NordVPN is the strongest default choice in the available recent Netflix comparisons; Surfshark is the value pick. But “works with Netflix” is not a permanent guarantee: Netflix can detect VPN connections, and results depend on the server, country, device, plan and date. No VPN can promise uninterrupted access to every regional catalog.
This guide reflects comparison coverage and provider documentation available through August 16, 2026. It is not a fresh, hands-on test of every service listed. Treat the rankings as a shortlist to investigate, not proof that every server will work for your account today.

Netflix loading is only the first hurdle. A meaningful result means the service can sign in, show the intended catalog, start a title and sustain playback—not merely display thumbnails. It should also work on the device you actually use. Access can change when Netflix blocks an IP range or a VPN assigns new addresses.

Netflix says that when it detects a VPN, viewers may see only titles for which Netflix has worldwide rights rather than the full catalog for their apparent location. The company says VPNs are not supported on ad-supported experiences or for Netflix live events. See Netflix’s VPN and proxy guidance and its ad-supported plan help page.
There are two different use cases. If you are traveling, you may want to watch Netflix away from home; what is available can still be limited by the connection and Netflix’s location handling. If you are trying to view another country’s catalog, success is more fragile: Netflix may identify the VPN server and restrict what appears. Neither use case guarantees access to a particular title or complete regional library.
The 10 VPNs, in detail
1. NordVPN — best overall
NordVPN is the best default starting point in the available comparison evidence. Recent coverage from TechRadar and Tom’s Guide ranks it among the leading Netflix choices, citing reliable access and streaming performance. That makes it the strongest all-round candidate—not a guarantee that every server or library will work.

Choose it if you want a mainstream paid service with a strong streaming track record in comparison coverage. Before subscribing, confirm current plan pricing, renewal terms and that your particular TV or streaming device has a practical setup path. Check NordVPN plans.
2. Surfshark — best value and many devices
Surfshark is a compelling alternative if price and covering several household devices matter. Recent coverage reports strong streaming results and highlights unlimited simultaneous connections. That can be useful for a household, but check the provider’s current account terms rather than assuming unlimited connections means unlimited users under every circumstance.
Long-term promotions can make its monthly equivalent look especially low. Compare the full upfront payment and renewal price on the official pricing page. Choose it if the current offer suits your budget and it supports the devices you plan to use.

3. ExpressVPN — easiest for beginners
ExpressVPN is a good candidate if you value simple apps and broad device support. Recent comparison coverage reports Netflix access, but also notes occasional inconsistency between regional libraries. It is therefore an ease-of-use pick, not a more certain universal unblocking choice than NordVPN.

4. Proton VPN Plus — best privacy-oriented option
Proton VPN is the clearest choice here for readers who want a privacy-oriented provider with explicit Netflix support documentation. Proton says Netflix streaming requires a paid plan such as VPN Plus, Unlimited, Duo or Family, and recommends using a Plus server in the selected country. Privacy and streaming reliability are separate criteria: privacy features do not prevent Netflix from identifying a VPN connection.

5. Private Internet Access — budget/privacy alternative
PIA is worth considering if its price and privacy features appeal to you, but set expectations: available comparison coverage suggests streaming performance can be variable. PIA itself acknowledges that access to some streaming services can be difficult over VPN connections in its streaming guidance.
PIA’s split-tunneling feature can help isolate whether Netflix traffic is going through the VPN, but it is a troubleshooting tool, not a way to improve regional access automatically. 6. CyberGhost — useful streaming-server labels
CyberGhost labels streaming-oriented locations, which may make server selection easier for less technical users. That convenience does not prove that a particular server still works: recent third-party results are mixed, and streaming IP addresses can be blocked. Consider it if you like guided server selection, but verify your target catalog and device.

7. PureVPN — a candidate to verify
PureVPN is a reasonable additional service to investigate, but the available Netflix evidence is more limited than for the first five picks. Treat provider streaming claims as a starting point, not proof. Check the exact region you need, the devices supported by your plan and current refund conditions before committing.

8. PrivadoVPN — possible low-cost or free option
Some recent coverage identifies PrivadoVPN as a possible free option for US and UK Netflix. “Possible” matters: free availability may depend on data caps, server selection, speed and whether the relevant location is currently offered. It is better suited to an occasional trial than to a household expecting reliable, unlimited streaming across many countries.

9. Windscribe — flexible for occasional use
Windscribe is worth a look if you want a flexible service for occasional VPN use, including a free tier. The current evidence does not make it a leading choice for predictable daily access to multiple Netflix regions. Check the free plan’s current data and location limits, and do not assume that connecting to a country server means Netflix will show that country’s full catalog.

10. UltraVPN — a less-established Netflix pick
UltraVPN appears in some Netflix VPN recommendations, including Security.org’s comparison, but the evidence available here is thinner than for the leading services. Treat it as an alternative to investigate, not a proven choice for every region. Test your own device and target country before depending on it.

How to choose the right one
- Prioritize the odds of access: Start with NordVPN; Surfshark is another strong candidate.
- Want a lower-cost household option: Compare Surfshark’s full billing total and device terms with other offers.
- Want the simplest setup: Consider ExpressVPN, while allowing for occasional regional inconsistency.
- Put privacy first as well as streaming: Consider Proton VPN Plus, but remember the paid-plan requirement.
- Need one particular country: Verify that country and your actual playback device; general provider rankings are not enough.
- Considering free service: Expect more constraints and less reliability. Avoid unknown free VPNs or browser proxies with unclear privacy practices.
For any provider, examine the privacy policy and independent audit information, app security, kill switch and DNS leak protections separately from Netflix access. A no-logs claim does not mean anonymity, nor does it make a VPN harder for Netflix to detect. Also compare the actual number of simultaneous connections, compatible TV options, refund window and renewal price.
Set up a VPN on a phone, tablet or computer
- Choose a provider and subscribe through its official site; read the renewal and refund terms.
- Install the official app for your operating system and sign in.
- Choose a server in the country you want to try and connect.
- Close and reopen Netflix. If needed, sign out and back in so the app refreshes.
- Search for a title expected in that catalog, then confirm that it actually plays.
App labels vary by provider and version. Avoid downloading VPN apps from unofficial sources. If your main use is a TV, console or streaming stick, check compatibility before subscribing rather than assuming the desktop app will work on it.
Smart TVs, streaming boxes, consoles and routers
Many smart TVs, Roku devices and game consoles do not support ordinary VPN apps directly. Depending on the device and provider, options may include a native VPN app on a compatible Android/Google TV or Fire TV device, installing the VPN on a compatible router, sharing a VPN connection from a computer, or using a provider’s Smart DNS feature. Casting or mirroring from a VPN-connected phone may also work in some setups, but app and device restrictions can interfere.
Smart DNS is not the same as a VPN. It can redirect selected DNS requests without encrypting all device traffic through a VPN tunnel, so it does not provide equivalent network-wide privacy. It may also be blocked by Netflix. Router setup is an advanced option: compatibility and throughput vary, it affects devices on that network, and troubleshooting is harder than switching a VPN on one phone.
Fix Netflix VPN and proxy errors
“You seem to be using a VPN or proxy”
Netflix’s official guidance recommends turning off the VPN and checking the detected location. On a device using the same network, open Fast.com, wait for the test to finish, choose Show more info, and check the country shown beside Client. If it does not match your physical location after the VPN is off, another VPN or proxy may still be active. If it matches and the error persists, Netflix advises resetting network settings or contacting your internet provider. Netflix also documents proxy error M7037-1111.

If a paid VPN server is blocked
- Disconnect and reconnect the VPN.
- Try another server in the same country, then a different city.
- If the app offers a recommended or streaming-optimized server, try it.
- Restart Netflix; sign out and back in if the catalog remains stale.
- Clear browser cookies and cache, or test another browser.
- Check that split tunneling is not excluding Netflix and disable any second VPN, proxy, custom DNS or router-level Smart DNS during troubleshooting.
- If available, try another VPN protocol and ask provider support which server currently supports Netflix in your target country.
Proton’s support guide also recommends changing servers, restarting the app or device, trying another browser and clearing DNS cache. If Netflix shows the wrong country, possible causes include cached app data, stale cookies, DNS or IPv6 leakage, split tunneling, another network-level proxy, or a server whose location Netflix has mapped incorrectly. Netflix also has a wrong-region and title-availability help page.
If playback works but buffers
First check your normal internet speed and Wi-Fi signal. A distant or congested VPN server, router limitations, protocol choice and device performance can all affect playback. 4K also requires a compatible device and Netflix plan. Buffering is not automatically a VPN problem; Netflix’s playback troubleshooting covers device, network and connection causes.
Why VPN Netflix claims are hard to compare
A provider may have many servers or a “streaming” label without access to a particular catalog. Results depend on the country, server IP, device, account plan and date. A single successful connection is not evidence of repeatable access. A rigorous comparison should record test date, physical location, device and OS, Netflix plan, app or browser, VPN app and protocol, server city, and whether the server was manually selected.

Netflix’s cited guidance describes restricting titles or showing a VPN/proxy error; it does not say VPN use automatically bans an account. Follow Netflix’s current terms and help guidance, since policies can change.
Can I watch my home Netflix library while traveling?
Possibly, but travel does not guarantee that the same catalog or every title will be available. Netflix may limit titles when it detects a VPN, and availability also depends on your connection and account.
Can I use one VPN account for my household?
