Google Lens can turn what your camera sees into something you can use: copied text, a translation, a phone call, a Maps destination, or information about an unfamiliar object. It is more than visual search—but the buttons you see depend on where you open Lens, your device, language, and region.
Here are 14 practical ways to use Lens on Android, with the paths to try and the checks that keep a quick shortcut from becoming a mistake.
Open Lens on Android
There is no single Lens screen shared by every Android phone. The feature appears in several Google apps, and menus can differ between them.

Take a picture or choose one from your device, then tap text or an object, or adjust the selection.
- Google Photos: Open a photo, tap More, then Google Lens.
- Chrome: Tap the Lens icon on a new tab, or touch and hold a webpage image and choose Search image with Google Lens.
- Other options: Some camera apps include Lens. On supported devices, Assistant can offer Search screen; Google Go has Lens Go features for searching, translating, and listening to text. These are alternatives, not identical interfaces.

Turn images into text
1. Copy text from paper instead of typing it
Use Lens on notes, menus, receipts, signs, labels, or printed instructions. In the Google app, open Lens, photograph or upload the page, tap the text or adjust the selection box, then choose Select text and Copy. Paste it into a message, document, or search.
Select just the paragraph, number, or field you need. Glare, shadows, curved pages, handwriting, and unusual fonts can confuse text recognition. Check names, numbers, punctuation, and line breaks before using the copied text.
2. Translate signs, menus, and labels
Open Lens in the Google app, choose Translate, and set the source and target languages in the language picker. You can use it on photographed or uploaded text, such as a transit sign, menu, package, or museum label.

Language availability depends on the workflow. Google Photos documents a narrower set of languages for its screenshot-translation process than the general Lens translation guidance. Do not assume that every language or Photos workflow supports the same options. For legal, medical, technical, or safety-critical text, confirm the translation with a reliable human or professional source.

3. Listen to recognized text
Select text in Lens and tap Listen, where available. This can help with long instructions or let you hear a passage while you are occupied with something else. Google Go’s Lens Go also supports reading recognized text aloud, including translations.
Listening does not validate the recognition: compare important names, addresses, doses, and numbers with the original image.
4. Search a phrase without retyping it
Select an unfamiliar name, technical term, or long phrase in an image and tap Search. A tight selection reduces unrelated matches. If the results are too broad, add a descriptive keyword. Lens can also refine image searches with extra terms using Ask about this image, where available.

5. Call a number from a sign or card
Lens may recognize a phone number on a business sign, appointment card, flyer, invoice, or screenshot and offer Call. Check the digits before dialing. Lens recognizes text; it does not establish that a number belongs to a legitimate business.

6. Text a number without typing it
For a recognized number, Lens may also offer Text. This is handy when a number is printed on a notice or visible in a photo. Review the number and recipient before sending a message, especially if the image came from an unsolicited source.
7. Save a business card as a contact
Photograph a business card, select the recognized contact details, and choose Add to contacts if the option appears. Inspect the proposed name, company, email address, and phone number before saving; OCR can misread characters or put details in the wrong field.
8. Open a website or email address from a photo
Lens can recognize a web or email address on packaging, posters, signs, or a screen and offer an action to open it or compose an email. Check the address carefully first. Characters such as 0 and O, or 1, l, and I, are easy to confuse, and a recognized URL is not necessarily trustworthy.

When Lens recognizes an address, it may offer Maps. Try this with an invitation, storefront sign, property listing, or printed directions. Confirm the destination against the image: Lens can omit apartment or suite numbers, misread street names, or need help with an international address.

10. Track a shipment from its number
Point Lens at a tracking number on a shipping label, receipt, notice, or email screenshot. If it recognizes the number and a supported tracking flow is available, it may offer Track a shipment. If not, copy the number and enter it on the carrier’s official website or in its app.
11. Add an event from a flyer to your calendar
In Google Photos, Lens may offer a calendar action for an event flyer or billboard. Before saving, check the date, start and end times, time zone, venue, and whether the event repeats. Confirm any ticket or registration requirements separately.

12. Get help understanding a homework problem
The Google app’s Lens guidance includes a Homework option for math and science questions, word problems, geometry, and diagrams. Photograph or upload the question and select it to explore help. Treat this as a study aid, not an answer key: check the reasoning and make sure you understand the method. Ambiguous notation, complicated diagrams, and blurry pages can lead to unreliable results.
13. Get an initial lead on a plant or animal
Photograph a plant or animal to find possible matches and related information. Lens can help narrow down what you are looking at, but visual identification is not expert confirmation. Never rely on it alone to decide whether a wild plant is edible, whether an animal is dangerous, or whether a pet has a medical condition.

14. Research landmarks, artwork, and products
Lens can surface information about landmarks and buildings, and help you find information about a painting or its artist. It can also identify products such as apparel and home goods, show similar items, and use barcodes to find product information. Availability of shopping features depends on region.
For a building or artwork, treat facts and opening hours as a starting point and verify current details with the venue. For shopping, isolate the item in the selection box and compare listings: a visual match may be similar rather than identical. Check the model number, price, stock, shipping, seller, warranty, and return policy yourself. A barcode or model label can help confirm the exact product.
Get better results from Lens
- Choose a precise selection. Tap the relevant text or object, or drag the selection corners around only what matters. Exclude background items; select one paragraph, address, or product rather than the whole scene.
- Improve the image. Move closer, clean the camera lens, hold the phone steady, and use good lighting. Avoid glare and shadows. For an existing picture, try a sharper, tightly cropped version.
- Correct the search. If Lens selects the wrong object, tap the right one, adjust the box, or crop first. Add descriptive keywords to an image search.
- Verify anything consequential. Check OCR, translations, destinations, event details, product listings, and identification results against a trustworthy source.
If the expected button is missing, it may not be available through that app or on that device, language, or region; the image may not have been recognized as the relevant type, or the feature may be changing or rolling out selectively. The Google app, Photos, Chrome, and Assistant do not necessarily show the same actions.
Privacy and when ordinary search is better
Lens processes images or screen content to answer a query. Google’s Chrome documentation says that when Lens searches webpage content, a screenshot and page data are sent to Google to help select objects; Google says that this data is not used for training as a result of that process and is not saved beyond temporary processing for that query. That statement is specific to the Chrome workflow, not a blanket description of every way to use Lens. Google Photos also provides controls for Lens activity, including Visual Search History and Web & App Activity; see its Lens and activity guidance.
Avoid using Lens on highly sensitive material—such as passports, medical or financial records, passwords, private correspondence, or confidential workplace documents—unless you have a clear reason. If you do use it, review the relevant activity controls.
Lens is most useful when typing would take longer, the words are unfamiliar, or you do not know an object’s name. Typed search is often better when you already know the exact query or need precise, current information such as laws, schedules, prices, or official availability. For blurry, cluttered, or reflective images, retaking the picture—or simply typing a few words—may be faster than correcting a poor visual match.
