If you want to replace an Apple TV 4K, start with the Roku Ultra for a straightforward all-around box, the Google TV Streamer (4K) for Google Home and casting, or the NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for Plex, local media, and gaming. For a less expensive stick, consider Roku or Amazon Fire TV; for antenna channels and DVR, look at Tablo—but it is not a general-purpose streaming-box replacement.
This updates a topic originally framed around 2022. Product lineups have changed, so the list separates current mainstream alternatives from older or specialized devices. “Alternative” does not mean identical: no Roku, Fire TV, or Google device reproduces all of Apple’s tvOS, iCloud, Apple Arcade, and Apple-device integration.

1. Roku Ultra: best overall replacement
The Ultra is the closest fit for someone who wants a conventional, capable streaming box without moving to another highly technical platform. Roku lists 4K, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi 6, Ethernet, USB playback, Bluetooth headphone mode, and a rechargeable Voice Remote Pro. It also lists Apple AirPlay and HomeKit compatibility, which makes it a useful option for iPhone and iPad owners who do not require tvOS. See Roku’s Ultra specifications.

Choose it if you value a simple interface, broad mainstream streaming use, wired networking, or playing files from USB. The compromise is the interface: Roku promotes content and advertising more visibly than Apple TV. AirPlay and HomeKit do not provide Apple TV’s full integration with Apple services, iCloud, or Apple Arcade.
Roku’s U.S. page displayed $149.99 and a temporary $99.99 offer when checked for this guide; treat those as a dated snapshot, not a guaranteed price.
2. Google TV Streamer (4K): best for Google users
Google’s current streaming hardware is the Google TV Streamer, rather than the older Chromecast with Google TV. It combines the Google TV interface with casting, Google Home controls, Google Photos integration, Matter and Thread support, Ethernet, 32 GB of storage, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. Google says its processor is 22% faster than its predecessor. The U.S. Google Store listing showed $99.99 when checked.

3. NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro: best for Plex, local media and gaming
The SHIELD TV Pro is the most enthusiast-focused option here. NVIDIA lists a Tegra X1+ processor, 3 GB of RAM, 16 GB of internal storage, Dolby Vision, HDR10, AI-enhanced upscaling, Gigabit Ethernet, two USB 3.0 ports, Chromecast 4K, and GeForce NOW support. It makes sense for a Plex library, local files, USB accessories, upscaling, or cloud gaming. It is less compelling if you mainly want a low-cost device for the major streaming apps. NVIDIA specifies HDMI 2.0b; do not assume that a premium price means support for every newer HDMI feature. Actual app support, game availability, and performance depend on the content and service. No comparative speed claim is warranted without a defined test.
4. Amazon Fire TV Cube: best for Alexa households
The Cube is the full-size Fire TV choice for a home already built around Alexa. Its hands-free voice-control approach and Amazon integration can be convenient for controlling playback and compatible smart-home devices. Check the official Fire TV Cube page for the generation currently sold; Fire TV specifications and features vary between generations.
Its principal trade-off is the platform experience: Fire TV prominently features Amazon content and recommendations. It may be a poor fit if you want a neutral-feeling interface or are uncomfortable with voice-assistant microphones. Verify the exact model, HDMI capabilities, and current availability before buying.
5. Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K Max: best compact Fire TV choice
The 4K Max is the Fire TV option to consider if you want a small HDMI stick, particularly for a secondary television or an Amazon Prime and Alexa household. Use the official product page to confirm which generation is on sale and compare its current HDR, Wi-Fi, storage, and remote specifications.
A stick is easy to hide and typically costs less than a full-size box, but it is not the right match if you need built-in Ethernet, USB storage, or the expansion options of the SHIELD Pro. A low purchase price does not make it a like-for-like replacement for every Apple TV feature.

6. Roku Streaming Stick 4K: best compact Roku
Roku’s Streaming Stick 4K is the compact pick for people who want Roku’s app-focused streaming experience and 4K with Dolby Vision. Roku’s product page is the place to check the current model and features. It suits a TV where a small, tidy device is more important than ports.

Compared with the Ultra, the stick does not offer the same Ethernet and USB-centered setup. If wired networking or playing media from USB matters, choose the Ultra instead. Roku’s Ultra page showed a related stick at $79.99, temporarily $49.99, when checked; prices and offers can change.
7. onn. 4K Pro Streaming Device: budget candidate
The onn. 4K Pro is worth investigating if price is the priority and it is sold in your market. Before treating it as an Apple TV substitute, check the current Walmart onn. catalog for the exact model and verify its streaming-service certification, HDR formats, remote, software support, and availability. It is a value candidate, not a premium-device equivalent; a larger advertised memory or resolution figure alone does not establish better app support or long-term updates.
8. Xiaomi TV Box S: regional Android TV option
The Xiaomi TV Box S may suit buyers in markets where Xiaomi officially sells and supports it. Consult the official second-generation product page and confirm local warranty, firmware, app certification, and streaming-service compatibility. Availability and support differ by country, so it is not a safe universal recommendation.
Avoid choosing an unofficial or gray-market Android box simply because it advertises high memory or “8K.” Certification, DRM support, legitimate app access, security updates, seller reputation, and warranty matter more to a streaming device’s everyday usefulness.

9. TiVo Stream 4K: historical budget option
TiVo Stream 4K appeared in older alternative lists as an inexpensive streaming device. Its official product page is a starting point, but confirm that the device is currently sold, supported, and compatible with the apps you use before considering it. Without that confirmation, it should not outrank current mainstream devices.
10. Chromecast with Google TV (4K): older Google hardware
The Chromecast with Google TV (4K) remains relevant when reviewing 2022 recommendations, but Google’s current hardware lineup centers on the Google TV Streamer. Google’s comparison information lists the Chromecast at 8 GB storage and 2 GB memory, versus 32 GB and 4 GB for the Streamer. A used or remaining-stock Chromecast may still meet a basic streaming need, but compare its price and support outlook with the newer device rather than treating it as Google’s default current choice. 11. Tablo: best for antenna TV and DVR, not a streaming-box replacement
Tablo belongs on this list only if “alternative” means adding free local broadcast television and recording it. It works with an antenna and is aimed at watching and recording over-the-air channels; it does not replace a general-purpose Apple TV for services such as Netflix or Disney+. Review Tablo’s product catalog for the exact model, feature set, subscription terms, and remote-viewing capabilities. These can vary by generation, and reception depends on the antenna, location, and local broadcasts.
12. Fire TV Recast: legacy, not a current recommendation
Fire TV Recast was an antenna DVR mentioned in older guides, but it should be treated as legacy hardware, not a normal current purchase recommendation. Do not buy a used unit without confirming that the functions you need still work and that official support and service remain available. It was never a general streaming box equivalent to Apple TV.
13. WD TV, ASUS O!Play, MAG 322, SkyStream and generic Android boxes: avoid as default picks
These devices appeared in older lists for local media, IPTV, or inexpensive Android streaming. That does not establish current app certification, security updates, support, warranty, or reliable availability. Unless a specific model has demonstrable current support and legitimate access to the services you use, choose a mainstream supported device instead. Be especially cautious of generic boxes promising every channel or unusually high specifications: those claims do not prove legal service access, DRM compatibility, or safe software.

How to choose: match the device to what you actually use
If you are replacing only the box
Start with Roku Ultra for a simple, well-connected box, or Google TV Streamer if Google’s interface and casting fit your household. Both offer Ethernet; the right pick depends more on ecosystem, interface, and features than on a headline resolution.
If you are keeping an iPhone or iPad
Roku Ultra explicitly lists AirPlay and HomeKit. That can cover wireless sharing and some smart-home use, but it is not the same as Apple TV’s integration with Apple services, profiles, iCloud, Apple Music, or Apple Arcade. Check separately for the apps and functions you rely on.
If you want Plex, local files or gaming
Choose SHIELD TV Pro for USB expansion, Ethernet, local-media flexibility, AI upscaling, and GeForce NOW support. Roku Ultra also offers USB playback, but it is not the same kind of expandable enthusiast platform.

Look at the Fire TV Cube for hands-free control or the 4K Max stick for a compact setup. Confirm the current generation’s features and accept that Amazon content is prominent in the interface.
If you want antenna channels
Consider Tablo with a suitable antenna and verify the exact model’s recording, subscription, and remote-access terms. An antenna DVR supplements streaming; it does not replace the streaming apps and interface of an Apple TV.
What to compare before buying
- Picture: Look beyond “4K.” Check HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG individually, as formats are not interchangeable. Your TV, HDMI input, content, and streaming subscription must also support the format.
- Audio: Dolby Atmos support depends on the specific app, title, device output settings, and compatible soundbar or receiver. A format listed on the box does not guarantee Atmos for every stream.
- Connection: Ethernet can be more useful than a faster processor if Wi-Fi is crowded, the router is distant, or you stream high-bitrate local media. Roku Ultra, Google TV Streamer, and SHIELD TV Pro provide wired networking.
- HDMI and HDCP: Confirm that your TV’s HDMI port supports the requirements for the resolution and HDR you want. Roku notes that 4K requires a compatible HDMI input and HDCP 2.2; Dolby Vision and Atmos also require compatible equipment and content.
- Apps and region: App availability differs by platform and country. Confirm that your must-have services are offered on the precise model in your region; do not assume every Apple TV app exists on every competing platform.
- Remote and household controls: Compare voice control, remote layout, profiles, parental controls, and how easily other household members can find their services.
- Local media and gaming: If you use Plex, USB drives, controllers, or cloud gaming, check those exact workflows. A basic stick and SHIELD Pro address very different needs.
- Updates, accounts and privacy: Check vendor support and update policy, the account needed to set up the device, and whether you are comfortable with its advertising, recommendations, and voice features.
- Accessories: Check whether an HDMI cable, Ethernet cable, storage, antenna, or controller is included or required. Google says the HDMI cable for Google TV Streamer is sold separately.
Why 4K may not play in 4K
A “4K” label describes a device capability, not a guarantee that every video will play at 4K. The television, HDMI port, HDCP version, app, title, subscription tier, network, and region can all affect resolution and HDR. Dolby Vision and HDR10+ are separate formats, so match the device to the TV rather than assuming any HDR device supports both. For network trouble, test Ethernet where available or improve Wi-Fi coverage before paying more for a processor upgrade.
What changed since 2022?
The older article’s list mixed mainstream streamers with antenna DVRs, media players, IPTV hardware, and products whose present availability or support is uncertain. It also made app and performance claims that should not be carried forward without current evidence. Roku’s current app ecosystem should be checked directly rather than relying on old claims that it lacks services such as YouTube or Hulu. Chromecast with Google TV has been superseded in Google’s current hardware lineup by Google TV Streamer, while Fire TV Recast and older WD TV and ASUS O!Play devices are legacy rather than safe default buys.
