The best monitor with built-in speakers for most small desks is a 27-inch QHD model. It gives you noticeably more workspace than a 24-inch 1080p display without the footprint of a 32-inch screen. Choose 24 inches for the narrowest desk, 27-inch 4K for sharper text, and USB-C if you want one cable for your laptop’s display, audio, data, and charging.
Built-in monitor speakers are mainly a convenience feature. They are usually fine for meetings, alerts, podcasts, tutorials, and casual gaming, but rarely match dedicated speakers or headphones for music and films. The picks below are filtered for actual integrated speakers—not merely a headphone jack—and labeled with the limitations that matter on a small desk.

What counts as a monitor with speakers?
A monitor qualifies only when its specification says it has integrated speakers. A headphone output is not enough: it simply passes audio to headphones or external speakers. Likewise, “audio-ready” can describe a headphone jack rather than speaker hardware.

HDMI, DisplayPort, and compatible USB-C connections can carry digital audio. The computer must select the monitor as its sound output, and the monitor itself must not be muted. Some older displays also require a separate 3.5mm cable from the computer to an audio input. BenQ documents both digital and analog connection paths in its audio troubleshooting guide.
How much desk space do monitor sizes use?
Panel size is only part of the calculation. Approximate geometric panel widths are about 21 inches for a 24-inch 16:9 screen, 23.5 inches for 27 inches, 28 inches for 32 inches, and 31 inches for a 34-inch 21:9 ultrawide. The stand can add substantial front-to-back depth and may occupy more usable desk area than the panel.
Before buying, measure the monitor’s total width, stand depth, maximum height, and cable clearance. Check whether the base blocks a drawer, laptop dock, or keyboard shelf. VESA compatibility is especially valuable on a shallow desk: an arm can move the base to the desk edge or free the surface entirely. A height-adjustable stand may also leave room beneath the screen for a laptop or keyboard.
24-inch 1080p or 27-inch QHD?
Choose 24-inch 1080p when width is the priority. Text is generally crisper than on 27-inch 1080p, and 100% operating-system scaling is usually comfortable.
Choose 27-inch QHD for the best general productivity balance. It provides more room for documents and side-by-side windows while retaining sharper text than 27-inch FHD. Depending on viewing distance and eyesight, 100% or 125% scaling can work well.
Choose 27-inch 4K when sharp text and high pixel density matter most. It often benefits from 125–150% scaling, so 4K does not automatically produce four times as much readable workspace. Gaming at native 4K also demands more from the computer.
Treat 27-inch 1080p as a budget compromise. The physical workspace is larger, but the lower pixel density can make text look soft at close range. This 27-inch 4K model is the sharp-text choice for a compact workstation, particularly when a laptop is the primary computer. Dell’s U.S. integrated-speaker catalog showed $329.99 sale pricing against a $349.99 list price when checked.

Confirm the exact speaker hardware, USB-C video and power-delivery capabilities, hub functions, stand dimensions, and current stock on the product page. It is a poor fit if you mainly stream video or game at modest resolutions and do not need 4K.
3. Dell S2725DC — best QHD laptop monitor
The S2725DC targets users who want a 27-inch QHD screen with USB-C simplicity rather than 4K density. Dell listed it at $244.99 versus a $259.99 list price when checked. Confirm USB-C wattage, data functions, and speaker details because “USB-C monitor” does not by itself mean a full dock.
It makes more sense than the 4K model when you want comfortable QHD scaling and lower graphics demands. Check the stand depth if your desk is shallow.
4. Dell S2725HSM — best mainstream 27-inch value
This 27-inch 1080p monitor combines integrated speakers, a 144Hz refresh rate, and a height-, swivel-, pivot-, and tilt-adjustable stand. Dell listed it at $174.99.

This 24-inch-class display is the safer Dell option for a narrow desk. Its smaller 1080p format generally provides better pixel density than a 27-inch FHD monitor, while integrated audio handles calls and system sounds without another device.

A curved panel usually requires slightly more front-to-back clearance than a flat model, and its shape may be less convenient for precise design work. Measure the stand and rear clearance.

This 34-inch ultrawide is not small in absolute terms, but it can save desk hardware by replacing two monitors, two stands, and some cables. Dell listed it at $419.99.
Its approximately 31-inch panel width makes it unsuitable for a genuinely narrow desk. Buy it only when a single wide workspace is more useful than a compact 24- or 27-inch display, and confirm how your applications, games, and screen-sharing tools handle the ultrawide aspect ratio.
12. BenQ GW2486TC — best compact USB-C office candidate
BenQ’s support material identifies the GW2486TC as a 23.8-inch, 100Hz USB-C business monitor and includes it among models with built-in-speaker troubleshooting. It is aimed at reducing laptop-desk clutter while retaining a small footprint.
Confirm U.S. stock, USB-C power-delivery wattage, hub features, stand adjustment, and the exact speaker rating. Do not assume USB-C provides charging simply because the connector is present.
13. BenQ GW2786TC — best 27-inch USB-C office candidate
The GW2786TC is the larger USB-C office alternative in BenQ’s speaker-equipped lineup. Its role is straightforward: more workspace than a 24-inch model, integrated audio for calls, and potentially simpler laptop connectivity.

How good are monitor speakers?
Most are best classified as notification and call speakers. They can be perfectly convenient for a lecture, meeting, podcast, or occasional game, but thin enclosures typically provide little bass and limited maximum volume. Speakers may also point downward or backward, making them sound less direct.

USB-C: the specification that needs decoding
USB-C is a connector, not a guarantee of docking. A suitable monitor may provide:
- Video: DisplayPort Alt Mode from the laptop.
- Charging: USB Power Delivery, expressed in watts.
- Data: USB ports for peripherals.
- Networking: Ethernet through a built-in hub or dock.
- Audio: digital sound alongside the video connection.
A 65W monitor may charge many ultraportables but can be insufficient for a high-performance laptop under load. A USB-C port may instead support charging only, data only, or video without charging. Check the manual and specification for the exact upstream port and wattage.
Gaming and work trade-offs
For work, prioritize resolution, text clarity, a height-adjustable stand, USB-C charging, a USB hub, matte coating, comfortable brightness, and reliable wake-from-sleep behavior. Low-blue-light and flicker-reduction modes may be useful preferences, but they are not proof that a monitor prevents eye strain.

A 280Hz display can still be a poor office choice, as the Lenovo example shows. OLED can deliver excellent contrast, but static desktop elements introduce burn-in considerations; a non-OLED display is often the more predictable choice for an all-day workstation. Fixing common audio and display problems
No sound
- Connect through HDMI, DisplayPort, or compatible USB-C.
- Open the computer’s sound-output menu and select the monitor.
- Open the monitor’s on-screen menu and enable speakers; raise the volume and remove mute.
- Try another cable and confirm that the source device actually sends audio.
- If the display requires analog audio, connect the computer’s 3.5mm output to the monitor’s audio input.
If the speakers are too quiet, that is often a hardware limitation of thin monitor enclosures rather than a fault. Use headphones or compact external speakers when volume matters.
USB-C does not charge
Confirm that the port supports Power Delivery, check its wattage against the laptop’s requirements, use a cable rated for the required video and data standard, and ensure you are using the monitor’s upstream USB-C port rather than a downstream port.
The advertised refresh rate is missing
Check the HDMI port’s bandwidth, cable, laptop GPU, console limit, dock, and operating-system display settings. A dock or older cable may cap the connection at 60Hz even when the monitor supports more.

Check its native resolution. If it is 1080p, the softness is the expected pixel-density trade-off. Move to 24-inch 1080p or 27-inch QHD rather than trying to solve the problem with software scaling.
