These 11 products stood out in 2024 for unusual ideas, from a modular measuring system to a headset-free immersive display. But they were not all established retail gadgets: the list includes products with documented sales, specialist technologies, crowdfunding-era projects and items whose current availability is unclear. Treat it as a discovery guide, not a ranking or a recommendation to buy.
Where a specification comes from a product listing or manufacturer, it is identified as a claim rather than an independently verified result. Prices and availability can change, and several products below need more information before a shopper can confidently assess support, safety or fulfilment.

2. ForeverPen: an inkless pen for a pocket or keychain
ForeverPen was presented as a roughly one-inch keychain writing tool with an inkless tip. The idea is appealing for quick notes without carrying a conventional pen or worrying about a leaking cartridge. Promotional material also described it as waterproof and fire-resistant, but those phrases do not establish how legibly it writes or how it performs in a real emergency.
Best for: someone who wants a tiny backup note-making tool. Limitation: a compact inkless tip may not feel or write like a full-size pen, and its line, pressure requirements and suitability for sustained writing are not independently established here. Treat it as a novelty or backup until ordinary-paper performance is demonstrated. Current purchasing and support details are not verified.

These are listing claims, not independent performance findings.
Best for: someone who has verified that the lock fits their door and wants keyless entry options. Check before buying: door thickness and latch geometry, the mechanical override, what happens when batteries die, whether an account or cloud service is needed, and what safeguards govern voice-assistant unlocking. Confirm the app is still supported and determine how access works during a phone, Bluetooth or internet outage. Current product availability and vendor support are not verified here; do not treat a claimed battery life or water resistance as a substitute for checking the exact model documentation.
5. Aliving Coffee Table: lift-top storage as a furniture upgrade
The Aliving Coffee Table is a lift-top coffee table with storage compartments. The original article described waterproof materials and tool-free assembly in about 25 minutes, but these details are product-description claims. Its innovation is functional furniture design, not an electronic feature.

Futuristic displays and making machines
6. Brelyon Ultra Reality: an immersive display without a headset
Brelyon’s approach is to use optical and computational techniques to create depth and a panoramic impression in a desktop-display form factor. That could appeal to users who want a more immersive visual field without wearing a VR headset. The original roundup cited a 122-inch virtual image, 3840 × 1440 resolution and 450–700 nits of brightness. The “122-inch” figure refers to a perceived virtual image, not a physical panel of that size, and the available evidence does not establish it as a result of independent testing.
Best for: enterprise, visualization or specialist gaming settings where a demonstration can establish whether the effect suits the user. Limitation: the experience may depend on viewing position, content and software, and some users may find optical effects or a limited viewing sweet spot distracting. Brelyon’s company overview describes the technology and emphasizes demonstrations, partners and enterprise uses; it does not establish ordinary mass-market pricing or a standard consumer buying route.

8. Cubiio X: a portable CNC robot

CNC routing can make repeatable cuts and designs, but a material list alone does not tell a buyer what thickness or finish is practical.
Best for: a maker who has a specific small-scale machining task and can confirm that the machine, tooling and software support it. Limitation: real capability depends on spindle power, cutters, workholding, material thickness, dust control and safety enclosure. “Works with metal” should not be read as equal performance across metals or as a promise to machine any stock. 9. Heatou heated vest: warmth with a battery attached
Heatou was described as a windproof, waterproof heated vest with carbon-nanotube heating elements and 3M Thinsulate lining. The original article cited a temperature range of about 113–149°F. That is a claimed heating range, not a measure of body temperature or a guarantee of comfortable warmth in every condition.

Best for: someone who spends time outdoors in cold weather and can check the garment’s heating zones, controls and battery system. Check before buying: runtime at each heat setting, charging method, whether a battery is included, washability, water-resistance rating and the maker’s safety instructions. 10. G-Glove: a work glove with touchscreen ambitions
G-Glove was described as combining artificial leather, aramid fibers and nylon, with touchscreen compatibility and cut- and heat-resistance claims. It may be useful if a glove lets a worker handle a phone without repeatedly removing protective gear—but material names do not prove a glove’s level of protection.
Best for: users who can match a documented glove rating to a specific task. Safety note: avoid relying on phrases such as “cut-proof” or “heat-resistant” without the applicable test standard, rating, temperature limit and use conditions. A glove suitable for one hazard may not protect against another. Current availability and certification details are not established here.

11. Biofire Smart Gun: biometric access on a 9mm handgun
The Biofire Smart Gun is a 9mm semi-automatic handgun designed primarily for home defense. The company says it uses fingerprint and facial-recognition authentication to restrict operation to authorized users. Biofire announced first customer deliveries on August 6, 2024, and at that time listed a total price of $1,499 with a $149 refundable deposit. Those are historical details from the company’s announcement, not a statement of current price or availability. Read the 2024 delivery announcement.
Biofire also says the firearm has no Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS or other wireless connectivity, and that biometric data is stored locally in encrypted form. Those are company statements, not an independent security or reliability audit. A biometric system introduces questions a prospective owner should investigate, including how authentication behaves with different users and conditions, how the device handles a depleted battery, and what the manufacturer’s service and support policies cover.
This is not an ordinary consumer-electronics purchase. Biometric authentication is not a substitute for safe storage, training or established firearm-safety practices. Purchase, transfer and ownership remain subject to applicable federal, state and local law, which varies by location. Anyone considering a firearm should consult the relevant authorities and qualified safety instruction rather than rely on a product roundup.
How to judge a 2024 gadget before paying
- Check what “available” means. A product announcement, crowdfunding campaign, preorder and delivered retail product are different stages. A campaign page does not prove fulfilment or ongoing support.
- Separate a claimed specification from a tested result. Ask what conditions produced a distance, runtime, temperature, accuracy or screen-size figure, and whether a credible independent source verified it.
- Look for the failure plan. For battery-powered devices, locks and heated garments, check what happens when power runs out. For connected products, establish whether core functions survive app, account, network or vendor-service failure.
- Verify safety evidence. For protective gear, ask for the precise applicable standard and rating. For tools, understand enclosure, eye protection, ventilation and operating limits. For firearms, consider the legal and safety obligations separately from product novelty.
- Check the total cost and the simpler alternative. A modular tool system can be useful, but a tape measure or standalone laser may be enough. An immersive display may be impressive, but a regular monitor may better suit everyday work.
- Confirm after-sales basics. Look for a real support channel, warranty terms, return policy, replacement parts and continued app availability before buying an unfamiliar product.
The strongest practical case in this group is the HOZO M-Cube for people who will use several measurement functions. Brelyon and Alight Cube are most compelling as demonstrations of new display ideas, while the workstation bag, pen, glove, vest and table need more product-specific buying evidence than the roundup establishes. Biofire is a specialized, safety-sensitive firearm technology and should be evaluated on its own legal, reliability and safe-storage requirements—not as a novelty gadget.
