You donāt need a special keyboard for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5: ordinary Bluetooth and USB keyboards can work. The right pick depends on whether you want a MacBook-like low-profile feel, mechanical feedback, a number pad, or easy switching among devices. One exception needs care: donāt assume Appleās external Touch ID keyboard works with the base M5 model; check Appleās compatibility information for your exact Mac before paying extra.

How to choose a Mac keyboard that behaves like a Mac keyboard
Basic compatibility is not the same as a good Mac layout
A keyboard may type perfectly on macOS yet have Windows legends, place Alt and Windows keys where Option and Command usually go, omit a Globe/Fn key, or offer awkward media shortcuts. A Mac-specific model typically gives you the expected Command and Option legends and Mac-oriented function-row behavior. Universal and Windows-focused boards can still work, but check modifier placement and remapping support before buying.

Touch ID is the important exception
Appleās external Touch ID keyboard is appealing for a desk or closed-lid setup, where the MacBookās built-in sensor is inaccessible. But Appleās compatibility documentation lists some Apple-silicon Macs, including 14-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro or M5 Max; it does not establish that external Touch ID works in every base-M5 configuration. Verify the exact model and current macOS support before purchase, and check the retailerās return policy. Choose the key feel youāll actually use
- Low-profile scissor or laptop-style: A good fit if you like the MacBookās shallow travel, want a slim board, or work in a quiet shared space. Appleās Magic Keyboard and Logitechās MX Keys line are the closest matches here. The trade-off is less switch and keycap customization.
- Low-profile mechanical: Boards such as the MX Mechanical Mini, Keychron K3 Pro, and NuPhy Air75 V3 add more distinct feedback without the height of a conventional mechanical keyboard. They remain taller and often louder than scissor boards, and their switch or keycap ecosystems can be more model-specific.
- Standard-height mechanical: Keychronās K2, Q1 Max, Q6 Max, and NuPhy Halo75 V2 offer a more substantial feel and, on suitable models, more customization. Expect more height, weight, and sound; a wrist rest may help if the keyboard sits higher than your laptop.

Pick a layout for your work, not just your desk photo
- 60%: Very compact, but often lacks dedicated arrow and navigation keys.
- 65%: Keeps arrow keys in a small footprint, usually with fewer dedicated navigation keys.
- 75%: Adds a function row and navigation cluster without taking up full-size width; a strong desk-and-travel compromise.
- Tenkeyless: Removes the number pad but preserves a familiar desktop layout.
- Full-size: The practical choice for spreadsheets, accounting, and frequent numeric entry.
- Split or ergonomic: Can suit long sessions, but changes hand position and takes practice. None of the 13 picks below is a split keyboard, so look beyond this list if that is your priority.
Bluetooth, USB cable, or receiver?
Bluetooth keeps the MacBookās ports free and avoids carrying a dongle. A 2.4GHz receiver may provide a more consistent connection or lower latency in a crowded wireless environment, but it occupies a port and can require a USB-A-to-USB-C adapter, dock, or monitor hub. Wired USB-C is useful as a dependable fallback and avoids pairing, though it ties the keyboard to the desk. Open laptop, stand, or closed-lid workstation

Common setup problems and how to fix them
Bluetooth pairing fails
- Charge the keyboard, then confirm it is in pairing mode and not connected to another device.
- On the Mac, open System Settings ā Bluetooth, remove the old keyboard entry if present, and pair again.
- If pairing still fails, test a USB-C wired connection if the model supports data over USB. A charging port alone does not guarantee wired typing.
- For a receiver-based keyboard, test the receiver without a hub or dock, then check its adapter or monitor-hub connection.
- Install a firmware update only if the manufacturer provides one for the exact model and macOS; not every keyboard supports Mac-based firmware updates.
Command and Option are swapped or misplaced
Use System Settings ā Keyboard ā Keyboard Shortcuts ā Modifier Keys, choose the external keyboard, and assign the modifiers that match your preferred layout. This changes modifier behavior; it does not add missing Mac legends or a Globe key.
A receiver needs an adapter
Some wireless receivers use USB-A, so a USB-C adapter, dock, or monitor hub may be required. If you want a no-adapter setup, choose Bluetooth or confirm that the exact keyboard bundle includes a USB-C receiver.
The keyboard will not wake a closed-lid Mac
Wake behavior can depend on the keyboard, macOS, connection route, display and power state, and whether the board has entered deep sleep. If a wireless setup fails, try a direct wired connection where supported and confirm the Macās external-display setup independently.
A feature stops working after a macOS update
Basic typing, vendor remapping software, firmware-dependent functions, and Apple-exclusive features are separate layers. Check the keyboard makerās current software and firmware support for the exact model before treating a nonworking shortcut or utility feature as a hardware failure.
