For a sound-first upgrade, consider the Audeze Maxwell 2; for competitive play, the Razer BlackShark V3 Pro is a strong alternative. If you want to spend less, look at the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 5P or Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3.

How to choose a PS5 headset
3D audio does not require a special headset badge
PS5’s Tempest 3D AudioTech is processed by the console. A compatible stereo headset can receive that spatial audio; a product does not need a “3D” label to qualify. The game’s audio mix, your headset fit, settings, and hearing all affect what you perceive. Sony’s PULSE line is designed for PlayStation, but it is not the only route to spatial audio. For PS5 game audio, Bluetooth alone is usually not enough
Many headsets have Bluetooth for a phone but use a USB wireless adapter, PlayStation Link, or a base station for low-latency PS5 game audio. Do not assume that “Bluetooth” on the box means the headset pairs directly with PS5 for normal game sound. Sony’s PULSE Elite can play PlayStation Link and Bluetooth audio at the same time, a useful distinction for phone audio alongside a game. For other models, verify which wireless mode works on PS5. Check the console-specific version before buying
Similar product names can hide different PlayStation and Xbox SKUs. Compatibility with a console does not guarantee that every feature—such as chat mixing, EQ controls, wireless routing, or a base station—works identically on both. Multi-console systems may need specific USB or HDMI routing. If you own both PS5 and Xbox, verify the exact model and connection diagram before ordering; “works with Xbox” is not the same as full feature parity across consoles.

Choose wired or wireless based on how you play
A wired headset avoids charging and wireless interference, and a 3.5mm cable can connect through the DualSense controller. The trade-offs are cable management and possible controller-battery use. USB wireless and PlayStation Link are more convenient for many desk setups, but require a compatible adapter or base station. A wired fallback is useful, but check whether the cable supports microphone chat: Sony says PULSE Elite needs a four-conductor cable for chat, and does not include one. Match the headset to the sound you want
For cinematic games, prioritize clear detail, convincing imaging, comfort, and a stable connection. A strong bass emphasis can make explosions feel bigger but can also mask quiet cues. Competitive players often prefer controlled bass, easy-to-place sounds, a usable microphone, and low-latency wireless. Neither tuning guarantees better performance: game mix, fit, equalization, and individual hearing matter.
Do not pay extra for features you will not use
ANC can reduce low-frequency household hum, but it does not automatically make positional audio more accurate. Premium models may add simultaneous connections, docks, hot-swappable batteries, or multi-device routing. Those are valuable if they solve a real setup problem; for a single PS5 and occasional play, they may be unnecessary cost and bulk. Comfort is personal, too: head shape, glasses, clamp pressure, heat, and pad material all matter.

1. Sony PULSE Elite — best overall
PULSE Elite is the most balanced recommendation for a PS5-first buyer who wants convenient wireless and a modern feature set without stepping into the most expensive multi-device systems. Sony specifies planar magnetic drivers, PlayStation Link, Bluetooth, a retractable microphone with AI-enhanced noise rejection, and PS Portal connectivity. Sony rates battery life at up to 30 hours and says a 10-minute charge can provide up to two hours of use; these are manufacturer figures, not a promise of identical runtime in every setup. 2. Audeze Maxwell 2 for PlayStation — best sound-first pick
Maxwell 2 is the specialist choice for buyers willing to pay more for a premium audio-focused headset. Its planar-driver design is a reason to consider it, not proof that every listener will prefer its sound: planar technology does not guarantee better tuning, comfort, or value. The PlayStation store listed the Maxwell 2 at $329 and a PlayStation ANC version at $429 during the August 16, 2026 check. The premium price and potentially substantial weight make it a less obvious choice for long sessions or budget-conscious buyers. Confirm the exact PlayStation SKU and included features before purchase; do not assume the standard and ANC versions are interchangeable.

3. Razer BlackShark V3 Pro for PlayStation — best competitive alternative
This is a premium option for players who put competitive use and microphone capability high on the list. The PlayStation store listed the model at $249.99 in the August 16, 2026 check. A high price makes sense only if its particular wireless, microphone, and noise-control features suit your setup. Verify the PlayStation version’s exact microphone, ANC, battery, and connection specifications before buying; claims can differ between variants. No headset can guarantee better aim or ranking, and positional cues depend on game audio and personal fit as well as hardware.

4. SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless — best premium feature balance
Consider the Nova Pro Wireless if you want a more elaborate desk setup with multiple connection options, a base station, and customization beyond a simple USB dongle. Its feature count is most useful when you regularly switch devices or want more control over routing. It is expensive and more involved than a basic PS5 headset; if your only goal is game audio and party chat on one console, the extra system may not earn its keep. Confirm the current PlayStation SKU and which base-station functions are supported on PS5.
5. SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Omni — best for multi-device routing
The Nova Pro Omni is a distinct, newer premium option rather than another name for the Nova Pro Wireless. It is aimed at flexible multi-device connectivity, which can be worthwhile for players moving between consoles and other audio sources. That complexity and cost are hard to justify if you use only PS5. 6. Logitech G Astro A50 X LIGHTSPEED — best docked multi-console setup
The A50 X is aimed at a premium, dock-centered setup, especially where switching between consoles and PC is important. It should not be treated as interchangeable with the A50 LIGHTSPEED: the models have different connectivity and console-switching capabilities. Before buying, map your actual devices and display/audio routing to Logitech’s current instructions. The base station and desk footprint are unnecessary overhead for someone who simply wants one wireless PS5 headset.

10. Turtle Beach Stealth Pro for PlayStation — best premium ANC-oriented option
Consider the Stealth Pro if active noise cancellation and a premium feature set are priorities. Its battery flexibility is another reason to compare it with conventional single-battery headsets. It is bulky and expensive relative to simpler picks, and comfort varies. Confirm that you are buying the PlayStation SKU and check the exact ANC, battery, and software behavior for that version rather than transferring specifications from another model.

11. Turtle Beach Stealth 700 Gen 3 — feature-rich midrange candidate
The Stealth 700 Gen 3 is worth comparing if you want more connectivity features than a basic budget wireless headset. Its size and weight may be a drawback for some people, so fit is especially important. Verify the console-specific model and which connection, microphone, and chat features operate on PS5. A shared product name does not establish that every version behaves the same way.
12. Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 3 — budget wireless pick
The Stealth 600 Gen 3 is a value-minded wireless candidate with 2.4GHz and Bluetooth positioning. Turtle Beach has advertised up to 80 hours of battery life, but that is a manufacturer maximum and should not be treated as a directly comparable gaming-runtime test; mode and settings affect endurance. 13. Sony PULSE 3D — best simple official budget option
PULSE 3D remains a straightforward PlayStation-oriented choice when its current sale price is attractive. Sony lists up to 12 hours of wireless play and describes a 3.5mm connection option. Compared with PULSE Elite, it is an older, simpler design without the Elite’s PlayStation Link feature set and longer rated battery life. 15. Razer BlackShark V2 X — best simple wired budget candidate
A wired headset can be the sensible choice if you want to avoid charging and wireless-adapter troubleshooting. The BlackShark V2 X is a low-cost candidate, but confirm the exact compatible model and whether its cable provides the microphone connection you need. It lacks the convenience of wireless and the extras found on premium options, but those omissions may be acceptable for a basic controller-connected setup.

Connect and configure a wireless headset on PS5
For a USB wireless adapter headset
- Insert the headset’s compatible USB wireless adapter into a PS5 USB port, then turn on the headset.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output. Select the headset as the output device if the PS5 has not switched automatically.
- Set Output to Headphones to All Audio if you want game sound routed to the headset.
- Open Settings > Sound > Microphone and select or test the headset microphone.
- Adjust headphone 3D-audio settings and game/chat balance where supported. The available controls depend on the headset and connection mode.
Menu wording can vary with system software and language. A Bluetooth feature on the headset does not replace the compatible USB gaming connection for PS5 game audio.
For Sony PULSE Elite
- Turn on the PS5 and insert the included PlayStation Link USB adapter into a PS5 USB Type-A port.
- Press the PlayStation Link button on the headset and wait for the headset and adapter indicators to confirm connection.
- If needed, check Settings > Accessories > Headset > PS Link Device Software Update for device software.
Sony says the included adapter is paired with the headset out of the box. The headset can play audio from only one PlayStation Link adapter at a time. Fix common PS5 headset problems
Wireless dropouts or interference
- Move a USB adapter out from behind the console; try a front port or a short USB extension.
- Restart the PS5 and headset, then confirm the adapter is paired and the headset is not connected to another device in a conflicting mode.
- Update the headset, adapter, and console software, and test another USB port.
- Temporarily disconnect Bluetooth devices to see whether the issue changes.
Delayed sound
For game audio, use the headset’s intended PlayStation Link, USB wireless, or base-station connection instead of assuming Bluetooth will be low-latency. Bluetooth can remain useful for a phone, music, or secondary audio, particularly on models that combine it with a separate gaming link.
Chat balance or microphone trouble
- Check that PS5 has selected the headset microphone and output device, and confirm that the headset is in its PS5-compatible connection mode.
- Do not assume a ChatMix dial works on PS5 just because it exists on a headset; some controls depend on the platform or connection path.
- For wired use, confirm the cable supports microphone chat. A stereo-only cable may carry sound without carrying the microphone signal.
Sony specifically requires a four-conductor cable for PULSE Elite microphone chat over 3.5mm; the cable is not included. Details are in its connection support.
Does PS5 Pro need a different headset?
No special headset is required simply because the console is a PS5 Pro. Choose based on connection method, comfort, microphone, and features; the Pro designation does not make a headset more capable of 3D audio by itself. The same buying criteria apply to PS5 and PS5 Pro.
