These ten mostly built-in Visual Studio Code features solve everyday problems faster than hunting through menus or installing another extension. The shortcuts below show Windows/Linux and macOS separately; if one is missing or conflicts with your system, search the command in Keyboard Shortcuts (Ctrl+K Ctrl+S / ⌘K ⌘S).
Examples use current VS Code command names and documentation. Language services, profiles, remote windows and operating-system shortcuts can change what is available.
1. Make the Command Palette your control panel
Use it when: you know what you want VS Code to do, but not where the setting or menu item lives.
- Windows/Linux:
Ctrl+Shift+PorF1 - macOS:
Shift+⌘P
Type commands such as Format Document, Preferences: Open Settings, Developer: Reload Window, Tasks: Run Task or File: Compare Active File with Clipboard. The list is context-sensitive, so language, debugger and workspace features appear only when applicable. You can also drag the palette’s top edge or use title-bar layout controls to reposition it.
Watch out: If a command is absent, install or enable the relevant language extension, debugger or task, or open the correct workspace. See the official Command Palette guide.
2. Use Quick Open for files, symbols and exact lines
Use it when: the Explorer is too slow for a large project.
- Windows/Linux:
Ctrl+P - macOS:
⌘P
Type part of a filename or path. Quick Open also accepts prefixes: ? lists commands, edt searches editors, term searches terminals, @ shows symbols in the current file, # searches workspace symbols and : jumps to a line (for example, :120).
Example: press Ctrl/⌘P, type api, then add :120 to open the matching file at line 120. Symbol results depend on the language server indexing that file. Details are in Quick Open documentation.
3. Edit every matching occurrence with multiple cursors
Use it when: the same key, class name or text appears on several lines.
Alt+Click(Windows/Linux) orOption+Click(macOS) adds a cursor.Ctrl+Alt+Up/DownorOption+⌘+Up/Downadds cursors above or below.Ctrl+Shift+LorShift+⌘Lselects every occurrence of the current selection.Ctrl+Dor⌘Dselects the next occurrence one at a time.
Type once and all selections change together. This is ideal for renaming repeated JSON keys or adding a prefix to a list.

Watch out: This is text selection, not semantic refactoring. Use a language-aware Rename Symbol command for safe identifier changes. If a shortcut is intercepted by a graphics driver or desktop environment, use mouse cursors or change editor.multiCursorModifier. See multi-cursor documentation.
4. Use column selection for rectangular changes
Use it when: you need to edit the same character position across aligned lines.
- Windows/Linux: hold
Shift+Altwhile dragging. - macOS: hold
Shift+Optionwhile dragging.
You get a cursor on each selected row, making it easy to add a prefix, remove an aligned column or fix a plain-text table. Search the Command Palette for column-selection commands if the mouse gesture is unavailable.
Trade-off: the selection is positional, not semantic. Uneven indentation or line lengths can produce surprising edits, so review the whole block and undo immediately if needed. See column selection tips.
5. Split or float editors for side-by-side work
Use it when: you are comparing a test with implementation, or working across monitors.

Ctrl+1,Ctrl+2(Windows/Linux) or⌘1,⌘2(macOS).
Drag a tab to another group, or outside the main window to create a floating editor. The tab menu also offers Move into New Window and Copy into New Window. Floating editors remain part of the same VS Code session, not a separate installation. The floating-window guide covers terminals and views too.

6. Turn boilerplate into a custom snippet
Use it when: you repeatedly type log statements, test blocks, components or documentation comments.
- Open Snippets: Configure Snippets from the Command Palette and choose a language or global file.
- Add a prefix and a body with tab stops:

}Type clog, trigger suggestions with Ctrl+Space (Windows/Linux) or Control+Space (macOS), and press Tab to move through placeholders. Set "editor.tabCompletion": "on" for prefix-based Tab completion.
Watch out: A snippet has a language scope; a JavaScript snippet will not automatically appear in TypeScript or Markdown. Snippets insert templates and do not replace semantic rename or refactoring. Read the snippet syntax reference.
7. Keep different jobs in separate Profiles
Use it when: one installation has become crowded with unrelated extensions and settings.
- Run Profiles: Create Profile or open the Profiles editor.
- Start empty, from an existing profile or from a template.
- Choose which settings, extensions, snippets, tasks and keybindings belong in it.
- Switch with Profiles: Switch Profile, or use File > New Window with Profile.
Useful profiles include Web, Python/data, Documentation and Minimal troubleshooting. Profiles are user-level configuration; workspace settings and project files can still override them. If a project suddenly loses IntelliSense or debugging, switch to Default Profile or install the required extension in the active one. Profiles can be exported locally or to a GitHub gist, so inspect files for secrets before sharing. See Profiles documentation.
8. Sync your setup without mistaking it for a backup
Use it when: you move to a new machine or want consistent keybindings.
- Open the Accounts menu or Manage gear.
- Choose Backup and Sync Settings and sign in with Microsoft or GitHub.
- Select categories such as settings, keyboard shortcuts, snippets, tasks, UI state, extensions and profiles.
When configurations differ, VS Code offers merge, replace-local or manual-merge choices. Use Settings Sync: Show Synced Data to diagnose unexpected changes.

Use it when: you repeatedly run the same test, build or lint command.
Run Tasks: Configure Task or create .vscode/tasks.json:

}Watch out: shell syntax, executable paths, working directories and environment variables differ across Windows, macOS and Linux. Keep machine-specific paths and credentials out of a task file that may be committed. See the task shortcut guide.
10. Diff a file against clipboard text
Use it when: you need to compare an API response, generated file or pasted configuration without first saving a temporary file.
- Copy the reference text.
- Open the file to inspect.
- Run File: Compare Active File with Clipboard from the Command Palette.
VS Code opens a normal diff view. The official tips page lists ⌘K C for macOS; on Windows/Linux, search for the command in Keyboard Shortcuts because bindings can vary. If another application overwrites the clipboard, save important reference text first. See clipboard comparison documentation.
Know which configuration layer changed your behavior
When a setting seems mysterious, check these layers in order:
- User settings: apply broadly to your installation.
- Workspace settings: apply to the opened project, commonly in
.vscode/settings.json. - Profile settings: select a user configuration set, including extensions and shortcuts.
- Workspace tasks and debugging:
.vscode/tasks.jsonand.vscode/launch.json. - Language-specific and extension settings: apply only when that language or extension is active.
Open Settings with Ctrl+, / ⌘, and use its scope indicator to see where a value comes from. For definitive shortcuts, use Keyboard Shortcuts; system software may capture a documented combination.
A practical order to learn them
Start with Command Palette and Quick Open. Add multi-cursor and snippets for repetitive editing, then split editors for comparison. Once your workflow is stable, create a profile, enable Sync and convert recurring terminal commands into tasks. Clipboard diff is the quick recovery tool when a saved temporary file would only create clutter.
All ten features are available in VS Code without a paid license. Optional AI tools such as GitHub Copilot are separate from these built-in workflows; check current plans and privacy requirements before enabling them.
