Porkbun is the best all-around fit for many individuals and small businesses; Cloudflare Registrar is the stronger choice for technical users who want at-cost pricing and already use Cloudflare DNS; and Dynadot is better suited to domain portfolios and investors. The right registrar depends on more than a first-year deal: compare the renewal price for your exact domain ending, privacy terms, security controls, DNS flexibility, and the cost of any email or recovery services. This comparison reflects available information through August 2026; prices and features can change.

Quick comparison: which registrar fits your needs?

Registrar Best fit What stands out What to check
Porkbun Most individuals and small businesses Free WHOIS privacy is listed alongside forwarding, SSL-related features, and marketplace tools. Check the renewal price for your TLD; a displayed “from” price is not a universal renewal quote.
Cloudflare Registrar Developers and technical users Cloudflare says it charges registry and ICANN costs without markup and integrates registrar services with DNS, CDN, SSL, and DNSSEC. Confirm nameserver requirements and whether Cloudflare’s DNS setup suits your needs.
Dynadot Domain investors and portfolios Bulk search, API, auctions, appraisal, marketplace, and privacy features. Compare the registration, renewal, transfer, and premium price for each extension.
Namecheap Beginners and general-purpose buyers Broad domain-related product range, including hosting, email, and SSL. Review renewal pricing and checkout add-ons rather than judging by the introductory offer.
Squarespace Domains Squarespace customers and former Google Domains users Supports domain registration without a Squarespace site and linking to external hosts, email providers, or applications. Compare renewals before placing multiple domains in a portfolio.
Hover Buyers seeking a simple domain-and-email experience Focused domain and email offering with renewal reminders. Check exact TLD pricing; it may not be the lowest-cost choice for a large portfolio.
NameSilo Multi-domain owners DNS management, forwarding, marketplace features, and a discount-program pitch. Its public page uses inconsistent wording about privacy; verify what the checkout includes.
Spaceship Bargain hunters exploring TLDs Domain search focused on discovering a broad range of extensions. Verify renewal, transfer, privacy, and support terms for the exact TLD.
GoDaddy Buyers who want business services and phone support Domains alongside hosting, website, email, and other business services; its domain page lists security features. Separate promotional pricing from renewal and bundle costs.
IONOS Buyers who want a domain with hosting and email Integrated domains, hosting, email, and business services. Check renewal, contract duration, add-ons, and cancellation terms.

These are editorial use-case recommendations, not a market-share ranking or a hands-on performance test. Public feature claims are attributed to the providers; check the linked pages and checkout terms before buying.

What a registrar does—and what it does not do

A registry operates an extension such as .com. A registrar sells registrations and provides the account tools to manage them. The registrant is the person or organization holding the registration. Separately, a DNS provider hosts the records that direct a domain to a website, email service, or application; a web host or website builder supplies the site infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those roles can belong to different companies. Registering a domain with one provider does not mean you must host your site or email there. Squarespace, for example, says customers can register without a Squarespace website and link a domain to external hosts, email providers, or applications. Cloudflare bundles registrar capabilities closely with its DNS, CDN, SSL, and security services, which can be valuable for existing Cloudflare users but is not the same thing as a domain-only account. See Squarespace Domains and Cloudflare Registrar.

How to compare the real cost

There is no reliable single “.com price” for every buyer: prices vary by extension, market, promotion, and whether a name is classified as premium. Compare the same TLD at each registrar and separate the first-year offer from the standard price you will pay later. A third-party comparison dated April 21, 2026 covers Cloudflare, Porkbun, Namecheap, Squarespace Domains, and GoDaddy, but treat it as a dated snapshot rather than a standing quote: April 2026 registrar pricing comparison.

Price signal What the available source says How to interpret it
Porkbun .com Porkbun’s public page displayed prices “from $11.08” when accessed during the August 2026 research period. Porkbun domain page. “From” is not a guaranteed price for every customer or a confirmed renewal quote. Check the cart and renewal terms.
GoDaddy .com GoDaddy’s public page displayed $4.99 for the first year for new customers, subject to validation at checkout. GoDaddy domains. This is a promotional first-year price, not a standard renewal price.
Dynadot examples Dynadot’s page showed .co at $3.48 first year / $15.50 regular, .xyz at $1.99 / $13.17, and .io at $28.89 / $53.50. Dynadot domain search. These extension-specific examples illustrate why a cheap first year can lead to a higher regular price. Confirm current prices for the name you want.
Cloudflare Cloudflare describes its model as charging registry and ICANN costs without markup. Cloudflare Registrar. It does not establish one flat price for every TLD; check the price for your extension and market.

Build your own total using the same period for each provider:

Total cost = registration + renewals for the remaining years + privacy or email charges + applicable taxes + any premium, redemption, or restoration fees.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a three-year comparison, include one initial registration and two renewals; for five years, include one registration and four renewals. Add the same optional services you actually need, such as a mailbox, and do not assume a transfer price is the same as a new registration or renewal. A premium domain can have separate premium registration, renewal, transfer, or recovery pricing. The public evidence here does not establish comparable standard .com renewal, transfer, email, tax, and recovery prices for all ten providers, so check each item in the provider’s current cart or terms rather than treating missing figures as equal.

  • Check whether a discount requires new-customer status, a coupon, multiple years, a bundle, or a particular payment method.
  • Look for the standard renewal amount and when it applies.
  • Confirm whether privacy is included for your TLD and registration type.
  • Price email forwarding separately from a full mailbox.
  • For an expired name, check redemption or restoration fees before assuming the normal renewal price applies.

Privacy, DNS, and security: the differences that matter

Registration privacy is not anonymity

WHOIS privacy or registration-data redaction can limit what is publicly displayed, but it does not guarantee total anonymity. Data may still be disclosed under applicable policy or legal processes, and privacy availability can depend on the TLD, jurisdiction, and whether the registrant is a person or a business. Proxy email addresses can also affect how abuse reports and account-recovery messages reach you.

Cloudflare says WHOIS redaction is free; Porkbun lists free WHOIS privacy; and Dynadot advertises free privacy. NameSilo’s public page has conflicting privacy wording, so verify the exact item shown at checkout. These are provider statements, not a guarantee that privacy works identically for every extension. See Cloudflare, Porkbun, Dynadot, and NameSilo.

DNS flexibility is separate from registration

Before buying, check whether you can point the domain to custom nameservers or use a third-party DNS provider such as your host or another DNS service. For technical or business use, review support for records such as A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, TXT, SRV, and CAA; DNSSEC; templates; bulk changes; API access; and forwarding. The supplied provider pages do not establish a complete feature-by-feature DNS matrix for all ten registrars, so do not infer that an unlisted feature is absent—or included.

Cloudflare’s integrated DNS, CDN, SSL, and DNSSEC are a coherent advantage if you want those services together. Its registrar page also makes Cloudflare’s DNS-centric model central to the offering; confirm the current nameserver requirements if you intend to host DNS elsewhere. Read Cloudflare’s registrar details before transferring a domain into that setup.

Protect the account that controls the domain

A low annual fee matters less than account recovery if a domain supports your business, identity, or email. Compare available two-factor authentication, passkeys or security keys, registrar and registry locks, change alerts, activity logs, role-based access, API-token controls, and escalation procedures. Feature claims do not guarantee an account cannot be compromised; security also depends on your own email and account practices.

Cloudflare describes DNSSEC, registry locks, offline confirmation, and out-of-band authentication for higher-protection use cases. GoDaddy lists transfer lock, two-factor authentication, DNSSEC, monitoring, and domain-security features. Check the exact plan and eligibility before relying on a control: Cloudflare Registrar and GoDaddy domains.

The 10 registrars, in detail

1. Porkbun — best overall for many independent buyers

Porkbun is the most balanced starting point for an individual or small business that wants a conventional registrar rather than a tightly coupled hosting bundle. Its product page lists free WHOIS privacy, SSL-related features, URL forwarding, email-forwarding options, and marketplace tools. Its public page displayed .com pricing from $11.08 during the August 2026 research period, but that “from” figure is not a universal renewal quote. Check Porkbun’s domain page and verify the actual registration and renewal amounts for your TLD.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when you value a straightforward package of domain-management extras. Compare elsewhere if you are managing a large enterprise portfolio that needs governance features not established by the available information, or if a niche TLD’s regular price is much higher than its promotion.

2. Cloudflare Registrar — best for technical users and at-cost pricing

Cloudflare says its registrar charges registry and ICANN costs without markup, and advertises support for more than 390 TLDs. It combines registration with Cloudflare DNS, CDN, SSL, DNSSEC, and free WHOIS redaction. That makes it a strong choice for a developer or team already comfortable with Cloudflare’s DNS and security stack. Review Cloudflare Registrar for its current TLD and transfer details.

It is less universal for someone seeking a traditional domain-only experience or expecting a particular kind of human registrar support. Its at-cost positioning does not mean every extension has the same price, and you should confirm the current DNS requirements before moving a live domain.

3. Dynadot — best for investors and domain portfolios

Dynadot is built for buyers who use bulk search and portfolio tools, not just someone registering one personal .com. It advertises more than 600 extensions, bulk search, an API, auctions, appraisal, a marketplace, and free privacy. Its listed .co, .xyz, and .io examples show materially different regular prices, so check the exact extension and premium status before purchase. See Dynadot’s domain search and pricing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Its feature depth can feel like unnecessary complexity if you want only one domain and a minimal dashboard. For an investor, the useful comparison is not simply signup price: include renewals, marketplace activity, automation, and portfolio-management needs.

4. Namecheap — best-known general-purpose alternative for beginners

Namecheap offers domains alongside hosting, email, SSL, and related products, which can be convenient for a first-time site owner who wants one familiar provider. Its official domain page is the place to check current TLD availability and checkout terms: Namecheap domains.

Do not select it solely on an introductory price. Compare the standard renewal, privacy, and any optional items in checkout against the total cost at other registrars. The available information does not establish comparable current prices across those line items.

5. Squarespace Domains — best for Squarespace customers and former Google Domains users

Squarespace Domains addresses former Google Domains customers and advertises more than 400 extensions. It supports email forwarding and connecting a domain to external hosts, email providers, or applications, so registration does not require building a site with Squarespace. See Squarespace Domains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is a natural fit if your domain already belongs in a Squarespace workflow. A buyer with many domains should compare renewal costs before consolidating a portfolio; a clean interface or “all-in” vendor positioning is not a substitute for a line-item quote.

6. Hover — best for a simple domain-and-email setup

Hover focuses on domains and email with a less bundle-heavy pitch than an all-in-one business provider. Its domain page promotes renewal reminders, which can help reduce the chance of overlooking an upcoming expiration. Check Hover’s domain offering.

Choose it for a simple domain-and-email experience, not on the assumption that it is the cheapest registrar. Compare the actual price for each extension and the mailbox you need; the available information does not establish a full current price comparison.

7. NameSilo — worth a look for multi-domain owners

NameSilo advertises DNS management, forwarding, marketplace tools, and a discount program that may matter more as a portfolio grows. Its public page also contains inconsistent wording about whether privacy is free or an add-on. Verify the privacy line item in the cart before deciding. Review NameSilo’s domain page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It can be a portfolio candidate if its pricing and tools match your workflow, but do not assume its privacy terms from a general marketing statement. Evaluate the interface and support separately from the discount program.

8. Spaceship — best for exploring new extensions and introductory offers

Spaceship’s domain-search page is aimed at discovering a broad set of TLDs and presents competitive introductory pricing signals. That makes it a candidate for bargain hunters comparing extensions. Search domains at Spaceship.

Before buying, confirm the specific extension’s renewal and transfer prices, what privacy includes, and what support routes are available. The available information is not enough to make a broad claim about its long-term pricing or support quality.

9. GoDaddy — best fit when phone support and business bundles matter

GoDaddy combines domain registration with hosting, site building, email, marketing, and other business services. Its domain page lists features including free privacy, forwarding, DNSSEC, and transfer lock, as well as support positioning. It also displayed a $4.99 first-year .com offer for new customers, subject to checkout validation. Check GoDaddy’s domain page.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That offer is not a standard renewal quote. Choose GoDaddy when the connected business services and support options are useful enough to justify keeping services together; scrutinize the renewal and bundle totals if you need only a registrar.

10. IONOS — best for a domain bundled with hosting and email

IONOS is most relevant to buyers who want domains, hosting, email, and business services within one provider relationship. See its domain offering and compare the full order terms, including renewal, contract length, add-ons, and cancellation conditions.

The available information does not establish current comparable prices for IONOS’s domain and bundle options, so do not assume an introductory bundle remains the least expensive choice over time. If you value keeping registration separate from hosting, a registrar-only setup may offer more flexibility.

Choose by use case, not by one universal winner

  • One domain for a personal site or small business: Start with Porkbun for its balance of privacy and domain-related features; compare its exact renewal against alternatives.
  • Developer or technical team already using Cloudflare: Consider Cloudflare Registrar for its stated at-cost model and integrated DNS and security services.
  • Multiple domains, auctions, or automation: Compare Dynadot and NameSilo for bulk, marketplace, API, or discount-program fit.
  • Former Google Domains customer or Squarespace site: Squarespace Domains supports external hosting and email as well as its own ecosystem.
  • Want phone support and an all-in-one business account: GoDaddy is a fit to evaluate, with promotional pricing kept separate from renewals.
  • Want domain plus hosting and email under one vendor: Compare IONOS, GoDaddy, Squarespace, and Namecheap on the complete recurring bill.
  • Exploring a non-.com extension: Check the exact TLD’s availability, eligibility, premium status, renewal, transfer, and privacy at the registrar before ranking providers by price.

For a general buyer comparison, cost over three years, renewal transparency, security, DNS control, privacy, support, ease of use, and TLD selection are all relevant. A domain investor should give greater weight to bulk tools, transfer economics, marketplaces, and APIs; a beginner should put setup simplicity and renewal clarity first. A single overall score can hide these different priorities.

How to transfer a domain without disrupting a site or email

Transfers commonly require that the domain be eligible, unlocked, and authorized by its registrant. ICANN’s consensus policies include the Domain Name Transfer Policy; transfer rules and restrictions can vary with the domain’s status, recent changes, and registry.

  1. Prepare the destination account. Create and secure an account at the new registrar. Confirm that it supports your extension and can accept the domain.
  2. Check eligibility and timing. Review the domain’s registration date, recent transfer or registrant-contact changes, expiration status, and any dispute or compliance hold. Newly registered domains and recent changes can trigger transfer restrictions.
  3. Protect your working DNS and email. Record current nameservers and DNS records, especially MX and TXT records used by email. A registrar transfer does not necessarily require changing nameservers; avoid making that separate change unless intended.
  4. Unlock the domain and obtain authorization. At the current registrar, remove the transfer lock and obtain an EPP/authorization code if required. Confirm access to the registrant email or other authorization route.
  5. Start the transfer at the new registrar. Enter the domain and authorization code, then pay the transfer amount shown. Check whether that transfer adds a registration year and what happens to renewal settings.
  6. Approve any confirmation. Follow the approval instructions sent by the registrar. Do not ignore messages about the transfer or account changes.
  7. Verify after completion. Confirm the new registrar account controls the domain, nameservers and DNS still point where intended, the website and email resolve correctly, and auto-renew is set the way you want.

Do not treat “transfer the registrar” and “move DNS” as the same operation. Changing nameservers can affect site and mail routing even when the registration transfer itself leaves DNS unchanged.

When a bundle is useful—and when to keep services separate

A domain, website builder, hosting plan, and email package under one account can simplify setup, invoicing, and support. A promotional domain may also be discounted when purchased with another product. Bundling is most useful when you want the included services and have checked their renewal and cancellation terms.

Keeping the registrar separate from hosting and email can make provider changes easier, preserve DNS choice, reduce dependence on one vendor, and give you more flexibility as a site grows. Regardless of bundle, make sure the registrant account remains under your control and that you can access the DNS and transfer settings you may need later.

Final verdict

For many individual buyers and small businesses, Porkbun is the most balanced place to start. Choose Cloudflare when its DNS-centered model and at-cost pricing fit your technical setup; choose Dynadot when portfolio tools, auctions, and bulk workflows matter. Squarespace, Hover, GoDaddy, Namecheap, NameSilo, Spaceship, and IONOS each make more sense for particular combinations of simplicity, email, bundles, or portfolio needs. Before registering or transferring, compare the exact TLD’s renewal and transfer terms, confirm privacy and security options, and keep DNS changes separate from the registrar decision.
