Full YouTube Premium is intended to remove ordinary YouTube ads before and during videos, along with third-party banner and search ads. It does not remove a creator’s recorded sponsorship, every info card, or some promotions in live events and Primetime Channels. First identify what you are seeing; if it is a conventional YouTube ad, check the plan, account and device receiving it before treating it as a platform fault.
Quick check: Visit youtube.com/paid_memberships while signed in. Confirm the plan is full YouTube Premium and active, then test the video in the official YouTube app or directly at youtube.com—not in an Incognito window or embedded player.
1. Identify whether it is a YouTube ad
Premium’s ad-free benefit covers conventional YouTube ad inventory, not every promotional element around a video. YouTube describes the covered benefits and exceptions in its Premium benefits overview.

2. Confirm you have full YouTube Premium
YouTube Music Premium covers listening in YouTube Music; it does not include the full ad-free YouTube video benefit. Premium Lite is also a different plan: YouTube describes it as making most videos ad-free, not as the full Premium benefit set. Check the exact plan name before troubleshooting the device.

- Open YouTube and select your profile picture.
- Open Purchases and memberships, or go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Check whether the plan is YouTube Premium, YouTube Music Premium, or Premium Lite.
For plan descriptions, see YouTube’s membership options and its Premium Lite announcement. If you want conventional ads removed from YouTube videos across the full range of Premium benefits, verify that you have full Premium rather than assuming a music-only or Lite plan is equivalent.
3. Check that the membership is active
At youtube.com/paid_memberships, look for the status, renewal date, and any expired, cancelled, paused, or payment notice. Resolve a failed payment if YouTube shows one. A payment or trial on one Google account does not activate benefits on a different account. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for ads with Premium points subscribers to this membership page.

4. Switch to the Google account that has Premium
Benefits belong to the Google account holding the membership; they do not automatically apply to every account on a device. Select the YouTube profile picture, review the active account, and switch to the account shown with the membership on the Paid Memberships page. Reopen the video and check that YouTube displays Premium branding.
This mismatch is easy to miss when personal, work, school, secondary, or Brand Account profiles are available in the same app or browser.

5. Leave Incognito or private browsing
A private window may not have a signed-in YouTube session, so it cannot reliably apply the Premium account’s benefits. Close the Incognito or private window, open a normal browser window, sign in to the correct Google account, and test the same video directly on YouTube.
6. Test the video in YouTube, not an embed or third-party player
An embedded video on another site or a third-party app’s lightweight browser may not carry the YouTube authentication needed to recognize Premium. Copy the video URL, open the official YouTube app or youtube.com, sign in, and play it there. If the direct version is ad-free but the embed is not, focus on the embedding site, app, or sign-in context rather than the membership itself.

7. Allow YouTube cookies for embedded videos
Blocked YouTube cookies can interfere with Premium recognition in embedded players. YouTube’s troubleshooting page gives Chrome cookie-exception guidance: open Chrome’s cookie settings and add [*.]youtube.com to sites allowed to use cookies. Labels and menus vary by Chrome version; reload the embed after changing the setting. Allowing cookies for YouTube is narrower than disabling browser privacy protections globally.
8. Check the account on your TV, console, or casting setup
A phone with Premium does not mean the YouTube app on the receiving TV or console is signed into that account. On the TV or console, open YouTube’s account selector and confirm the Google account. When casting, check both the casting device and the receiving screen; YouTube also identifies the Google Home account as a possible mismatch.

- Getting set up is easy – Plug in and connect to Wi-Fi for smooth streaming.
- If ads appear only in the TV app, switch the TV app to the membership account.
- If ads appear only while casting, verify the account on both devices and restart the playback after switching.
- In a household, check that the TV has not been left signed into another person’s free account.
9. Temporarily turn off a VPN or proxy
A VPN or proxy can make YouTube interpret your location differently. As a diagnostic, disconnect it, return to your usual network, reload YouTube, and test again. YouTube’s guidance on country verification and availability and travel requires subscribers to represent their country accurately; a VPN is not an ad-removal workaround. Benefits can vary with availability and location while traveling.
10. Update YouTube, restart, and refresh your sign-in
YouTube recommends using the latest app version to access Premium benefits. Update YouTube through the device’s official app store, fully close the app, restart the phone, TV, console, or streaming device, and test again. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that an update will repair an account entitlement.

If the problem remains, sign out of YouTube on the affected device, close and reopen the app or browser, and sign in again with the membership account. Confirm Premium branding before testing. This can refresh recognition after an account switch, app reinstall, device restore, or travel.
11. Report a genuine ad that persists
If an ordinary pre-roll, mid-roll, banner, or homepage ad continues after the plan, account, sign-in, device, and location checks, contact YouTube through the paid-membership support route or submit product feedback. Include details that let support distinguish a service fault from an account or device mismatch.
- Ad type and where it appeared: youtube.com, mobile app, TV, or console.
- Video URL and approximate date and time.
- Device, operating system, and YouTube app or browser version.
- Whether it happens on one video, one device, or everywhere.
- A screenshot or screen recording if appropriate; do not send passwords or payment details.
