Quick answer: For most HP laptop owners, Microsoft Defender is the best free choice and is already included with Windows. Bitdefender Total Security is the strongest all-around paid option; Norton 360 Deluxe suits families, ESET HOME Security Essential favors users who want a focused suite, and Avast One Essential or AVG AntiVirus Free are credible third-party free alternatives.
HP branding does not require a special antivirus. Your meaningful compatibility questions are Windows 10 or 11, edition (including S mode), processor, memory, storage and the number of devices you need to protect.
Does an HP laptop already have antivirus?
Most current consumer HP laptops ship with Windows, which includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus inside Windows Security. On Windows 11, open Settings → Privacy & security → Windows Security → Virus & threat protection. Confirm that real-time protection and security-intelligence updates are active, then check Windows Update.
Remove an expired trial suite if you do not intend to renew it. A compatible third-party antivirus normally changes Defender’s real-time-protection behavior; do not run two full real-time antivirus products together unless their documentation explicitly supports that arrangement.

How these recommendations were judged
This is an editorial ranking, not a copied laboratory leaderboard. Protection receives 35% of the judgment, performance 20%, features 15%, value 15%, ease of use and billing transparency 10%, and compatibility and availability 5%.
AV-TEST scores Protection, Performance and Usability on six-point scales. Its June 2026 Windows 11 consumer results are available at AV-TEST’s Windows home-user test. AV-Comparatives measures real-world protection, malware protection, false positives and system impact in separate reports, including its February–May 2026 Real-World Protection Test, March 2026 Malware Protection Test and April 2026 Performance Test. Those controlled tests used updated 64-bit Windows 11 systems, not every HP model.
Detailed reviews
1. Bitdefender Total Security — best paid antivirus overall
Bitdefender combines strong independent-test evidence with broad Windows protection and sensible defaults. AV-TEST listed version 27.0 with maximum displayed Protection, Performance and Usability scores in June 2026; AV-Comparatives also included it in 2026 protection and performance work. It suits users who want ransomware, web and network defenses without assembling separate tools.
The trade-off is subscription economics: compare the exact device limit, introductory offer and renewal price at Bitdefender’s US consumer page. A single HP laptop may not need every bundled extra.

2. Microsoft Defender Antivirus — best free option
Defender is built into supported Windows installations and integrates with Windows Security. AV-TEST gave Defender version 4.18 6/6 Protection, 6/6 Performance and 5.5/6 Usability in June 2026. AV-Comparatives tested it in its 2026 protection and performance work.
It is usually sufficient for ordinary browsing, email, streaming and schoolwork when Windows, browsers and applications update automatically. It does not replace backups, multifactor authentication, phishing awareness or careful downloads. Microsoft explains its controls at Windows Security support.
3. Norton 360 Deluxe — best family suite
Norton adds multi-device coverage, VPN, cloud storage and privacy or identity features depending on the plan. It is useful when one subscription must cover several computers and phones. Norton appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 real-world testing.
Renewal pricing matters: Norton’s March 2026 US table listed five devices with 50GB at $124.99 per year on renewal. That is not an introductory price. Check the current terms at Norton 360 Deluxe and Norton’s pricing page.

4. ESET HOME Security Essential — best focused paid choice
ESET offers configurable protection for technically confident users who prefer fewer bundled extras. ESET versions 19.0/19.1 appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 protection and performance reports. “Lightweight” is a positioning preference, not a universal measurement: results depend on your HP’s CPU, RAM, storage and workload. See ESET HOME Security for current plans.
5. McAfee Total Protection — best identity and scam bundle
McAfee combines malware and web protection with scam detection and identity features whose scope varies by plan and geography. It appeared in AV-TEST’s June 2026 test and AV-Comparatives’ 2026 consumer tests.
The US page displayed introductory first-year examples of $29.99, $49.99 and $89.99 for different tiers, with higher standard prices shown for some plans. Treat those as dynamic offers and compare renewal terms at McAfee Total Protection.
6. Avast One Essential — best free third-party alternative
Avast provides a separate dashboard and visible extras for users who do not want to rely solely on Windows Security. Avast Free Antivirus was covered by AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives in 2026. Free plans can show upgrade prompts, and privacy-sensitive users should read current data policies. See Avast’s official page.

7. AVG AntiVirus Free — best simple free alternative
AVG offers a straightforward free interface and broad independent-test coverage. It shares ownership and underlying technology with Avast, so treat the two as packaging and interface alternatives rather than wholly independent detection engines. See AVG’s official page.
8. Malwarebytes Premium — best cleanup companion
Malwarebytes is well suited to suspected infections, cleanup and second-opinion scans. Malwarebytes Premium 5.5 appeared in AV-TEST’s April 2026 test and AV-Comparatives’ 2026 work. It should not automatically be presented as the best primary antivirus, and its real-time mode should not be stacked with another real-time suite. See Malwarebytes.
9. F-Secure Internet Security — privacy-focused alternative
F-Secure covers malware, browsing and banking threats. AV-Comparatives included it in the February–May 2026 test and identified above-average false positives among products affected by downgrades. Evaluate that trade-off before buying at F-Secure Home.
10. Trend Micro Internet Security — web-threat specialist
Trend Micro emphasizes malicious-site, phishing and download blocking. Version 17.9 appeared in AV-TEST’s June 2026 test and its product was included in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 work; the February–May report noted above-average false positives among affected products. See Trend Micro’s consumer page.

11. Kaspersky Premium — availability-dependent choice
Kaspersky appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 testing and offers a broad suite. However, independent test inclusion does not establish that a US reader can legally purchase, download, renew or obtain support. Verify current US restrictions and distribution before considering Kaspersky US; it is not a general US recommendation.
12. Sophos Home Premium — remote household management
Sophos can help a technically capable person manage several home computers remotely. Consumer versions are not the same as Sophos enterprise endpoint products. AV-Comparatives tested Sophos Home versions in its 2026 cycles. See Sophos Home.
13. Panda Dome Advanced — flexible bundle
Panda offers a suite-style dashboard with optional privacy and optimization features. AV-Comparatives included Panda in 2026 and noted above-average false positives among products affected in the February–May report. Check the current US plan at Panda Security.
14. TotalAV Premium — broad dashboard, scrutinize value
TotalAV appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 real-world and malware-protection tests. Separate core antivirus protection from cleanup or optimization marketing, and examine billing and upsells at TotalAV.

15. G DATA Total Security — niche alternative
G DATA appeared in AV-Comparatives’ 2026 performance and real-world materials, with above-average false positives noted among affected products. It may suit an existing subscriber, but typical US buyers should verify current sales, support and plan availability at G DATA.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Best antivirus by situation
- Free protection: Microsoft Defender.
- Best paid upgrade: Bitdefender Total Security.
- Several family devices: Norton 360 Deluxe, Bitdefender or McAfee plan with the required device count.
- Older or lower-powered HP: Start with Defender; if you buy, compare independent performance results rather than trusting “lightweight” labels.
- Phishing and unsafe links: Trend Micro or a suite with browser protection, combined with cautious browsing.
- Privacy bundle: Evaluate Norton, McAfee, F-Secure or a Bitdefender plan by VPN limits and identity coverage.
- Suspected infection: Malwarebytes as a cleanup or second-opinion tool, not automatically a second real-time suite.
- Business-managed laptop: Follow the employer or school’s managed endpoint policy, not a personal consumer subscription.
Free versus paid antivirus
Free protection generally covers core malware detection and real-time scanning. Paid plans mainly buy convenience: more devices, VPN or password tools, parental controls, identity monitoring, centralized management and extra web defenses. These extras vary by tier, country and operating system. Compare device count, users, storage, VPN limits, auto-renewal and refund window—not just the first-year banner.
Older HP laptops, Windows 10 and S mode
An older HP may use Windows 10, have an unsupported Windows 11 CPU, 4GB of RAM, limited storage, legacy drivers or Windows 10/11 S mode. Check the laptop’s Windows edition and vendor minimum requirements before installation. S mode restricts applications to Microsoft Store-compatible software, so follow the edition’s documented switching or compatibility path rather than assuming every desktop antivirus can install. Any Windows 10 end-of-support date or current vendor support statement should be confirmed on the publication date.
How to switch antivirus safely
- Save work and note your current subscription, account and renewal date.
- Uninstall an expired or unwanted trial from Settings → Apps → Installed apps, then restart when prompted.
- Run Windows Update and install security-intelligence updates.
- Install the replacement only from its official vendor page and choose the correct Windows and device-count plan.
- Restart, open Windows Security and verify that the intended product’s real-time protection is active.
- Run a full scan and remove leftover trials or duplicate real-time products.
If your HP laptop may already be infected
- Stop entering passwords or payment details on the suspect laptop; disconnect it from sensitive accounts if compromise is plausible.
- Update Windows and the installed security tool, then run a full scan.
- Use an approved offline or second-opinion scan when the security vendor recommends it.
- From a known-clean device, change important passwords and enable multifactor authentication.
- For ransomware or serious compromise, disconnect affected storage and restore only from a verified backup; obtain professional or organizational IT help for business systems.
What antivirus cannot do
Antivirus cannot guarantee safety from scam calls, social engineering, fraudulent websites, stolen passwords or data loss. Keep Windows and applications patched, use unique passwords with multifactor authentication, maintain tested backups and verify unexpected payment or support requests independently. HP Wolf Security and other hardware-backed or managed business controls are enterprise offerings, not automatic replacements for consumer antivirus.
