If your app already runs with docker run, the right place to host it depends on how much infrastructure you want to manage. A virtual private server (VPS) gives you control over the host and Docker, but also leaves patching, security, monitoring, and backups to you. A managed application platform or cloud container service takes on more of that work, while imposing its own deployment and runtime rules.
The available provider documentation supports a useful comparison of several options, not a defensible ranking of 13. This guide names the providers covered in the evidence and distinguishes what their published materials establish from what you should verify before choosing. It does not treat a vendor-authored recommendation as an independent test.
What “Docker hosting” means
Docker hosting is not one operating model. The phrase can mean renting a server and installing Docker yourself, deploying an app through a managed platform, or running an image on a cloud container service with a specific contract for ports, scaling, and execution.

- Self-managed VPS: You control the operating system, Docker Engine, networking, and deployment. You also take responsibility for host updates, hardening, monitoring, recovery, and backups.
- Managed application platform: The provider manages more of the underlying infrastructure and offers a deployment workflow for application components. You still need to understand the platform’s build, networking, data, and billing model.
- Cloud container service: You supply a container image, but the service may require specific image formats, ports, registries, or application behavior. It is not necessarily equivalent to running an unrestricted Docker host.
That distinction matters more than a “best” label. A web service that handles HTTP requests has different needs from a worker, scheduled job, stateful database, or process that must remain continuously active.

Providers and approaches supported by the available documentation
The following are comparison candidates, not a ranked list of 13 independently verified providers. The available evidence provides concrete primary-source details for DigitalOcean App Platform, Google Cloud Run, Azure Container Apps, and Render. A Fly.io-authored guide discusses eight approaches, including several additional names, but its recommendations and headline prices are vendor-authored and should not be read as independent evaluations.
| Provider or approach | What the available evidence establishes | What to verify for your app |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean App Platform | DigitalOcean describes a fully managed PaaS that deploys from Git repositories or container images and handles underlying infrastructure. Its pricing page lists a fixed shared container at 1 vCPU and 512 MiB for $5/month; components bill by the second with a one-minute minimum, while databases bill hourly with a one-hour minimum. See DigitalOcean App Platform pricing documentation and DigitalOcean pricing. | Current region-specific price, database costs, storage, egress, and any other components needed for a complete deployment. |
| Google Cloud Run | Cloud Run deploys container images from supported registries, including Artifact Registry, Docker Hub, and GitHub Container Registry under documented conditions. A service must listen on the injected PORT environment variable. A deployed revision resolves an image tag to a fixed digest. See Cloud Run deployment documentation and Cloud Run container contract. |
Whether the workload fits the service’s current execution, scaling, persistence, and pricing rules; confirm each in the current Google documentation. |
| Azure Container Apps | Microsoft documents Linux x86-64 images, public or private registries, optional sidecar and init containers, revisions after template changes, and automatic restart after a container crash. It manages Kubernetes and orchestration details. See Azure Container Apps overview. | Current plan, regions, scaling behavior, billing, persistent storage, and availability requirements for your workload. |
| Render | Render’s official pricing page confirms support for custom Docker containers and describes charges spanning a workspace plan, metered features, and application compute. See Render pricing. | The total price for the workspace and application resources you need; this is not a single directly comparable container price. |
| Fly.io | Included in a Fly.io-authored comparison guide, which also discusses other provider approaches. Its recommendations and prices are not independently verified here. See Fly.io pricing. | Current deployment, runtime, region, storage, support, and pricing details in Fly.io’s own documentation. |
| Railway | Named in the Fly.io-authored guide; no like-for-like primary-source comparison is established here. | Official image deployment, workload limits, persistence, availability, support, regions, and the full bill. |
| Heroku | Named in the Fly.io-authored guide; no like-for-like primary-source comparison is established here. | Current container deployment path, runtime limits, data services, regions, and total cost. |
| AWS ECS with Fargate | Named as an approach in the Fly.io-authored guide; no like-for-like primary-source comparison is established here. | Task and service configuration, networking, image storage, logs, scaling, availability, and charges across required AWS services. |
| Hetzner Cloud with Coolify | Named as a combined approach in the Fly.io-authored guide. This pairs a cloud server with a deployment tool; do not assume it has the same operational responsibility split as a fully managed app platform. | Which party manages the host, updates, security, backups, deployment tooling, and recovery, plus the combined cost. |
The comparison guide’s eight approaches are Fly.io, Render, Railway, Google Cloud Run, Heroku, DigitalOcean, AWS ECS with Fargate, and Hetzner Cloud paired with Coolify. Naming those approaches does not establish a complete or neutral “best 13” ranking. No like-for-like evidence here supports ranking 13 services on performance, reliability, or total price.
How to choose a hosting model
Choose a VPS when host-level control is a requirement
A VPS is a fit when you need to administer the operating system or Docker configuration directly and have the skills or operational capacity to maintain it. The trade-off is responsibility: plan for host patching and security, Docker updates, monitoring, backups, and recovery. A VPS provider renting you a machine is not automatically managing the containers you run on it.

Choose a managed platform when reducing infrastructure work matters most
A managed platform can take care of more of the underlying infrastructure and provide a deployment path from a repository or image. DigitalOcean describes App Platform this way. Read the product’s terms carefully: “managed” does not make every aspect of production—such as backups, secrets, availability, or application monitoring—someone else’s responsibility by default.
Choose a cloud container service only after checking its runtime contract
Cloud Run and Azure Container Apps illustrate why container compatibility needs more than a successful local docker run. Cloud Run services must listen on the provided PORT. Azure Container Apps documents Linux x86-64 images. Check architecture, ingress, startup and execution behavior, filesystem persistence, and scaling requirements against the provider’s current documentation before migrating.
What to check before deploying
A container image packages software; it does not, by itself, supply a complete production architecture. Use this checklist before comparing quotes or moving a workload:
- Build and image source: Can the service build from your Dockerfile, deploy a prebuilt image, or both? Which registries are supported, and are private registries configured differently?
- Application shape: Is this an HTTP service, background worker, scheduled task, stateful process, or always-on service? Confirm that the provider supports the workload pattern you actually run.
- Runtime contract: Check CPU architecture, listening port, startup behavior, health checks, filesystem persistence, and any execution or request limits.
- Data and recovery: Decide where persistent data lives, who backs it up, how restoration works, and whether the service needs a separately managed database.
- Operations and security: Identify how secrets, ingress, monitoring, logs, patching, and access control are handled. Do not assume that packaging the app in a container settles these questions.
- Scaling and availability: Confirm whether instances can scale to zero or must stay active, how replicas and regions work, and what setup is needed for high availability.
- Full cost: Include compute, memory, requests, storage, registry, outbound traffic, database, load balancing, workspace charges, and billing increments where applicable.
- Portability: A standard image can help with migration, but platform-specific configuration, identity, networking, and cloud-account dependencies can still make moving costly.
Compare total cost, not just the smallest advertised price
DigitalOcean’s published App Platform pricing page lists a fixed shared container with 1 vCPU and 512 MiB at $5 per month. DigitalOcean documentation says app components are billed by the second with a one-minute minimum, while database instances are billed hourly with a one-hour minimum. Those are specific published figures and billing terms, not an estimate for a complete production stack. Verify live pricing, regional differences, databases, and egress before committing.

For other candidates, the available sources do not establish a comparable full monthly cost. Render’s pricing structure includes a workspace plan, metered features, and application compute; a headline compute amount alone is not a total. For Cloud Run, Azure Container Apps, and the other named providers, check current primary pricing documentation and model your actual traffic, runtime, storage, and database needs. A useful estimate should state assumptions such as expected active time and resource size rather than compare unrelated entry prices.
Deployment details that can prevent a failed launch
Cloud Run: bind to the injected port
Configure the service to listen on the PORT environment variable supplied by Cloud Run, rather than assuming a fixed local port. Cloud Run’s deployment documentation says a deployed revision resolves the image tag to a digest, so changing a tag later does not change the image already running in that revision. Deploy a new revision when you intend to run a new image.
Azure Container Apps: check image architecture and revisions
Confirm that your image is Linux-based and x86-64 compatible and that the app can pull it from the configured public or private registry. Microsoft documents revisions when the app template changes, and automatic restart after a container crash. A restart is not a substitute for durable state or a recovery plan; keep important data outside an ephemeral container filesystem unless the storage design explicitly supports persistence.
DigitalOcean App Platform: account for separate components
App Platform’s managed deployment can reduce host-level work, but your app may still depend on separately billed components such as a database. Include those in the estimate and verify the live plan details before deployment.
Common selection and deployment problems
“It runs locally, but the hosted service does not become healthy”
Check the provider’s port and health-check contract first. On Cloud Run, make sure the process listens on the injected PORT. For other platforms, use their current service documentation rather than assuming the local port mapping carries over unchanged.
“The platform cannot pull or start my image”
Verify the registry URL, image tag or digest, credentials for a private registry, and the required CPU architecture. For Azure Container Apps, the documented image requirement is Linux x86-64; registry access must also be configured where the image is private.
“A deployment works, but data disappears after a restart”
Do not treat the container’s writable filesystem as durable storage without confirmation. Select an appropriate persistent storage or external database design and establish backups and restore procedures before relying on the service for important data.
Rank #3
“The advertised price is much lower than my bill”
Recalculate using every required component and its billing unit. Databases, workspace plans, metered features, storage, and outbound traffic can sit outside a container’s advertised compute price. Check provider pricing pages for current regional charges and minimum billing intervals.

If you also need clean website screenshots for documentation, QA, or an AI workflow, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. Every feature is on every plan; the free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
For example, this cURL request captures a page to WebP; replace the sample URL with the page you need and supply your API key:

Decision summary
Start by deciding whether you want to operate a server, use a managed application platform, or accept the contract of a cloud container service. Then validate the exact image, port, persistence, scaling, recovery, and cost requirements for your workload. The evidence supports concrete documentation-based checks for a few products, but not a neutral ranking of 13 providers or a universal winner.
