- Commuting: Look for a comfortable seal plus ANC that reduces steady engine or bus rumble. Over-ear ANC models such as the Life Q30 or Space One are candidates; compact ANC earbuds may suit you better if portability matters more.

What “cheap quality” should mean

Try ANC in the environment that matters to you. Some models change their tonal balance when ANC is enabled; inexpensive designs can also reveal hiss in a quiet room or amplify wind in ANC or transparency mode. ANC is not certified hearing protection unless a product is explicitly labeled and certified for that purpose.
Check sound, fit, calls, and connections—not just the spec sheet
- Sound: Listen for controlled bass, clear vocals, harsh treble, distortion at your normal volume, and changes across ANC or passive modes. “Hi-Res” labels and driver diameter are manufacturer specifications, not independent sound-quality ratings. EQ can help, but it cannot fix a poor fit or every driver limitation.
- Fit: For earbuds, test different tip sizes and confirm the seal; for headphones, consider clamp force, cup depth, padding, weight, heat, and glasses. Comfort is individual, not a universal promise.

When a cheap pair seems faulty
