For most lifters, the best pick is the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2: its ear hooks help keep the earbuds in place through bench presses, squats and fast transitions, while ANC, transparency mode and physical controls make them more versatile than a basic workout pair. If you want a lower-cost option with stronger water protection, look at the JBL Endurance Peak 3; for outdoor awareness, choose the Shokz OpenRun Pro 2.

“Headphones” here includes earbuds, open-ear models and over-ear headphones. That matters because the best-sounding pair is not necessarily the pair that stays put when you lie on a bench or handle a sweaty set. This guide prioritizes lifting fit, documented water resistance and practical gym use—not a universal ranking of sound quality.

Battery figures are manufacturer estimates or reported test results, not guarantees. Earbud case totals are not directly comparable with listening time per charge. ANC, volume, calls, temperature and battery age can all reduce runtime. Prices are intentionally omitted: they fluctuate by retailer and region, and a sale price should not be mistaken for a stable recommendation.

The 15 best headphones for lifting

1. Beats Powerbeats Pro 2 — best overall for lifting

The Powerbeats Pro 2 are the clearest all-around recommendation if keeping earbuds in place is your first concern. Their ear hooks provide a physical anchor that is useful for bench work, deadlifts and circuit training, while physical controls are easier to operate than touch surfaces when hands are sweaty. They add ANC, transparency mode and heart-rate sensing, and work with iOS and Android.

Soundcore by Anker Q20i Hybrid Active Noise Cancelling Headphones, White
  • Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
  • Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
  • 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
  • Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
  • Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.

Beats rates them for up to 10 hours of listening per charge, eight hours with ANC on, and up to 45 hours including the charging case. The IPX4 rating covers splashes, not immersion; it is suitable for ordinary sweat exposure with sensible care, but it is not a high water-resistance rating. A hook improves security, not certainty: check the fit during warmups and see whether it remains comfortable around your ears. See Beats’ specifications.

Buy them if: you want a stable, feature-rich pair for lifting across phone ecosystems. Skip them if: you need stronger water protection or ear hooks bother you.

2. Apple AirPods Pro 3 — best for iPhone users

AirPods Pro 3 combine Apple ecosystem convenience with ANC, transparency mode, heart-rate sensing and multiple ear-tip sizes. Current coverage reports a revised fit that is more secure for workouts than earlier AirPods Pro models, but a sealed earbud still depends on your ear shape and correct tip size. Try the different tips before relying on them for heavy sets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apple lists up to eight hours with ANC and up to 24 hours with the case. They carry an IPX4 rating, so treat them as splash-resistant rather than immersion-safe. They also work with Android, but some Apple-specific convenience and fitness features are designed around Apple devices. Check Apple’s current specifications.

Buy them if: you use an iPhone and want one pair for gym and everyday listening. Skip them if: you are on Android and do not need Apple integration, or the fit moves when you lie down.

3. Shokz OpenRun Pro 2 — best for outdoor awareness

The OpenRun Pro 2 uses an open-ear, bone-conduction-style design, leaving the ear canal unobstructed so you can hear nearby people and environmental sounds. That makes it a better match than sealed ANC earbuds for outdoor exercise near other people or traffic. Shokz lists up to 12 hours of battery life, USB-C charging and an IP55 rating.

The trade-off is inherent to open-ear listening: you give up much of the isolation and deep bass of sealed earbuds, and sound can leak. It is not the right choice if you want to shut out a loud commercial gym or feel heavy sub-bass. See Shokz’ product details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy them if: hearing your surroundings matters more than isolation. Skip them if: you want powerful bass or privacy in a quiet room.

4. JBL Endurance Peak 3 — best budget ear-hook earbuds

The Endurance Peak 3 offer ear hooks and an IP68 rating, a strong combination for lifters who want a more secure design and more water protection than basic splash resistance. Battery estimates are roughly nine to 10 hours from the earbuds, depending on the source. They do not have ANC, so they will not suppress steady gym noise as well as a sealed ANC model.

The hooks and larger housings may feel bulky, especially on smaller ears. IP68 is a rating under defined test conditions, not a promise that sweat, salt, cleaning chemicals or long-term wear can never cause damage. Rinse or wipe only as the manufacturer permits, dry before charging, and do not put wet earbuds in the case. See JBL’s product page.

Buy them if: you want an affordable hook-style fit and high stated water protection. Skip them if: you need ANC or find larger earbuds uncomfortable.

5. Sennheiser MOMENTUM Sport — best for workout biometrics

MOMENTUM Sport is the fitness-specific option for readers who value more than music. The earbuds use wing-tip stabilization and include heart-rate and body-temperature sensors, with IPX5 protection and nearly seven hours of listening per charge. These features can add workout context, but they should not be treated as medical-grade measurements or an automatic replacement for a sports watch or chest strap. Readings depend on fit, contact, motion and compatible software.

Its ANC is not the primary reason to buy it, and the sensors may not justify the price if all you want is a secure way to play music. Check Sennheiser’s product information.

Buy them if: you will actually use the workout sensors and want a stabilized in-ear design. Skip them if: basic playback is enough for your training.

6. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds (2nd Gen) — best ANC earbuds

These Bose earbuds are for lifters who want strong noise cancellation in a compact format, along with an aware mode for hearing more of the room. They are a more practical gym shape than over-ear cups, but their sealed fit is not as mechanically anchored as an ear hook, and individual ears vary. The listed IPX4 rating is basic splash protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Comparison coverage lists up to 30 hours, but verify whether a battery figure refers to a single charge or total use with the case before comparing it with other earbuds. For a session with a spotter, coach or announcements, use the ambient mode rather than assuming ANC is harmless. See Bose’s current product listing.

Buy them if: ANC is a priority and the fit stays secure in your ears. Skip them if: you need a hook or higher water rating.

7. JLab JBuds Lux ANC — best value over-ear headphones

The JBuds Lux ANC are an inexpensive way to get over-ear comfort, ANC, foldable construction and USB-C wired audio. SoundGuys lists a 44-hour battery figure, Bluetooth 5.3 and a weight of 235 grams. Their bass-forward presentation may suit energetic playlists, though listeners can use EQ to adjust the sound.

No verified IP rating is highlighted, so these are a poor match for heavy sweat. Over-ear padding absorbs heat and moisture, and cups can press against a bench when you lie down. Wipe them after training and let them dry fully. Check JLab’s product details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy them if: you prefer over-ear headphones for controlled machine work and want to spend less. Skip them if: you sweat heavily or do floor-based lifting.

8. Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless — best comfortable over-ear option

RTINGS identifies the Bose QuietComfort Headphones as a strong tested over-ear workout option, citing comfort, low weight, isolation and a stable fit during moderate movement. They have about 26 hours of battery life and a warm, slightly bass-forward sound. For a person who dislikes earbuds, that comfort can matter more than maximum security.

They are not sweatproof: no IP rating is listed. Ear cups trap heat, and the fit can shift during high-intensity movement or when your head presses into a bench. Treat these as a gym-and-everyday crossover for controlled sessions, not a dedicated heavy-lifting sports model. See Bose’s product page and RTINGS’ workout comparison.

9. Bose QuietComfort Ultra Headphones (2nd Gen) — best premium over-ear ANC

These are a premium choice for someone who wants excellent isolation for a loud gym and also expects to use the headphones for travel, work or commuting. Current coverage lists up to 30 hours of battery life, strong ANC, adjustable ambient controls and USB-C lossless audio. The ambient option is useful when you need to hear a training partner or announcement.

There is no IP rating listed. The large cups also trap heat and can interfere with collars, benches or headrests. This is a lifestyle headphone that can serve for some workouts, not a purpose-built sweat-resistant lifting set. Check Bose’s current specifications.

Buy them if: premium ANC and everyday versatility matter more than gym-specific durability. Skip them if: your workouts are very sweaty or involve a lot of floor work.

10. Nothing Headphone (a) — best over-ear option for long battery and EQ

Nothing Headphone (a) is a mid-range over-ear alternative with an IP52 rating, LDAC support, spatial audio and parametric EQ support. RTINGS reports approximately 79.25 hours in its testing, an unusually long result that can suit people who do not want frequent charging. Test results can differ from use with ANC, high volume or calls.

RTINGS notes that comfort and ANC performance trail the Bose QuietComfort Headphones Wireless. IP52 is not a green light for soaking or sustained sweat exposure, and the over-ear fit remains less practical for bench exercises. See Nothing’s product page and RTINGS’ testing context.

Buy them if: you want an over-ear daily-use pair with EQ flexibility and long tested runtime. Skip them if: comfort, strongest ANC or sweat resistance is your top requirement.

11. Anker Soundcore Life Q20 2024 — best cheap over-ear headphones

The Life Q20 2024 pairs a low-cost over-ear design with ANC, app EQ and bass-heavy sound. RTINGS reports about 49 hours of battery life and finds it suitable for moderate movement such as machine workouts. It can be a practical inexpensive choice for warmups or lifting where you remain upright.

There is no IP certification listed, and the build is more plasticky than premium alternatives. Do not choose it for extremely sweaty training, abrupt movements or exercises where the ear cups contact a bench. See Soundcore’s product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy them if: price and battery matter most for moderate sessions. Skip them if: you need a secure fit for floor exercises or better sweat protection.

12. TREBLAB Z7 Pro Wireless — lower-midrange over-ear alternative

The Z7 Pro is another over-ear option for people who want a more affordable alternative to premium Bose models. RTINGS’ workout comparison identifies an IP52 rating and a relatively stable over-ear design. That makes it more plausible for moderate movement than an unrated pair, but it remains an over-ear headphone rather than a gym earbud.

Do not read IP52 as sweatproof or immersion-safe. It also should be viewed as a value alternative, not a direct match for premium models in ANC, refinement or comfort. Check current specifications, availability and warranty terms with the seller before buying. See TREBLAB’s product page.

13. Under Armour Project Rock by JBL — best rugged workout-branded over-ear design

This workout-branded JBL model includes IPX4 protection, substantial cushioning, app-based EQ and more than 41 hours of battery life in SoundGuys’ listing. It is built with exercise in mind and offers a more protected design than unrated over-ears, though its ear cups still retain heat.

At about 294 grams, it is heavy compared with earbuds, and its price may be hard to justify if all you need is music while lifting. IPX4 is splash protection, not a license to soak the headphones or charge them while damp. See JBL’s product page.

Buy them if: you specifically want a cushioned, workout-oriented over-ear design. Skip them if: weight, heat or value is a concern.

14. Soundcore AeroClip — best lightweight open-ear clip-on

AeroClip is a lightweight open-ear clip-on alternative to a headband-style bone-conduction design. SoundGuys lists IP55, 5.9 grams per earbud, Bluetooth 5.4, up to eight hours of playback, and SBC, AAC and LDAC support. Its open format allows more awareness of the room than sealed earbuds.

As with other open-ear options, expect less bass and isolation than sealed earbuds, plus some sound leakage. Check that the clip is comfortable on your ear before a long session; a light product can still create pressure in the wrong spot. See Soundcore’s product page.

Buy them if: low weight and awareness are priorities. Skip them if: you want powerful bass, strong ANC or a sealed listening experience.

15. Beats Powerbeats Fit — best wing-tip Beats option

Powerbeats Fit gives you a wing-tip stabilization design with ANC, IPX4 protection and iOS/Android compatibility. SoundGuys lists more than seven hours per charge. It is a more compact alternative to a full ear-hook design and can work well for general gym use if the wing matches your ear.

A wing does not anchor the earbud in the same way a hook does, so fit matters even more for heavy sets and floor work. IPX4 is basic splash protection. Check Beats’ product page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy them if: you want a stabilized, compact Beats earbud for ordinary gym sessions. Skip them if: you want maximum mechanical security for high-intensity lifting.

How to choose headphones for lifting

Start with movement and fit, not the sound demo

Ear hooks and wings add a physical stabilizer, making them the safer starting point for heavy lifting, supersets and dynamic movement. Sealed earbuds can isolate better and sound fuller, but only if the tip seals securely without loosening as you sweat. Open-ear models leave your ear canal clear but trade bass and isolation for awareness. Over-ears may be more comfortable for some people, yet they can slide, press into benches and trap heat.

Durable, secure, and convenient, these bluetooth headphones are an excellent companion for people who need reliable audio that keeps pace with their active routine.

Ear shape varies, so no design guarantees a perfect fit. Try alternate ear tips, follow the maker’s insertion and rotation guidance, and test the headphones during warmups before using them under a heavy load. If they loosen when you sweat or shift during a bench press, do not assume you will adapt; use a return window to find a more stable shape.

Understand IP ratings without treating them as a warranty

The first digit in an IP rating refers to dust protection; the second refers to water protection. An “X” means the product has no stated rating for that part of the test. For the products here:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • IPX4: protection against water splashes. A common baseline for ordinary sweat and light rain, but not immersion.
  • IP55: dust protection and resistance to water jets under specified test conditions.
  • IP57: stronger water protection, including temporary immersion under the defined test conditions.
  • IP68: high dust and water protection, but the precise test conditions are manufacturer-defined.
  • IP52: limited dust protection and resistance to dripping water under specified conditions—not a high-sweat guarantee.

An IP rating is a lab test, not a promise against months of salt-heavy sweat, soap, cleaning chemicals, worn seals or charging while wet. Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. A vague “sweat-resistant” claim is not equivalent to a published IP rating.

Use ANC thoughtfully

ANC is good at reducing steady, low-frequency sounds such as fans, treadmills and some background music. It is less effective against sudden voices, clanging plates and sharp impacts. In a private gym, that isolation may help you focus. In a busy gym, transparency or ambient mode is valuable for hearing a spotter, coach or announcement. Outside, open-ear headphones are generally the clearer choice when situational awareness matters.

Do not let noise control compromise safety. If you need to communicate during a lift, lower the volume or switch to ambient listening. One-ear listening is an option only when the exercise and environment make it safe.

Battery: compare like with like

Most workouts are much shorter than a headphone’s advertised runtime; the practical question is whether one charge covers several sessions. Six to eight hours per charge is enough for most gym use, while a charging case with 24–45 hours of total listed listening reduces how often earbuds need charging. Over-ear models with 25–30 hours are usually adequate for regular training; 40 hours or more is useful if they are also your commuting or work headphones.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Always check whether a number means earbuds alone or earbuds plus case, and whether ANC is on. Volume, calls, codec, temperature and battery age affect real-world results.

Controls and ecosystem matter mid-set

Physical buttons can be easier to use with sweaty fingers and less likely to trigger when you adjust an earbud. Touch controls may work well, but hats, hair and repeated adjustments can cause accidental inputs. iPhone owners may value AirPods’ Apple integration; Android users should check which app features work on their phone. Powerbeats Pro 2 are notable for broad iOS and Android support. Sensor features are only useful if the compatible app or workout workflow supports them.

Care for headphones after training

  • Wipe earbuds and exterior surfaces with a soft, dry or manufacturer-approved cloth after a sweaty workout.
  • Let earbuds, charging contacts and over-ear pads dry fully before storing or charging.
  • Do not use soap, solvents or cleaning sprays unless the manufacturer permits them.
  • For over-ears, wipe padding promptly; sweat and salt can wear faux leather, cause odor and eventually affect materials.
  • Replace removable ear pads when worn, if the manufacturer offers replacements.

Common problems and quick fixes

Earbuds keep falling out

Try each included tip size, then reinsert and rotate according to the product instructions. Test with a warmup, including the movements that usually dislodge them. A hook or wing may help, but if the fit is still unstable, choose another design rather than risking a distraction under load.

Bluetooth cuts out in a crowded gym

  1. Put both earbuds in their case, or power the headphones off and on.
  2. Toggle Bluetooth off and back on at the phone.
  3. Forget the headphones in Bluetooth settings and pair them again.
  4. Update the manufacturer’s app and firmware.
  5. Test with your phone nearby and away from smart gym equipment or other possible sources of interference.
  6. If the issue persists, follow the manufacturer’s model-specific reset instructions; reset steps differ by product.

Over-ear headphones feel hot or slip

This is a design trade-off, not necessarily a fault. Reduce use during the sweatiest or floor-based parts of a workout, wipe the pads afterward and let them dry. If cups hit the bench or keep sliding during sets, switch to earbuds rather than trying to secure the headphones with an unsafe adjustment.
