There is no single “best” URL scanner. Reputation services compare a link with phishing and malware lists, while browser-like sandboxes open the page and show what it loads. For a suspicious link, use the scanner that matches your question, check the URL’s privacy implications first, and treat a clean result as one signal—not proof that the page is safe.

This guide organizes 12 practical scanning options and modes from the providers’ documented capabilities. It does not claim an independently tested accuracy ranking; no comparable, validated accuracy benchmark is published in the cited material.

Choose the kind of check you actually need

Need Best fit What you learn
Fast answer about a link in a message Bitdefender Link Checker, Google Safe Browsing, Cisco Talos Whether the address matches known reputation or unsafe-resource data
Several engines and blocklists VirusTotal or URLVoid Agreement or disagreement among multiple databases
What the page does when opened urlscan.io or Kaspersky web-address sandbox Redirects, requests, contacted domains, page details and sometimes a screenshot or DOM snapshot
Your own website’s malware and blacklist status Sucuri SiteCheck Known malware, blacklist indicators, errors, outdated software and malicious code visible to a remote scanner

Before submitting a link, ask whether it contains a password-reset token, private invitation, customer identifier, internal hostname or authenticated session. Public or community-oriented services may retain or share submissions.

12 URL-scanning choices and modes

1. VirusTotal URL analysis

VirusTotal’s URL API accepts a URL, starts an analysis and returns an analysis ID. It is useful when you want multiple security engines in one workflow rather than a single vendor’s verdict.

#1 Best Overall
Epson DS-790WN Wireless Network Color Document Scanner
  • Large format scanner - Helps improve access to and management of all your large files
  • Has a color depth of 32-bit

Privacy warning: VirusTotal says submitted or queried indicators are scanned and added to its dataset, where they become accessible to the community. Do not submit confidential, personally identifiable or authenticated URLs unless that exposure is acceptable. A “clean” result only means the engines used did not identify a problem at that time.

2. Google Safe Browsing lookup

Google Safe Browsing checks lists of unsafe web resources, including phishing, social-engineering and malware pages. Its v4 documentation is marked deprecated and says the API is for non-commercial use. Google directs commercial URL-checking customers to Web Risk.

The documentation describes both a straightforward URL lookup and a local-list approach that can avoid sending the full URL on every check. Do not present the deprecated v4 API as an unrestricted commercial service, and do not confuse browser-integrated Safe Browsing protection with a general-purpose public API.

3. urlscan.io automated page inspection

urlscan.io visits a submitted page automatically, like a regular user. Its result can include network activity, contacted domains and IP addresses, requested resources, page information, a screenshot and a DOM snapshot. The service also documents phishing and brand-impersonation verdicts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use it when a blocklist answer is too shallow and you need to see redirects, scripts, trackers or other behavior. Check the submission’s visibility and handling before sending a sensitive URL. urlscan also documents a commercial urlscan Pro platform for threat-hunting teams; that is a business option, not a requirement for a one-off consumer check.

4. URLVoid aggregated reputation

URLVoid says it checks a website against “30+ blocklist engines and online website reputation services” and presents the sources and other website details in a report. That makes it useful for reputation triangulation, not for proving a site is harmless.

URLVoid expressly says submitted data is shared with security companies. Avoid entering private links, one-time tokens or URLs whose disclosure would create risk.

5. Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal lookup

The Kaspersky Threat Intelligence Portal accepts web addresses for indicator lookup. This is the quick-reputation mode: it can tell you whether Kaspersky has relevant intelligence for the address, but it does not recreate every user’s browsing context.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

6. Kaspersky web-address sandbox

Kaspersky’s help documentation describes registered-user web-address analysis that emulates opening a page in an isolated environment and reports activity. Registration is required, and submissions are subject to the portal’s terms and privacy statement.

Choose this mode when you need observed behavior rather than a list lookup. Sandbox results still depend on what the page serves to that isolated visit; targeted or delayed attacks can behave differently.

7. Sucuri SiteCheck for website owners

Sucuri SiteCheck is aimed at remote checks of websites. It looks for known malware, blacklisting, errors, outdated software and malicious code.

Sucuri’s own disclaimer is important: “Remote scanners have limited access and results are not guaranteed.” A clean report does not rule out server-side backdoors, account compromise, hidden files or malware visible only after authentication. Use it as an external health check, then inspect your hosting account, CMS, logs and files when the stakes are high.

8. Bitdefender Link Checker

Bitdefender Link Checker is a free consumer checker for URLs, including shortened URLs that it expands before checking. It covers potential malware, phishing and counterfeit sites.

Bitdefender says no scanner is foolproof. For a shortened link, expansion is particularly helpful because the visible address may hide the final destination; still, do not open the destination merely because the checker returns no warning.

Fujitsu N7100 Network Document and Image Scanner with Large Touch Screen
  • Standalone network scanner with scanning speeds of 25 ppm/50 ipm (A4 portrait, 200/300 dpi), ADF capacity of 50 sheets
  • PC-less scanning with large touch screen and on-screen keyboard
  • Supports scanning from thin paper to thick paper, and plastic cards
  • Security measures include Login Authentication with custom job menus, Encryption, Data Transmission Security, and more
  • USB port to connect devices like a mouse or contactless IC card reader

9. Cisco Talos reputation lookup

The Cisco Talos Intelligence Center accepts URLs and domains as well as IP addresses and file hashes. It is a useful second opinion when another reputation source is silent or contradictory.

Interpret it as Talos intelligence for that indicator, not as a complete behavioral examination of every URL path, redirect or user-specific response.

10. Safe Browsing local-list style checking

Google’s Safe Browsing v4 overview describes a local-list implementation designed to avoid sending the full URL on each check. This mode is relevant to developers who need to reduce URL disclosure while comparing against unsafe-resource data.

It does not remove the API’s lifecycle and licensing constraints: the same documentation marks v4 deprecated and limits the API to non-commercial use. Confirm Google’s current product and terms before building a new integration.

11. urlscan result views for visual and structural evidence

Within urlscan’s documented result, the screenshot and DOM snapshot are separate evidence from the reputation verdict. A screenshot can reveal a fake login page or brand impersonation; the DOM and network records can expose unexpected scripts, redirects and third-party requests.

These views answer “what happened during this visit?” rather than “has this exact URL ever been reported?” A page can look ordinary while serving harmful content only to a particular country, device, referrer or time window.

12. Cross-checking two different methods

For an unknown link, combine one reputation lookup with one behavior-oriented check when the URL’s sensitivity allows it—for example, Bitdefender or Talos plus urlscan, or a Kaspersky lookup plus its sandbox. This is a decision method, not a twelfth vendor and not a mathematical guarantee. Independent signals can reduce blind spots, but they can also share the same underlying intelligence or miss a newly targeted page.

How to check a suspicious link safely

  1. Do not click it first. Copy the address from the message without opening it. On a phone, use the copy-link action; on a desktop, right-click and copy the link address.
  2. Inspect the text. Look for look-alike domains, unusual subdomains, punycode, misspellings, unexpected URL parameters and a shortened destination. HTTPS encrypts transport; it does not establish that the operator is trustworthy.
  3. Check sensitivity. Remove nothing from a password-reset or invitation URL and paste it nowhere public. If the link is private, prefer a tool and account policy that you have confirmed will not expose it.
  4. Start with a reputation lookup. Use Bitdefender, Talos, Google Safe Browsing where its terms fit, or a Kaspersky lookup.
  5. Add behavioral evidence when needed. Use urlscan or the Kaspersky sandbox for redirects, requests, screenshots and page structure. Do not sign in or enter data into the scanned page.
  6. Decide conservatively. If any service flags phishing, malware or impersonation, do not visit it. If results conflict or are empty, verify the sender through a separate channel and navigate to the organization’s known domain manually.

How to check a website you own

  1. Run Sucuri SiteCheck for an external malware, blacklist and error view.
  2. Use a behavior-oriented scan such as urlscan to inspect redirects, loaded resources and unexpected third parties.
  3. Review your CMS, plugins, server files, access logs, administrator accounts and hosting alerts. Remote scanners cannot see everything.
  4. After remediation, rescan and monitor; a single clean report is not a permanent certificate.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a malware-reputation scanner. Use it when you need a reproducible visual capture of a page—for example, to document what a suspicious or impersonating page displays—after your security checks.

It accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Only clean shots are billed: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and response details. A one-call capture looks like this:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo has 63 options, including full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page settings, custom CSS and JavaScript, click-before-capture, hidden selectors, selector/delay/network-idle waits, request and resource blocking, headers, cookies, user agent, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen-TTL caching, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Common screenshot-API parameter names also work for easier migration.

The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots each month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account.

Why a clean scan is not a safety guarantee

  • New threats may be unlisted. A newly created or targeted URL can evade reputation databases.
  • Remote access is incomplete. Sucuri explicitly warns that remote scanners have limited access.
  • Behavior can be conditional. Malware may appear only for a particular location, device, referrer, cookie or time.
  • Different tools see different evidence. A list lookup and a browser-like visit are not interchangeable.
  • Data exposure can be part of the risk. VirusTotal says indicators enter its community dataset, while URLVoid says submissions are shared with security companies.

Troubleshooting common results

“No information” or an empty result

The service may not have seen the URL, may normalize it differently, or may not support the page’s redirect chain. Try the registered domain and the full URL in a second service, without submitting a confidential token.

One scanner flags the link and others do not

Do not average the results. Check which engine or evidence produced the warning, inspect the final destination safely, and verify the sender independently. Treat a phishing or malware flag as sufficient reason not to open the link.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The page requires login or shows a blank screen

A remote scanner may not have your session, may be blocked by bot protection, or may receive different content. Never provide credentials to make an unknown page scanable. For your own site, authenticate only through a controlled test environment and review server-side logs.

A shortened URL expands to a different domain

That is expected behavior for a redirect service, but it is also why the final host matters. Check the expanded destination and every meaningful redirect, not just the shortener domain.

You need a commercial automated integration

Confirm the provider’s current API status and terms. Google’s Safe Browsing v4 documentation is deprecated and reserves that API for non-commercial use; commercial customers should evaluate Web Risk instead. VirusTotal and other services may also impose account, quota and data-handling conditions.

FAQ

Can I check a URL without visiting it?

Yes. Copy the address into a reputation service or sandbox submission page rather than opening the destination. Remember that submitting it may disclose the URL to the provider or its community.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I scan a private password-reset link?

Usually not with a public or community-sharing service. The token can grant access or reveal personal information. Ask the sender for a non-sensitive landing page or use an approved internal process.

Does HTTPS mean the URL is safe?

No. HTTPS protects the connection to the host; phishing and malicious sites can use valid certificates.

The Bottom Line

Use reputation lookups for known threats, sandboxes for observed behavior, and owner-focused scanners for your own site. Check privacy and commercial-use terms before submitting a URL, and never treat a clean result as proof of safety.
