WF-1000XM4 — best legacy flagship at clearance pricing
The WF-1000XM4 still offers a recognizable premium Sony experience when sold at a genuinely low clearance price. It should never be priced close to the XM5 or XM6.
Battery degradation is the central risk. The model dates from June 2021, so old warehouse stock, refurbished units, and used pairs may have substantially less real-world battery life than the original specification. Test both earbuds separately and confirm the seller’s return policy before keeping the purchase.

The original LinkBuds use Sony’s distinctive open ring-driver design. They are suited to awareness and casual listening, not maximum bass, privacy, or noisy travel.
Consider them only when substantially cheaper than LinkBuds Open or LinkBuds Clip. Sony’s product page explains the open-ear concept and its water-exposure limitations.
12. Sony WF-C500 — best basic older Sony earbuds
The WF-C500 is a simple older true-wireless model that can be acceptable for a heavily discounted purchase. It should compete with the current WF-C510 on price alone, not on features.
Check battery balance, seller support, firmware access, and warranty. If its price is close to a new current model, choose the newer model instead.
13. Sony WI-C100 — best low-cost neckband-style Sony earbuds
The WI-C100 is not fully true wireless: a cable connects the two earbuds. That makes it useful for buyers who dislike losing individual earbuds or prefer a lightweight neckband design.
Choose it only if the connecting cable is an advantage. It lacks the cable-free convenience and charging-case experience of the WF range.
14. Sony WI-XB400 — best older bass-oriented neckband bargain
The WI-XB400 is another legacy neckband option, with a stronger bass-oriented identity than Sony’s simplest models. It may suit listeners who explicitly want a cable between the earbuds and a low clearance price.

It is a poor choice for buyers seeking ANC, wireless charging, multipoint, or a modern fully wireless design. Treat it as a legacy bargain rather than a current recommendation.
15. Sony MDR-EX155AP or similar wired Sony in-ear model — best no-battery option
A wired Sony in-ear model is worth considering if you want to avoid charging, Bluetooth pairing, codec limitations, and battery aging altogether. Wired earbuds can also be a practical backup for travel or older devices with a headphone adapter.
This entry is outside the true-wireless category, so check the product definition before buying. It is the right direction only for readers who value reliability and no battery over wireless convenience and app features.
Which Sony earbuds should you buy?
WF-1000XM6 vs WF-1000XM5
Buy the XM6 if you want the newest flagship, the latest platform, and the strongest overall Sony feature set. Buy the XM5 when its discount is substantial enough to make the older generation worthwhile. A small price gap favors the XM6; a large gap can make the XM5 the better value.
WF-1000XM6 vs LinkBuds Fit
The XM6 wins for sealed isolation, travel, sound refinement, and premium features. The LinkBuds Fit wins when staying secure during exercise is the priority. Neither is universally more comfortable.

LinkBuds Open vs LinkBuds Clip
Both target awareness rather than isolation. LinkBuds Open uses an open ring-style approach, while LinkBuds Clip uses a newer clip format. Choose based on which physical design sits securely on your ears, and check compatibility with glasses, helmets, hair, and masks.
WF-C710N vs WF-C510
Choose the WF-C710N if you want ANC for commuting. Choose the WF-C510 if low cost and simplicity matter more than noise cancellation and premium features.
Sound quality: what Sony’s codecs do—and do not—guarantee
The XM6 is the strongest Sony choice for detail, tonal adjustment, and high-end listening, but codec support is only part of the result. LDAC is most relevant to compatible Android phones and compatible playback chains. iPhone users should not buy these earbuds expecting LDAC playback benefits; iPhones generally use AAC instead.
Sound also depends on the ear-tip seal, source quality, EQ settings, hearing, and musical taste. More bass is not the same as better bass, and a higher-resolution codec cannot repair a poor fit. Ordinary streaming listeners may hear a smaller difference than the specification sheet suggests.
ANC, awareness, and fit
ANC works best when the ear tip seals the canal. Low-frequency engine and HVAC noise are generally easier to reduce than sudden voices or high-frequency sounds. If ANC seems weak, try another tip size, insert the earbud with a gentle twist, run Sony’s fit or sound-optimization process where available, and clean the microphones and sound outlet.
If the shape causes pain or instability, return the earbuds. No app setting can fix an earbud that is physically wrong for your ears. Open models should not be judged by sealed-ANC standards: they deliberately trade isolation and bass impact for awareness.
Compatibility, multipoint, and the Sony app
Sony’s Sound Connect app is the successor to the former Headphones Connect app. App features can vary by model, operating system, firmware, region, and account settings. Update the earbuds before evaluating their controls or multipoint behavior.
Multipoint normally means two simultaneous Bluetooth connections—not unlimited device switching. It is useful for connecting a phone and computer, but switching behavior can depend on the devices and the active audio source.
Exercise and water resistance
IPX4 means protection against splashing and sweat-related exposure; it does not mean waterproofing or swimming protection. Do not swim with these earbuds. The WF-1000XM6’s specification page describes its IPX4 rating and limitations. For open-ear designs, follow the model-specific manual rather than assuming the same protection applies.
How to buy older or refurbished Sony earbuds safely
- Prefer an authorized seller and a clearly stated U.S. warranty.
- Confirm whether the unit is new, refurbished, open-box, or used.
- Look for a meaningful return period.
- Test each earbud independently for battery drain, charging, pairing, and microphone operation.
- Be cautious with “new other,” vague marketplace listings, and products with no seller identity.
- Do not pay near-current-flagship prices for the XM4 or LinkBuds S.
A sealed box is not proof of a healthy battery. Storage age can materially reduce the remaining capacity of older lithium-ion cells.
Bottom line
Buy the WF-1000XM6 for the best all-around Sony experience. Choose the WF-1000XM5 when it is substantially cheaper, the LinkBuds Fit for exercise stability, the LinkBuds Open or LinkBuds Clip for awareness, the WF-C710N for affordable ANC, and the WF-C510 for simple low-cost true wireless listening. Older models are valid only when their price, battery condition, warranty, and return policy compensate for their age.
