If your Mac’s F1–F12 keys stopped behaving normally after upgrading to macOS Tahoe 26, they are usually not broken. macOS supports two top-row modes: standard F1–F12 keys and hardware controls such as brightness, Mission Control, media playback, and volume.
First, press Fn/Globe + the affected key. Then open Apple menu → System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts → Function Keys and check Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys. Turn it on for direct F1–F12 shortcuts, or leave it off for direct brightness, volume, and media controls. If only an external keyboard fails, investigate its own Fn mode, connection, firmware, or utility software.
Apple has not confirmed a universal Tahoe 26 function-key bug, although some users have reported external USB keyboard problems after updating.

Identify the failure first

Before troubleshooting, note your Mac model, whether it uses Apple silicon or Intel, your exact Tahoe version, the keyboard model, its connection type, and which keys fail.

14 fixes for Mac function keys that do not work
1. Press Fn/Globe with the affected F-key
Open TextEdit, Finder, or another basic application and test the key alone. Then hold Fn/Globe while pressing it again. On some keyboards without an Fn key, Apple recommends trying Control with the function key.
If the combination works, the key is probably receiving input and the issue is a function-layer preference rather than a dead switch. See Apple’s function-key guidance.
2. Change the standard-function-key setting
- Choose Apple menu → System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Click Keyboard Shortcuts.
- Select Function Keys.
- Change Use F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys.
Turn the option on when F1–F12 should work directly in apps, games, terminals, editors, or music software. Turn it off when you want the printed brightness, playback, Mission Control, Spotlight, Dictation, or volume controls to work directly. The exact icons and assignments vary by Mac and keyboard.

3. Toggle the setting and restart
If the preference already has the desired value, switch it to the opposite value, switch it back, and restart the Mac. This is a low-risk recovery step reported by users, not an Apple-confirmed Tahoe repair.
4. Check the affected app’s shortcuts
Test the same key in TextEdit, Finder, System Settings, and a web browser. If it works everywhere except one application, open that app’s keyboard-shortcut settings.
Check whether the shortcut was removed, reassigned, or requires Fn. Games, virtual machines, remote-desktop clients, terminal multiplexers, music workstations, and video editors may deliberately capture F-keys.

5. Review macOS keyboard-shortcut conflicts
Open System Settings → Keyboard → Keyboard Shortcuts and inspect Mission Control, Services, Spotlight, Accessibility, Function Keys, and App Shortcuts.

Look for another shortcut assigned to the affected key. Remove or restore only the conflicting assignment instead of resetting all keyboard preferences.
6. Temporarily disable accessibility keyboard features
Go to System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard. Temporarily turn off Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, and Full Keyboard Access, then test again.
Full Keyboard Access can use keyboard commands to move focus, making an F-key appear to do something other than its application action. Also check whether VoiceOver or another accessibility shortcut was enabled accidentally. Restore any accessibility settings you need after testing. Apple’s keyboard guidance describes these focus and accessibility interactions.
7. Confirm the keyboard layout and input source
Open System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit. Confirm that the selected input source matches the physical keyboard and that the keyboard type was identified correctly.
A wrong layout usually affects letters and symbols rather than the function row, but it can cause confusing behavior after connecting a replacement, regional, or non-US keyboard.
8. Disable remapping and keyboard utilities
Quit or temporarily disable tools such as Karabiner-Elements, BetterTouchTool, Keyboard Maestro, Logitech Options or Logi Options+, vendor keyboard utilities, remote-desktop software, virtual-machine software, game overlays, and window-management tools.
Test again before changing or deleting configuration files. If the keys work after a utility is disabled, add the affected app or keys to that utility’s exclusions. Karabiner-Elements can be useful for advanced remapping, but it should not be the first troubleshooting step.
9. Switch a third-party keyboard to Mac mode
Many external keyboards have separate Mac and Windows modes, media-first or F-key-first modes, and an Fn lock. Check the keyboard’s manual for its model-specific shortcut or physical Fn-lock key.
If the keyboard has a configuration application, select its Mac profile and inspect the function-row assignment. Do not assume one Fn-lock shortcut works across brands.

10. Reconnect, recharge, or re-pair the keyboard
For Bluetooth keyboards, charge the battery, turn the keyboard off and on, then remove and pair it again through System Settings → Bluetooth. For USB keyboards, try another cable and port.
During testing, connect the keyboard directly to the Mac. Avoid a dock, monitor, hub, or KVM switch, since those devices can introduce power, cable, or compatibility problems.
11. Compare keyboards and ports
Test the MacBook’s built-in keyboard, the affected external keyboard, a second known-good keyboard, and another USB port. If possible, test the external keyboard on another Mac.
- Built-in works, external fails: focus on the external keyboard’s mode, firmware, connection, and utility software.
- External works, built-in fails: investigate macOS settings, accessibility, or a built-in keyboard fault.
- Every keyboard fails: continue with software isolation, Safe Mode, updates, and Diagnostics.
12. Install macOS and keyboard-firmware updates
Check System Settings → General → Software Update. Also check the keyboard maker’s official support application for firmware updates.
Record the exact Tahoe release, such as 26.0, 26.1, or later. Do not install a beta solely to fix an F-key problem. An update may help, but it is not guaranteed to resolve a software, firmware, dock, or hardware fault.
13. Test in Safe Mode
Safe Mode helps determine whether a login item, system extension, background utility, or third-party keyboard tool is intercepting the keys. Use Apple’s current Safe Mode startup procedure for your Mac’s processor type, then test the keys before opening third-party applications.

If the keys work in Safe Mode, review System Settings → General → Login Items & Extensions and re-enable utilities one at a time. If they still fail, hardware, firmware, or core macOS behavior becomes more likely.
14. Run Apple Diagnostics and arrange service if necessary
Use Diagnostics when several physical keys fail, both function layers fail, the problem occurs in every app, or the same issue persists with a known-good keyboard.

Apple silicon
- Shut down the Mac.
- Press and hold the power button until startup options appear.
- Release it when Options appears.
- Hold Command-D.
Intel Mac
- Turn on or restart the Mac.
- Immediately hold D.
- If necessary, try Option-D.
In macOS Tahoe 26 and later, Apple Diagnostics can offer a selectable keyboard test. Record any reference code and give it to Apple or a repair provider. See Apple’s Apple Diagnostics instructions.
If a known-good keyboard works, the original may have a failed switch, Fn key, battery, cable, connector, or firmware problem. If multiple keyboards fail only on one Mac, the Mac, its ports, dock, or software is more suspect.
What about an SMC reset?
Do not apply old Intel SMC-reset instructions to every Mac. Apple-silicon Macs reset SMC-related behavior through a normal restart or shutdown and startup. SMC troubleshooting mainly concerns power, charging, USB power, thermal behavior, sensors, and backlighting—not ordinary function-key mappings.
For an Intel Mac, follow Apple’s model-specific instructions in its SMC reset guide. An SMC reset is not a standard fix for a function-row preference or app shortcut.
Could Tahoe 26 be responsible?
Some Apple Community users have reported that external USB Apple keyboards lost Escape or top-row keys after a Tahoe update. This is anecdotal evidence, not confirmation of a universal Apple defect or its cause. The report is useful because it identifies a possible post-update failure mode.
If your issue began immediately after updating, test another keyboard, bypass hubs and docks, check the Function Keys preference, disable remapping software, install the latest available Tahoe update, and run Diagnostics. When contacting Apple, include your Mac model, keyboard model, connection type, Tahoe version/build, and exact affected keys. See the reported Tahoe keyboard issue for context.
Should you replace the keyboard?
Only replace hardware after isolating the fault:
- The problem follows the keyboard: contact the manufacturer or consider a replacement.
- The problem follows the Mac: contact Apple Support and repair.
- Only one app fails: change that app’s shortcut; new hardware is unlikely to help.
- Only a dock or hub causes the failure: troubleshoot the dock, cable, power, or port first.
Apple Diagnostics can identify some hardware faults, but a clean result does not rule out every firmware, software, app, or compatibility problem.
