The protocol comes first: SFTP runs file operations over SSH, while FTPS is ordinary FTP protected with TLS. They are not interchangeable, and an FTP client cannot make an SFTP-only server work by changing a checkbox. Confirm the server protocol, required authentication, operating system and workflow features before comparing interfaces.
This guide gives detailed, evidence-backed coverage of six clients. A complete, current ranking of twelve could not be verified from the available vendor material, so the remaining six should be checked with their vendors before purchase or deployment.
FTP, FTPS and SFTP: choose the protocol first
SFTP
SFTP is a file-access and transfer protocol carried inside an SSH version 2 connection. It normally uses one encrypted connection and commonly authenticates with an SSH password or key. It is not “FTP with encryption”; select an SFTP connection type in the client.
FTPS
FTPS is FTP secured with TLS. It remains FTP, with FTP’s commands and separate control and data connections. A client generally connects by selecting FTP and then choosing an FTPS invocation method such as explicit or implicit TLS, according to the server’s configuration.

Plain FTP
FTP uses a control connection and a second data connection for directory listings and transfers. Active and passive modes change how that data connection is opened, which matters with firewalls, NAT and tightly restricted networks. Use plain FTP only when the server and network require it; otherwise prefer the secure protocol the server actually supports.

The six documented clients
1. WinSCP — broad Windows administration
WinSCP is a free Windows file manager and client for SFTP, SCP, FTP, WebDAV and S3. It is a strong default when administrators want one familiar two-pane or explorer-style application for server files and object storage. Its breadth also helps when a team operates both SSH servers and legacy FTP or WebDAV endpoints.
Confirm the server’s exact protocol before creating a site. For SFTP, use the SFTP connection type. For FTPS, choose FTP and then the appropriate FTPS invocation method; selecting SFTP for an FTPS endpoint will fail even though both are encrypted.
2. Cyberduck — servers and cloud storage together
Cyberduck’s documented connection choices include FTP, SFTP, WebDAV and multiple cloud-storage protocols. Choose it when the same desktop workflow must reach a conventional server and cloud accounts. Its FTP documentation also calls out active and passive modes: listings and transfers can require a second connection, so passive mode is often easier through NAT and firewalls, while the server’s policy remains decisive.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
3. SmartFTP — queueing, synchronization and remote editing
SmartFTP lists FTP, FTPS, SFTP and WebDAV alongside synchronization, remote editing and transfer queues. Those workflow tools matter when the job is more than copying one file: queues can serialize large batches, synchronization can reconcile local and remote trees, and remote editing can upload a saved file without a manual export step.
Do not assume every cloud connector is included. SmartFTP documents cloud capabilities by edition, so check the edition comparison for the specific provider and workflow before standardizing it.
4. FileZilla Pro — multi-platform and cloud-oriented
FileZilla Pro supports FTP, FTPS, SFTP, WebDAV and cloud services on Windows, macOS and Debian Linux. The vendor also describes a command-line companion, which is relevant for scripted transfers and scheduled jobs. The “Pro” boundary is material: cloud and related capabilities belong to the paid Pro offering, not automatically to the basic client.
For a mixed-OS team, verify that each required cloud service and CLI operation is covered by the edition you will deploy. A graphical connection that works on one workstation does not prove that the same automation path is available on a server.

5. Bitvise SSH Client — integrated SSH operations on Windows
Bitvise SSH Client combines SFTP transfer with an SSH terminal, tunneling and SFTP drive mapping. It fits Windows administrators who already need an interactive shell or port forwarding and want file access in the same SSH session. Drive mapping can make remote files feel like a local volume, but it also requires careful permissions and network-policy review.
6. Transmit 5 — Mac-focused selection
Panic’s Transmit 5 documentation lists FTP, SFTP and WebDAV. It is therefore a candidate for Mac teams that need those protocols in a desktop client. Compare the exact feature needed—such as synchronization, editing or metadata handling—against the protocol in use, because Transmit’s feature support varies by protocol.
How to select a client for your environment
- Write down the endpoint protocol. Record FTP, explicit or implicit FTPS, SFTP or another supported protocol. Ask the server owner if the documentation is ambiguous.
- Match authentication. For SFTP, establish whether the account uses a password, an SSH key, an agent or an enterprise identity layer. For FTPS, record certificate requirements and the expected TLS mode. Never put a private key or password in a shared script or URL.
- Filter by operating system. WinSCP and Bitvise are Windows-oriented; FileZilla Pro documents Windows, macOS and Debian Linux; Transmit is Mac-focused. Confirm current support for your managed edition before rollout.
- List workflow requirements. Mark the features you actually need: cloud storage, synchronization, remote editing, transfer queues, drive mapping, terminal access or command-line automation.
- Check edition boundaries. SmartFTP cloud features vary by edition, and FileZilla Pro is a separate paid product. Price the required edition, not the name of the client alone.
- Test the network path. For FTP or FTPS, test passive and active behavior through the real firewall and NAT path. For SFTP, test SSH reachability, host-key verification and key permissions.
- Document a recovery path. Keep a known-good command-line or alternate client for incident work, and record how to revoke keys, rotate passwords and clear cached credentials.
Authentication and operational safeguards
- Verify the server host key on the first SFTP connection through an independent channel; do not blindly accept a changed key.
- Use least-privilege accounts and separate interactive administration from unattended transfer accounts.
- Protect private keys with a passphrase and an agent where policy permits. Restrict file permissions so other users cannot read them.
- For FTPS, validate the certificate chain and hostname rather than disabling TLS warnings to “make it work.”
- For FTP, understand that credentials and data are exposed unless the server provides TLS; do not treat an obscure port as security.
- For automation, log exit status, transferred paths and server responses, but redact credentials and tokens.
Troubleshooting common failures
“Connection refused” or timeout
Check DNS, the port, VPN and firewall rules first. FTP and FTPS may need a negotiated passive data-port range in addition to the control port. SFTP normally needs SSH access to its configured port.
Login succeeds but directory listing hangs
This is characteristic of an FTP data-channel problem. Switch between passive and active mode only in accordance with the server’s network design, then allow the required passive range through NAT and firewalls.

“Wrong protocol” or handshake error
Recheck the endpoint type. FTPS must be configured as FTP plus the correct TLS invocation; SFTP must be configured as SFTP over SSH. TLS and SSH handshakes are not interchangeable.
SSH key rejected
Confirm that the public key is installed for the intended account, the private-key format is supported, the passphrase is correct and local permissions are restrictive. Also verify that the server permits the key algorithm and that the account is allowed to use SFTP.
Cloud feature or command-line option missing
Check the product edition. SmartFTP documents cloud features by edition, and FileZilla Pro’s cloud and CLI capabilities are tied to its Pro offering.
Files transfer but are incomplete or unexpectedly changed
Compare binary versus text transfer settings for FTP, check available disk space and quotas, and verify whether synchronization rules or remote-editing temporary files are involved. For critical jobs, compare sizes and hashes after transfer.

Scope of this 12-client title
The six products above are the ones for which current protocol, platform and workflow details are documented here. Six additional clients may be suitable, but their current features, editions and availability should be verified directly with their vendors before they are added to a formal twelve-client shortlist. That qualification is preferable to presenting stale protocol or pricing claims as facts.

Can an SFTP client connect to an FTPS server?
Not by selecting SFTP. FTPS uses FTP plus TLS, whereas SFTP uses SSH; configure the client for the protocol the server actually exposes.
Which option is most suitable for a Windows administrator who also needs SSH?
Bitvise SSH Client combines SFTP with an SSH terminal, tunneling and SFTP drive mapping. WinSCP is the broader general-purpose alternative when WebDAV and S3 also matter.
Why can an FTP login work while listing a directory fails?
FTP uses a second data connection. Active/passive mode, NAT and firewall rules can block that channel even when the control connection authenticated successfully.
