The Dynamic Island is more than a cutout around the front camera. On compatible iPhones, it is a compact system surface for ongoing activities such as music, navigation, timers, calls, recordings, AirDrop transfers, and supported third-party Live Activities.
Most of its usefulness comes from four gestures: tap an activity to open it, touch and hold to expand it, swipe inward to collapse it, and swipe across to switch between two active activities.
Before you start
The Dynamic Island debuted on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max; the standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus do not have it. Apple’s later iPhone generations and current comparison listings include additional compatible models, so check Apple’s iPhone comparison page if you are unsure about a particular device.

The Dynamic Island is not a widget gallery, and installing an app does not automatically make it appear there. Third-party apps generally need to support Apple’s Live Activities framework.

Master the four essential gestures
1. Tap to return to the related app
Start an activity such as music playback, navigation, a timer, a recording, or a call, then leave the app. Tap its compact Dynamic Island activity to reopen the associated app, usually at the relevant screen.
This is the quickest way to return to Maps navigation, the Music player, an active Voice Memos recording, or the Phone app during a call. A tap normally opens the app; it does not necessarily reveal expanded controls.
2. Touch and hold to expand an activity
Touch and hold the Dynamic Island until the expanded view appears. Depending on the activity, it may show music controls, timer details, navigation information, call controls, recording status, or delivery and sports updates.
The controls are not universal. Some activities provide actions such as play or pause, while others only display status information.
3. Swipe inward to collapse it
When an activity is expanded, swipe from either the left or right edge toward the center. The Dynamic Island returns to its compact form while the underlying activity continues.
Collapsing the island does not stop a timer, end navigation, pause music, or finish a recording. To end the activity, use its available controls or return to the source app.

4. Swipe across to switch between activities
Start two compatible activities—for example, music and a timer. When both are active, swipe from one side of the Dynamic Island toward the other to move between them.

This lets you check a call, delivery, navigation session, or music player without losing sight of another ongoing task.
Everyday built-in uses
5. Control music without reopening the Music app
Play audio in Apple Music or a compatible audio app, then leave the app. Tap the Dynamic Island to return to playback or touch and hold it to reveal the controls that the app provides.
Apple Music may expose actions such as play, pause, or skipping. Third-party audio apps can present a different interface, so the Dynamic Island does not guarantee identical controls for music, podcasts, audiobooks, or streaming services. Apple describes Music as an activity that can remain visible in the Dynamic Island in its iPhone 14 Pro announcement.
6. Keep a countdown timer visible
- Open the Clock app.
- Set and start a timer.
- Leave Clock and use another app.
- Check the countdown in the Dynamic Island.
Tap the activity to return to the timer or touch and hold it if controls are available. It is useful for cooking, workouts, laundry, parking sessions, and focus periods. Timers are one of the examples Apple identifies for the Dynamic Island.

- Open Maps and enter a destination.
- Start navigation.
- Return to the Home Screen or another app.
- Use the Dynamic Island to check the active navigation activity.
Tap it to return to Maps or touch and hold it for a larger view when available. The island is a glanceable companion, not a replacement for the full map: route changes, lane guidance, and destination searches may require opening Maps. Apple lists Maps directions among the activities shown there in its iPhone User Guide.

8. Monitor a Voice Memos recording
- Open Voice Memos and start recording.
- Leave the app.
- Use the Dynamic Island to confirm that recording remains active.
- Tap the activity to return to Voice Memos.
The indicator confirms activity, but it is not a guarantee that a recording will be saved after an app crash, unexpected stop, or low-storage problem. Apple specifically cites Voice Memos as a Dynamic Island activity.
9. Track a screen recording
- Add Screen Recording to Control Center if necessary.
- Start a screen recording.
- Return to the Home Screen or another app.
- Use the Dynamic Island indicator to see that recording is active.
- Stop recording through the available system control.
This is useful for documenting a troubleshooting step, app workflow, or game session. Check the finished video in Photos afterward, particularly if your iPhone is low on storage. The exact presentation and controls can vary by iOS release.
10. Watch AirDrop activity
Start sending or receiving content with AirDrop, then leave the sharing screen if needed. The Dynamic Island can show the active AirDrop connection or progress; tap it to return to the relevant activity when available.
Confirm that the file arrived. A visible progress indicator is not proof that the transfer completed, and transfers can pause or fail if devices move out of range or do not meet AirDrop requirements. Apple lists AirDrop as an example in its support documentation.
11. Manage Phone and FaceTime calls
Start or answer a phone or FaceTime call, then leave the full-screen call interface to use another app. The compact call activity remains available in the Dynamic Island. Tap it to return to the call screen or touch and hold it if additional controls appear.
The compact view is less disruptive than a full-screen call interface, but it is not inherently private: someone looking at your unlocked screen may still see that a call is active.

12. Check system events such as Face ID, charging, and AirPods
The Dynamic Island can temporarily animate or display system events such as Face ID authentication, charging confirmation, AirPods connections, AirPlay, and other accessory-related activity. These are transient system alerts, not permanent widgets, and they generally cannot be pinned or customized.

Unlock more with Live Activities
13. Enable Live Activities for individual apps
Live Activities are the main way supported third-party apps show ongoing, glanceable information in the Dynamic Island. They are designed for current events and progress—not static shortcuts or ordinary notification banners.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the relevant app.
- Turn on Live Activities if that option is available.
- Check the app’s notification settings as well.
- Reopen the app and start a supported activity.
Labels and settings locations can differ by iOS version. Depending on the release, related controls may also appear in broader notification or Face ID & Passcode settings. If there is no Live Activities option, the app may not support the feature, or it may offer it only for certain events, regions, accounts, or app versions.
Apple’s Live Activities design guidance explains that supported activities can appear while the app is not in use, with compact, expanded, and Lock Screen presentations.

- Install an app that supports Live Activities.
- Enable its notifications and Live Activities permissions.
- Start a qualifying event, such as following a game, ordering food, requesting a ride, or beginning a workout.
- Leave the app.
- Check the Dynamic Island for the live status.
- Touch and hold the activity for expanded information or controls.
Apple cites sports scores and ride-sharing as examples, while its developer documentation also describes delivery tracking, workouts, and other real-time tasks. Support, controls, subscriptions, and geographic availability can change independently of iOS, so do not assume that every app—or every event inside a supported app—will appear.

The iPhone does not support it
Confirm that your model has a Dynamic Island. The standard iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus are not Dynamic Island models, while the feature began with the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max and appears on later compatible generations.

The app only sends notifications
A normal notification does not automatically become a Live Activity. The developer must implement Apple’s ActivityKit-based Live Activities support, and the app may support only selected events or accounts. Check the app’s current settings and documentation.
Permissions are disabled
Enable notifications and, where offered, Live Activities for the app. Then start a qualifying activity again. Simply installing the app is not enough.
The activity ended, went stale, or was replaced
Live Activities are intended for time-sensitive tasks rather than permanent widgets. The app may remove an activity when the task ends, mark it stale, or stop updating it. Another active activity may also be taking the compact position.
The app was force-quit
Force-quitting an app can stop or interfere with its Live Activity. Reopen the app and start the activity again. If a system activity appears stuck, restart the iPhone.
Controls are missing
That may be intentional. Some activities provide only status information, while others offer limited actions such as playback or pause. Apple’s design guidance limits interactive elements to essential functions directly related to the activity.
Use the Dynamic Island without creating distractions
The best use cases are live, time-sensitive, and useful while you are doing something else: navigation, timers, music, calls, recordings, deliveries, rides, sports, and workouts. Static reminders, long-form content, permanent shortcuts, and frequent low-value updates are better handled elsewhere.

Consider privacy before enabling Live Activities. A ride, delivery, call, sports event, or workout status may reveal personal information to anyone who can see your unlocked screen. Lock Screen visibility and notification previews are separate settings worth reviewing.
If the Dynamic Island becomes distracting, disable Live Activities for individual apps rather than turning off every notification. Apps control how often their activities update, and Apple advises developers to avoid unnecessary updates and alerts.
