Best overall: Sony WH-1000XM6. It is the safest choice for most travelers, commuters and office users because it combines excellent noise cancellation, enjoyable sound, multipoint Bluetooth, capable calls and about 30–31 hours of ANC-on battery life. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) are better for some comfort-first buyers; Bowers & Wilkins, Sennheiser and Focal models favor sound quality; and wired open-back headphones remain the better tool for private home listening.
Prices and stock change frequently in the United States. Where a current figure is not established below, treat the price as verify at publication rather than a permanent MSRP or sale.

How to choose the right type
Wireless versus wired
Wireless headphones add portability, active noise cancellation (ANC), microphones, multipoint connections and app-based equalization. Wired headphones never need charging, usually deliver more sound quality per dollar, have lower latency and connect directly to hi-fi equipment. Wireless does not automatically sound worse: a well-tuned model can be more satisfying in real use. Check whether it supports passive cable playback and whether the tuning changes when powered off; RTINGS reports that the XM6 works passively but loses some bass and treble.
#1 Best Overall
- All-Day Comfort & Premium Design: Crafted with high-quality materials, these over-ear wireless headphones combine luxury with long-wearing comfort. The adjustable headband ensures a secure fit for all head sizes, while ultra-soft memory foam ear cups minimize pressure. Lightweight and ergonomic, they're ideal for work, travel, or leisure—keeping you comfortable even during extended use
- Unbeatable 120-Hour Battery Life: Enjoy up to 120 hours of playtime in standard mode at moderate volume. A quick 5-minute charge provides 4 extra hours—perfect for emergencies. Whether binge-watching, commuting, or working, these headphones/earbuds deliver uninterrupted performance without frequent recharging

Experience crisp audio streaming, low latency, and reliable connectivity for calls, music, or movies. The auto-connect feature allows hassle-free use anytime, anywhere
- Advanced Active Noise Cancellation: Immerse yourself in pure sound with next-generation ANC, eliminating up to 95% of ambient noise. Dual-microphone hybrid ANC detects and neutralizes external sounds across a wide frequency range 20Hz-20kHz, creating a distraction-free environment whether you're traveling or working
- Powerful Bass & Crystal-Clear Calls: Precision-tuned drivers deliver deep, punchy bass for an immersive listening experience. The built-in high-sensitivity microphone, enhanced by wind resistance and AI clarity, ensures professional-grade call quality—perfect for music lovers and busy professionals alike
Closed-back versus open-back
Closed-back cups isolate better and limit leakage, making them suitable for planes, offices and shared rooms. Open-back designs let air and sound pass through, often creating a more spacious presentation, but they leak music and provide little isolation. The HD 800 S and SHP9500 below are home-listening choices, not ANC replacements for a commute.
What ANC can and cannot do
ANC is most effective against steady low-frequency noise such as aircraft engines, train rumble, HVAC and buses. Voices, clattering dishes, keyboard taps and high-pitched sounds are harder. Seal and fit matter as much as the electronics. Bose is commonly perceived as more aggressive or “vacuum-like,” while Sony’s cancellation is often described as more natural. If pressure sensations bother you, try both before committing.
Fit, comfort and service
- Confirm that pads fully surround your ears and are deep enough for them.
- Check clamp force, headband pressure, heat buildup and weight distribution during long sessions.
- Glasses can break the seal and reduce bass and isolation.
- Look for replacement pads and a practical return window; comfort is highly individual.
Battery, codecs and USB-C
Compare runtime with ANC on or off, and remember that volume, codec, multipoint and spatial audio can change results. Fast charging is useful, but USB-C charging does not prove USB-C digital audio; verify that feature separately. Bluetooth codec support also depends on the phone or computer. “Hi-Res” branding alone does not guarantee an audible improvement.
Calls and multipoint
For meetings, investigate voice clarity, wind handling, sidetone and connection stability. The XM6 supports simultaneous connections with up to two devices and receives strong non-boom microphone results from RTINGS. During calls, some headphones reduce Bluetooth audio quality or disable certain codecs.
Apple, Android and Windows considerations
AirPods Max 2 is most compelling with an iPhone, iPad and Mac, where switching and spatial features are integrated. Apple’s functionality is more limited on Android. Sony, Bose, Sennheiser and other platform-neutral models are safer for mixed devices; Android buyers should check whether their phone supports the advertised LDAC or aptX variant.
The 15 best over-ear headphones for 2026
1. Sony WH-1000XM6 — best overall
The XM6 is the most balanced recommendation for travel, work and everyday listening. Independent guides place it at or near the top for ANC, with particularly strong engine-rumble reduction and useful office isolation. Its warm, bass-elevated tuning can be adjusted in Sony’s app, and it offers multipoint, a microphone suitable for calls and roughly 30 hours of ANC-on battery life; RTINGS measured more than 31 hours, while WIRED cites about 30 hours.
Choose it if: you want one closed-back wireless headphone for nearly everything. Skip it if: you need very deep pads, the softest possible fit or a strongly audiophile, natural presentation. It can play through a cable with the battery off, but the sound changes. Official details: Sony. U.S. price: verify at publication; WIRED reported a temporary $398 price against a listed $460 in February 2026.

2. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — best comfort and intense ANC
Bose is the alternative for listeners who value generous padding and a pronounced cancellation effect. The second-generation QC Ultra is a closed-back wireless ANC model suited to aircraft and noisy commutes. Its comfort advantage is especially relevant for people who find Sony’s shallower pads restrictive.
Choose it if: comfort and maximum-feeling ANC come first. Skip it if: you prefer Sony’s more natural cancellation character or need the broadest sound customization. Confirm current U.S. specifications and price on the official Bose page.

3. Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 — premium sound and design

4. Apple AirPods Max 2 — best for Apple-device owners
AirPods Max 2 makes the most sense inside an iPhone, iPad and Mac household, where Apple’s switching and spatial-audio features are useful. It remains a closed-back ANC headphone rather than a universal winner: RTINGS notes more limited functionality outside iOS.
Choose it if: Apple integration is worth prioritizing. Skip it if: Android or Windows is your main platform, or you want the best value and longest battery. See Apple’s current specifications at Apple.
5. Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless — sound-focused premium alternative
Momentum 5 Wireless is positioned as a less expensive rival to Sony’s flagship, with a stronger emphasis on musical enjoyment than maximum cancellation. Its recommendation depends on U.S. stock and street price, which can change.

Bathys prioritizes refined, detailed playback and can appeal to listeners who find mainstream ANC headphones too generic. It is still wireless and closed-back, but its value is in sound quality rather than the lightest weight, longest runtime or most forceful cancellation.

7. Sennheiser Momentum 4 Wireless — best battery and value
Momentum 4 remains compelling when discounted. SoundGuys highlights its comfort, equalizer and USB-C charging, and lists a $350 MSRP; current sale pricing must be checked separately. Its long battery life and relaxed fit make it a practical everyday option, although its ANC is not the main reason to buy it.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Do not buy open-back headphones for flights, offices or shared rooms.
- Do not equate the highest advertised ANC number with the best experience; fit and pressure tolerance matter.
- Compare battery figures only when ANC status, volume, codec and test method are known.
- Do not assume every phone or laptop supports every Bluetooth codec.
- USB-C charging is not the same as USB-C digital audio.
- Check earcup depth and glasses compatibility before discarding the return window.
- Do not choose AirPods Max 2 for an Android-heavy setup without checking feature limits.
- A discounted XM5 or Momentum 4 can be a better buy than a newer model.
- Codec and “Hi-Res” labels cannot replace a good seal and tuning you enjoy.
The Bottom Line
Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 for the safest all-purpose combination of ANC, sound, calls and battery. Choose the Bose QC Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) when comfort and an intense cancellation effect matter more. Choose the Px7 S3, Momentum 5, Focal Bathys or an open-back wired model when music quality matters more than maximum travel convenience.
