Start by finding what is actually slowing the computer: a crowded startup, a program using too much memory or CPU, a nearly full drive, malware, or aging hardware. The steps below begin with quick, low-risk checks and move toward upgrades only if software changes do not help.
Support matters, too: Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 are also legacy systems. These fixes may improve responsiveness, but they do not make an unsupported Windows version secure. For Windows 10, consider moving to Windows 11 if the PC qualifies, checking whether an applicable Extended Security Updates option is available, or replacing the computer.
First, identify what feels slow
A slow PC can mean several different things. Slow startup often points to startup apps or storage; sluggishness after login may come from background programs, updates, or a scan. Slow browsing may be caused by too many tabs, browser extensions, low memory, or the internet connection itself. If local apps and file browsing work normally but websites load slowly, troubleshoot the network rather than Windows.

For a quick check, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. If needed, choose More details, then inspect Processes and Performance. Sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk and look for usage that stays high for several minutes; a brief spike is normal. High CPU can indicate an app, update, or scan. Memory near full can cause slowdowns when many apps are open. Sustained disk activity may come from updates, antivirus scanning, low RAM and paging, a mechanical hard drive, or a drive problem. Don’t end a process just because its name is unfamiliar: check its publisher or location first, and avoid stopping Windows system processes.

1. Restart and close what you are not using
Save your work, close demanding applications and extra browser tabs, then select Start > Power > Restart. A restart can clear temporary software states and complete pending updates. It is a useful first test, not a lasting cure for recurring slowdowns.
If the PC is slow immediately after every boot, check startup apps next. If it slows only after hours of use, look for a process consuming memory, overheating, or a recurring background task.
2. Find and address the resource-heavy app
In Task Manager, sort the Processes list by CPU, Memory, then Disk. If a recognized application remains near the top and you do not need it, save your work and close it normally. If it is unresponsive, right-click it and choose End task only when you understand what it is and have accounted for unsaved work.
Repeated high usage is more useful evidence than a momentary spike. A browser tab, software update, antivirus scan, or stuck app can temporarily use substantial resources. If usage is low but the PC remains sluggish, consider drive health, heat, drivers, or hardware limits instead.

3. Disable unnecessary startup apps
Programs that launch at sign-in can lengthen startup and keep using resources in the background. Disable only items you recognize and do not need immediately.
- Windows 10: Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select Startup apps, right-click a nonessential app, and choose Disable.
- Windows 8/8.1: Task Manager includes a Startup tab. Select an understood, nonessential item and disable it.
- Windows 7: Press Windows key + R, enter
msconfig, open the Startup tab, and clear only programs you understand and do not need. Select Apply and restart.
Chat clients, game launchers, and promotional utilities are often reasonable candidates if you do not need them at sign-in. Do not casually disable antivirus, backup software you rely on, accessibility tools, or touchpad, graphics, audio, keyboard, or other hardware utilities. If the PC behaves worse afterward, return to the same screen and re-enable the item.
4. Uninstall apps you no longer use
- Windows 10: Go to Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select an app, then choose Uninstall.
- Windows 7 and 8/8.1: Open Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, select the program, and choose Uninstall.
Removing unused software can free storage and stop background activity, though it will not speed up a weak processor by itself. Do not remove drivers, Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables, or components whose purpose you do not understand. If you suspect malware, scan the PC rather than relying on an uninstall alone.

- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > System > Storage. Review Temporary files or Cleanup recommendations, select only items you want removed, and confirm. You can enable Storage Sense for automatic cleanup.
- Windows 7 and 8/8.1: Search the Start screen or menu for Disk Cleanup, choose the system drive, review the categories, and select Clean up system files if you need its additional options. You can also run
cleanmgrfrom the Run box.
Temporary files, thumbnails, and Recycle Bin contents may be safe to remove after review. Treat Downloads carefully because it may contain personal files and installers. Removing Previous Windows installation(s) or Windows.old can remove the option to roll back to the earlier installation. Move personal photos or videos to storage you trust instead of deleting them just to free space. There is no single free-space percentage that guarantees better performance on every PC.
6. Scan for malware
Unexpected pop-ups or redirects, unfamiliar startup items, unusually high resource use, or antivirus settings that have changed without your permission can justify a security scan.
- Windows 10: Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Security > Virus & threat protection, then choose Quick scan. If symptoms continue, use a deeper scan option.
- Windows 7 and 8/8.1: The current Windows Security interface may not be available. Use the reputable antivirus product already installed, and get definition updates only from its official vendor.
A clean scan does not prove that the hardware is healthy. If ransomware or account compromise is suspected, disconnect the PC from the network and prioritize safe data recovery. Change passwords from a separate, trusted device; back up only files you know are clean.
7. Install appropriate updates—and address Windows support
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, although installing them may temporarily increase CPU or disk activity. On Windows 10, go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > Check for updates. Optional drivers may be listed under View optional updates; install them selectively rather than treating every optional driver as necessary. Menu availability and update delivery vary on older releases.

Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025. It still runs, but normal security updates, feature updates, and technical support have ended. Microsoft says eligible consumer devices may receive protection through its Extended Security Updates program through October 12, 2027. Check the current eligibility and enrollment details before relying on it. Consider upgrading to Windows 11 if the hardware qualifies, using an applicable ESU option, or replacing the PC. Windows 7 and Windows 8/8.1 should likewise be treated as legacy operating systems, not secure long-term choices.
8. Reduce visual effects if the PC is low-powered
Search Start for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and open the result. On the Visual Effects tab, choose Adjust for best performance, or select Custom and keep the effects you value, such as smoother fonts or thumbnail previews. The setting is available across the Windows versions covered, though labels can vary.
This can reduce visual overhead on low-memory or low-power hardware, but it also removes effects such as animations and shadows and can make Windows look plainer. It will not fix a failing drive, malware, or an inadequate CPU.

9. Let Windows optimize the drive appropriately
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives, select the drive, and follow the tool’s recommendation. On a mechanical hard disk (HDD), Windows can defragment files. On a solid-state drive (SSD), Windows uses a different optimization process, including TRIM; do not repeatedly run third-party defragmentation tools on an SSD. Windows generally manages drive optimization automatically, so this is not a routine fix to repeat.

If disk usage stays near 100%, the cause may instead be an update, scan, low memory, malware, file-system issue, or failing storage. Back up important files before intensive diagnostics if you suspect a failing drive—especially if the PC freezes, files are corrupted, or a hard drive makes unusual noises. Repeated defragmentation will not repair failing hardware.
10. Test the same task, then decide whether hardware is the limit
After a change, restart if needed and repeat the activity that first felt slow: startup, opening a program, browsing, or accessing files. If the same task improves, keep the change. If not, avoid piling on random “tweaks”; return to Task Manager and look for a persistent resource bottleneck.
On an otherwise functional older PC that still boots from an HDD, replacing it with a compatible SSD is often the most noticeable practical upgrade for startup and application loading. It is not a cure for every slowdown. Check whether the computer supports a 2.5-inch SATA or an NVMe drive before buying; an M.2 drive is not automatically compatible with every M.2 slot. Back up first and check migration or installation requirements.

Verify the RAM type, maximum capacity, available slots, and whether memory is soldered before buying. If performance problems come with overheating, repeated freezes, or drive errors, repair may matter more than an upgrade. If the hardware cannot run a supported Windows version or several key components are failing, replacement may be a better security and reliability decision than further tuning.
What not to do
- Skip registry cleaners and “RAM optimizer” utilities. They are unnecessary for these fixes and can add risk or another background process.
- Do not disable Windows services indiscriminately. This can interfere with networking, printing, security, updates, or accessibility.
- Do not delete everything in Downloads or remove rollback files blindly. Review personal files and recovery consequences first.
- Do not treat a clean malware scan as a hardware diagnosis. Software and hardware problems can coexist.
If a startup change makes the system worse, re-enable the item in Task Manager or msconfig and restart. If Windows cannot start normally, use its recovery options or Safe Mode to isolate the problem. If Windows will not update, check available storage and review cleanup options before attempting more disruptive repairs. Back up important data before disk repair work, especially when drive failure is possible.
Quick Recap
Recommended order for a 30–60 minute tune-up
- Restart and close unused apps.
- Check Task Manager for sustained CPU, Memory, or Disk pressure.
- Disable only understood, unnecessary startup items.
- Uninstall software you no longer need and review storage cleanup.
- Run a malware scan.
- Check applicable updates and the PC’s Windows support status.
- Use Windows’ drive optimization according to whether the drive is an HDD or SSD.
- Retest. If the same bottleneck persists, investigate hardware rather than reaching for riskier tweaks.
