Best overall: the Sony WH-1000XM6. It combines excellent noise cancellation, strong microphone performance, multipoint connectivity, useful EQ controls, and up to 30 hours of manufacturer-rated battery life. Apple users should consider the AirPods Max 2 for over-ear listening or AirPods Pro 3 for portable calls. Music-first listeners should look at the Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless, while the Soundcore Space Q45 is the strongest budget ANC pick.
There is no universal winner: earbuds are easier to carry and often better for quick calls, while over-ear headphones generally provide longer battery life, greater physical isolation, and better comfort for some people.

The 15 best headphones
1. Sony WH-1000XM6 — best overall
Sony’s flagship is the safest recommendation for buyers who refuse to choose between music and calls. Independent comparisons generally place it ahead of the AirPods Max in noise attenuation, microphone performance, and customization. Sony lists a QN3 processor, 12 microphones, multipoint, and up to 30 hours of battery life.
Its sound is customizable through Sony’s EQ and personalization features. ANC is particularly useful for aircraft and train rumble, although voices and wind remain harder problems for any headset. RTINGS reports that Sony’s LC3 mode can improve microphone performance where compatible devices support it, but LC3 availability is not universal.
Choose it if: you want one premium over-ear pair for travel, music, and mixed-device calls. Skip it if: you prefer Bose’s fit, need much longer battery life, or want a boom microphone.
2. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — best for comfort
The Bose is the main alternative to Sony for listeners who value a comfortable fit and immersive listening options. Fit is personal, but many users prefer Bose’s long-session comfort. Its ANC is strong, and its transparency and immersive modes make it versatile for travel and entertainment.
RTINGS reports similar recording quality between the Bose and Sony in its comparison, so do not assume a clear microphone victory. Bose’s app and ecosystem are less flexible for some mixed-device users, and the price is usually premium.
Choose it if: comfort and Bose’s presentation are your priorities. Skip it if: you want the strongest customization and broadest value.
3. Sennheiser MOMENTUM 4 Wireless — best for music and battery life
The MOMENTUM 4 is the music-first recommendation. Its 42-mm drivers, EQ and personalization controls, adaptive ANC, transparency mode, multipoint-related features, and up to 60 hours of claimed playback make it especially attractive to frequent listeners. Sennheiser’s U.S. page displayed $299.95 during the August 2026 snapshot.

It does not match Sony for ANC or microphone performance, so it is better for listeners whose calls are mostly indoors. The long battery life is manufacturer-rated and varies with volume, codec, ANC, calls, and battery age.
Choose it if: you want a musical sound and long endurance. Skip it if: noisy commuting and outdoor calls are your main use.
Rank #2

- HIGH QUALITY SOUND: Great sound quality customizable to your music preference with EQ Custom on the Sony | Headphones Connect App.
- LIGHT & COMFORTABLE: The lightweight build and swivel earcups gently slip on and off, while the adjustable headband, cushion and soft ear pads give you all-day comfort.
- CRYSTAL CLEAR CALLS: A built-in microphone provides you with hands-free calling. No need to even take your phone from your pocket.
- MULTIPOINT CONNECTION: Quickly switch between two devices at once.
4. Apple AirPods Max 2 — best for Apple users
AirPods Max 2 makes the most practical sense inside an Apple household. Automatic switching, Spatial Audio with head tracking, Siri-related features, Find My support where applicable, transparency, and USB-C lossless and ultra-low-latency audio can outweigh its hardware compromises.
Apple rates it for only up to 20 hours with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled. RTINGS generally finds Sony stronger for noise attenuation, microphone quality, and customization, while AirPods Max offers more consistent audio delivery between reseats and better Apple integration.

5. Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S3 — best premium sound alternative
The Px7 S3 targets listeners who want refined wireless sound and premium construction more than maximum call or ANC performance. It is a compelling music-focused alternative to Sony and Bose, but its premium may be difficult to justify for commuters who mainly want the strongest isolation.
Choose it if: music quality and build feel are worth paying for. Skip it if: calls and maximum ANC are the deciding factors.
6. JBL Tour One M3 — best feature-rich travel option
JBL’s Tour One M3 belongs on a travel shortlist because it combines ANC, multipoint, long claimed battery endurance, and a broad feature set. Its sound signature and app experience are more personal choices than universal strengths.
Choose it if: you want many travel features in one over-ear model. Skip it if: you want the most predictable call recommendation.
7. Sony WF-1000XM6 — best premium compact Sony option
These flagship earbuds deliver high-end Sony music, ANC, and a compact design. Their improved microphone hardware makes them a serious call option, but comparative impressions vary by environment. TechRadar reported muffled voice impressions relative to the Technics EAH-AZ100 in its testing.
As with every earbud, seal and ear shape determine bass, ANC, comfort, and microphone placement. Choose it if: portability matters more than over-ear battery life. Skip it if: you regularly call in strong wind or cannot achieve a stable seal.

In-ear comfort and ear-tip sealing vary substantially. It is less attractive for Android users, and its small batteries cannot match premium over-ears for continuous playback. Choose it if: you want the smallest reliable Apple option. Skip it if: you dislike in-ear designs or need maximum battery life.
9. Technics EAH-AZ100 — best music-and-calls earbuds
The EAH-AZ100 is a strong alternative for listeners who want detailed music, ANC, multipoint, and capable microphones. What Hi-Fi identifies it as a leading combined audio, ANC, and microphone option, while TechRadar reported clearer calls than the Sony WF-1000XM6 in its comparison.
Choose it if: call clarity and music quality both matter in a compact form. Skip it if: its stemless fit does not stay secure in your ears.
10. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) — best earbud ANC and comfort alternative
These earbuds offer effective noise reduction, multiple fit options, and immersive listening modes. They are worth considering when Bose’s fit works better for you than Sony or Technics.

The Space Q45 offers adaptive ANC, multipoint, EQ controls, two-microphone call processing, and up to 50 hours of claimed playback. Soundcore’s U.S. page displayed $149.99 during the research snapshot.
Its microphones, sound refinement, and build are below premium models. It is nevertheless a persuasive value when discounted or when you need travel ANC on a tighter budget. Choose it if: price, ANC, and battery matter most. Skip it if: you need premium outdoor calls or polished sound.
12. Audio-Technica ATH-M50xBT2 — best music-first wireless value
The ATH-M50xBT2 offers the familiar closed-back M50 presentation, LDAC and AAC, EQ control, multipoint, dual microphones, a 3.5-mm wired option, and up to 50 hours of claimed battery life. A 10-minute charge is rated for up to three hours of playback.

It has no ANC and is bulkier and less travel-oriented than the leading noise-cancelling models. Choose it if: music and wired fallback matter more than isolation. Skip it if: you commute in noisy environments.
13. Shokz OpenComm2 — best for awareness-first calls
The OpenComm2 uses an open-ear design and boom microphone, making it useful in offices, on walks, and anywhere you must remain aware of people and traffic. The boom has a physical advantage for consistent speech pickup.
Open-ear audio cannot isolate airplane noise, deliver sealed-headphone bass, or protect music privacy. It also leaks sound. Choose it if: awareness and calls outrank music immersion. Skip it if: you need ANC or bass-heavy listening.
14. Sony WH-CH720N — best affordable everyday ANC
The WH-CH720N is a lightweight, lower-cost route into Sony’s ANC and app-based EQ. It supports calls and is often discounted, but its sound, controls, construction, and battery endurance are below the XM6.
Choose it if: you find it at a substantial discount. Skip it if: its price approaches the better-built alternatives.
15. Logitech Zone Vibe 100 — best affordable work-from-home headset
The Zone Vibe 100 is designed around computer calls, with a lightweight office-oriented build and boomless microphone. It is suitable for home workers who value a simple work headset more than premium ANC or music reproduction.
Choose it if: work calls dominate and your music needs are modest. Skip it if: you want one premium pair for travel, music, and noisy environments.

Best Value
- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
AirPods Max 2 vs Sony WH-1000XM6 for iPhone users
AirPods Max 2 wins on Apple-specific convenience, Spatial Audio, and USB-C lossless and low-latency audio. Sony wins on battery endurance, customization, and generally stronger noise and microphone comparisons. Buy Apple only if its ecosystem benefits justify the shorter battery life.
AirPods Pro 3 vs Sony WF-1000XM6
AirPods Pro 3 is the easier iPhone recommendation for switching, transparency, and voice features. Sony is the more natural choice for Android and mixed-device users. For either model, test the ear-tip seal and outdoor call performance during the return period.
Over-ears vs earbuds for work calls
Choose over-ears for desktop comfort, longer battery life, and passive isolation. Choose earbuds for portability and quick phone calls. If your office is consistently noisy, a dedicated business headset such as a Logitech Zone or Jabra Evolve model may provide more reliable call controls and voice consistency, though usually less engaging music.

What to check before buying
- Call environment: Indoor calls are easier than calls in wind, traffic, or nearby speech. Boom microphones often help in offices.
- Fit: Glasses, hair, hats, clamp, ear-tip seal, heat, and ear shape can change comfort and ANC performance.
- Device support: Confirm multipoint, Fast Pair, automatic switching, and app availability for your phone and computer.
- Codecs: LDAC, aptX, AAC, LC3, and other codec labels do not guarantee better sound. The source device, operating system, Bluetooth mode, and app must support the relevant codec.
- Wired use: A cable may work when wireless does not, but some headphones still require power for ANC or DSP. USB-C audio, analog audio, and Bluetooth can differ in latency and sound.
- Battery: Manufacturer “up to” figures are not identical tests. Volume, ANC, codec, Spatial Audio, calls, temperature, and battery age all matter.
- Returns and spares: Check the return window, warranty, replacement ear pads or tips, and current U.S. stock before ordering. Previous-generation models can be better value when discounted, but only if inventory and support remain clear.
When the headphones arrive, test a phone call, Zoom or Meet call, music at your normal volume, ANC and transparency, multipoint switching, and an outdoor call if that is part of your routine. Do this before the return deadline.
Music and call basics that matter
For music, listen for tonal balance, detail, separation, comfort, EQ flexibility, and whether wired playback is available. Warm or bass-forward models can make modern music enjoyable; neutral models may suit acoustic and analytical listening; bright models can emphasize detail but may become tiring. Spatial Audio is useful for compatible films, games, and music mixes, but it is not automatically higher-fidelity stereo listening.
For calls, separate four questions: can the other person hear your voice clearly, can the microphones reject keyboard noise and wind, can you hear the caller, and do mute, sidetone, answer, and device-switching controls behave reliably? A headset can sound excellent for music and still be mediocre outdoors.
ANC is most useful against steady low-frequency aircraft and train rumble. It is less consistent against voices, and wind can overwhelm both ANC and microphones. Open-ear models improve awareness but sacrifice isolation, bass, and privacy.
Hearing safety
Keep listening levels moderate and take breaks. ANC can make lower volumes more comfortable, but it does not make high-volume listening safe.
