The best gym headphones are not necessarily the headphones with the strongest noise cancellation. For most active gym users, the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 are the best overall choice because their ear hooks, physical controls, ANC, Transparency mode, heart-rate monitoring, and IPX4 rating are designed around exercise. The Sony WH-1000XM6 is the better pick for maximum ANC, while the Shokz OpenFit Pro is the better choice when awareness matters more than isolation.

This guide covers sealed earbuds, over-ear ANC headphones, and open-ear sports headphones. They do not provide equivalent noise control: open-ear models preserve environmental sound, while sealed earbuds and over-ear headphones can physically isolate the ear.

ANC is useful for treadmill motors and continuous gym music, but the ear-hook fit is the bigger advantage during movement. The main drawbacks are that IPX4 is splash resistance rather than waterproofing, and the hooks may press against glasses or simply feel uncomfortable for some ears. Buy them if you run, jump, or train intensely; skip them if you dislike ear hooks or want maximum passive isolation.

See the Powerbeats Pro 2 at Apple.

2. Sony WH-1000XM6 — best noise cancellation

The WH-1000XM6 is the strongest choice when silencing the gym is the priority. Current independent testing places it at or near the top of ANC rankings, particularly for steady low-frequency noise from HVAC systems, treadmills, fans, and bass-heavy music.

It is still an over-ear headphone, not a sports model. Earcups can become hot, the headband can shift during burpees or floor work, and no verified workout water-resistance rating was established here. It is best for lifting, warm-ups, light cardio, stretching, and commuting to the gym—not heavy sweating or high-impact sessions.

3. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — best for comfort

The Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) suit people who find in-ear tips uncomfortable and want one premium pair for the gym, travel, and office. Bose lists ANC, Aware mode, ActiveSense, CustomTune, spatialized audio, multipoint, and a $449 U.S. list price. Bose claims up to 30 hours of battery life, but immersive audio and other features can reduce that figure.

The plush around-ear fit is comfortable for moderate activity, but heat, sweat, bulk, and movement remain concerns. Bose does not make this a sweat-focused recommendation. Choose it for comfort and powerful noise control; avoid it for intense HIIT or workouts where your head repeatedly contacts a bench or mat.

See the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen).

4. Apple AirPods Pro 3 — best compact option for iPhone users

AirPods Pro are the natural compact option for iPhone owners who value automatic pairing, device switching, Find My, Transparency mode, and Apple ecosystem integration. The sealed in-ear design can provide better passive isolation than open-ear headphones, while ANC handles continuous gym noise.

Exact 2026-generation specifications, pricing, battery figures, and water-resistance details should be checked on Apple’s current product page before purchase. The conventional earbud fit is less secure than an ear hook for some runners and HIIT users, and all health or spatial-audio features depend on compatible devices, permissions, and software.

5. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) — best premium ANC earbuds for comfort

These are a better fit than Bose’s over-ear model for readers who want strong ANC in a compact format. Replaceable ear tips and stabilizing pieces can provide a more personalized fit than many basic earbuds, and the sealed design helps with both ANC and passive isolation.

Verify the current U.S. price, exact generation, app requirements, and water-resistance rating before buying. They are a premium comfort-and-isolation choice, not an automatic choice for heavy sweat or high-impact training.

6. Jabra Elite 8 Active Gen 2 — best rugged sealed-earbud alternative

The Elite 8 Active Gen 2 belongs on a gym shortlist because it is positioned as a rugged, workout-focused sealed earbud. Its compact design is less bulky than an over-ear headphone, and its fit is more exercise-oriented than many lifestyle earbuds.

Jabra availability and support status can vary, so verify that the exact Gen 2 model is still sold in your region and confirm its current IP rating and ANC behavior. This is a good candidate for users who want sealed earbuds without an ear hook, provided the tips stay secure in their ears.

7. Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport — best for sound and training features

The MOMENTUM Sport targets listeners who want workout-oriented features without giving up sound quality. It is a sensible alternative for people who train regularly and want fitness-related functionality alongside ANC and a sealed earbud fit.

Check current availability, app compatibility, supported fitness services, and water-resistance details. Heart-rate or other sensor features should not be treated as medical measurements, and support can depend on the phone, app, permissions, and firmware.

8. JBL Endurance Peak 3 — best budget ear-hook design

The Endurance Peak 3 is worth considering when fit security matters more than premium ANC. Its ear-hook design is aimed at keeping the earbuds in place during movement and is generally a better starting point for running or HIIT than a loose conventional bud.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume that “Endurance” means ANC. Retail pages can mix the Endurance Peak II and Peak 3, so verify the exact model, official water rating, battery claim, and whether ANC is actually listed before calling it noise-canceling.

9. Shokz OpenFit Pro — best for awareness

The OpenFit Pro is for gym users who need to hear trainers, training partners, staff, alarms, or nearby traffic. Its open-ear design uses titanium ear hooks, physical buttons, multipoint, wireless charging, and open-ear noise reduction rather than sealed-ear ANC. Shokz lists IP55 protection, up to 12 hours per charge and up to 50 hours with noise reduction disabled; with noise reduction enabled, the figures are up to 6 hours per charge and 24 hours total. The official price shown is $249.95.

It cannot make a loud gym quiet like sealed ANC earbuds. Sound leakage and weaker bass in noisy spaces are the trade-offs for awareness. Choose it for outdoor exercise, coaching, and situational awareness—not maximum isolation.

See the Shokz OpenFit Pro.

10. soundcore AeroFit Pro — best open-ear value

The AeroFit Pro is a lower-priced awareness-first alternative. Its flexible ear hooks, detachable neckband, physical buttons, multipoint, app support, and IPX5 rating make it practical for workouts where environmental awareness matters. soundcore lists a $179.99 price, 14 hours per charge, and 46 hours total playback.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It does not seal the ear and therefore does not provide the same isolation as ANC earbuds. LDAC support is listed as Android-compatible, so iPhone buyers should not pay for that feature. It is a good value for outdoor workouts and moderate gym noise, but not for people whose primary goal is to block nearby music or clanging weights.

11. JLab JBuds Lux ANC — best low-cost over-ear candidate

The JBuds Lux ANC is a value-oriented over-ear option for readers who want ANC without paying premium Sony or Bose prices. Its larger earcups can be more comfortable than in-ear tips during lifting and stretching, and over-ear isolation can work well against steady background noise.

Heat and stability limit its use for running, jumping, and very sweaty workouts. Verify the current official price, sweat guidance, and water-resistance status before treating it as a gym-specific purchase.

12. Sony WH-CH720N — best lightweight budget over-ear option

The WH-CH720N is a lighter, less expensive way to get Sony’s ANC approach. It works best for stationary lifting, warm-ups, commuting, and light cardio where comfort and low weight matter more than a sport-specific fit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not automatically sweat-resistant. Verify the current water-resistance information, and skip it for swimming, heavy sweat, or high-impact floor exercises unless Sony explicitly supports that use.

13. Beats Studio Pro — best stylish over-ear alternative

Beats Studio Pro is appealing to Apple users who want ANC, Transparency mode, and ecosystem-friendly features in a familiar over-ear design. It can serve as one pair for commuting, work, and light gym sessions.

It is less secure than the Powerbeats Pro 2 and should not be treated as sweatproof without an official rating. Choose it for lifestyle versatility; choose sport earbuds for running, HIIT, and heavy sweating.

14. Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless — best battery and sound for light workouts

The MOMENTUM 4 Wireless is aimed at listeners who value sound quality and very long claimed battery life. Its ANC and spacious over-ear presentation can make lifting and post-workout commuting enjoyable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its bulky over-ear design is the limitation. Earcups can become hot, shift during floor work, and suffer moisture exposure. It is a gym-plus-travel option, not a dedicated sweat-training headphone.

15. Nothing Headphone (a) — best budget stable over-ear alternative

The Nothing Headphone (a) is a newer midrange option included for buyers seeking a stable, affordable over-ear design with ANC. Its listed IP52 rating provides some protection, but that is not a license to expose it to prolonged sweat or wet charging.

Verify ANC performance, current U.S. availability, pricing, and the exact product page before purchase. It is better suited to lifting, walking, and light cardio than repeated high-impact movement.

ANC, passive isolation, open-ear reduction, and Transparency explained

Active noise cancellation (ANC) uses microphones and signal processing to reduce incoming sound. It is most effective against steady, repetitive low-frequency noise such as fans, treadmills, HVAC systems, and continuous music.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Passive isolation comes from the physical seal. A well-fitting ear tip or over-ear cushion may do more against voices, clanging weights, and irregular high-frequency sounds than ANC alone. A powerful ANC system cannot compensate for an earbud that keeps loosening.

Open-ear noise reduction improves the audibility of your music without sealing the ear canal. It preserves awareness but cannot silence a gym in the same way as sealed earbuds or over-ear headphones.

Transparency or Aware mode deliberately lets outside sound in. Use it when speaking with a trainer, crossing a road, listening for alarms, or exercising in a busy environment.

Over-ear versus earbuds for the gym

Choose earbuds when… Choose over-ear headphones when…
You run, jump, cycle, or do HIIT. You lift, stretch, walk, or do light cardio.
You sweat heavily or need a stated IP rating. You dislike ear-canal pressure.
You need small storage and physical movement stability. You want a spacious presentation and long single-charge use.
You want a transparency shortcut. You also need headphones for travel or office work.

Over-ear headphones often offer stronger ANC and longer battery life, but they can trap heat, shift during floor exercises, interfere with glasses or hats, and lack a verified water-resistance rating. Do not describe an unrated over-ear model as sweatproof.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What IP ratings mean

  • IPX4: protection against splashing water under specified test conditions; commonly suitable for sweat and light rain when the manufacturer permits it.
  • IPX5: water-jet resistance, with no dust rating represented by the “X.”
  • IP55: dust protection plus resistance to water jets under specified conditions.
  • IP52: limited dust protection and protection against lightly angled dripping water, not heavy sweat or immersion.
  • IP68: higher dust and water protection, but the manufacturer’s exact conditions still apply.

An IP rating does not prevent salt corrosion, guarantee protection from prolonged sweat, or permit charging while wet. Wipe the earbuds and charging contacts, let them air-dry fully, and only then return them to the case.

Fit and controls matter more than a headline ANC number

  • Ear hooks: usually the most secure for running and HIIT, but they can feel bulky or press against glasses.
  • Ear wings: less visible than hooks, although stability depends heavily on ear shape.
  • Conventional tips: portable and discreet, but more likely to loosen with sweat or jaw movement.
  • Over-ear clamps: stable during moderate activity, not guaranteed to stay put during jumping or floor work.
  • Open-ear hooks: comfortable and awareness-friendly, but unable to create sealed-ear isolation.

Physical buttons are generally preferable during exercise: they provide tactile feedback, control volume and playback reliably, and are less likely to misfire when wiping sweat or adjusting an earcup. Touch controls are convenient but can react accidentally to hair, fingers, or moisture.

How to choose by workout

  • Running or HIIT: start with the Powerbeats Pro 2. Ear hooks and physical controls are more important than choosing the strongest ANC.
  • Strength training: sealed earbuds provide the best balance of isolation and stability. Over-ear models work if you stay mostly upright and do not sweat heavily.
  • Heavy sweating: prioritize an official IP rating, a secure fit, easy-to-clean tips, and a case with dry charging contacts. Do not infer protection from “athlete” marketing.
  • Training with a coach: choose Transparency mode or an open-ear model such as the Shokz OpenFit Pro.
  • Maximum isolation: choose Sony WH-1000XM6 for over-ear ANC or a well-sealed ANC earbud, but keep awareness mode available.
  • One pair for travel and the gym: Sony WH-1000XM6 or Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) work for light gym sessions; choose sport earbuds if workouts are intense.
  • iPhone: consider Apple and Beats features such as automatic pairing, Find My, switching, and health integration, but confirm which features work with your exact devices.
  • Android: look for Fast Pair, multipoint, app support, compatible codecs, and fitness-app compatibility. Do not pay for Apple-only features.
  • Awareness first: choose Shokz OpenFit Pro or soundcore AeroFit Pro, accepting that environmental noise remains audible.

Battery claims: what “up to” really means

Earbud makers usually quote both playback per charge and total playback including the case. These are different figures. ANC, immersive or spatial audio, high volume, calls, temperature, codecs, and weak Bluetooth conditions can all reduce runtime. Open-ear products may quote different battery results with noise reduction enabled and disabled.

Quick-charge claims should be read with their charging interval: “10 minutes for one hour” is not the same as a full battery. Also remember that a charging case adds bulk and can be misplaced at the gym.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sweat, hygiene, and failure prevention

  1. Wipe earbuds, hooks, cushions, and microphones after every sweaty session.
  2. Dry the charging contacts and wait until the product is fully dry before putting it in the case.
  3. Clean ear tips and hooks regularly; do not share unclean earbuds.
  4. Do not use a product through pain, irritation, or an ear infection.
  5. Keep ANC or Transparency mode accessible so you can hear staff, alarms, and equipment.
  6. Use a retailer with a clear return policy because ear shape determines whether tips, wings, and hooks actually work.

Firmware updates can change battery behavior, controls, multipoint, or adaptive features. Heart-rate monitoring and other sensors may require permissions, compatible apps, and supported phones; their presence does not establish medical-grade accuracy.

Final decision guide

Buy the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 if you want the most complete package for active gym use. Buy the Sony WH-1000XM6 if maximum ANC is your priority and you mostly lift or do light cardio. Choose the Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) for plush over-ear comfort and premium travel crossover. Choose the Shokz OpenFit Pro or soundcore AeroFit Pro when hearing the world is more important than silencing it.
