Short answer: Docs in Proton Drive is a genuine end-to-end encrypted collaborative editor for writing, notes, briefs and shared documents. It can replace Google Docs or Word Online for many privacy-sensitive workflows, but Docs alone is not a complete Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 substitute. Proton Workspace is the broader suite, and even that currently lacks a presentation-app equivalent and some deep enterprise integrations.
What Docs in Proton Drive actually is
Proton Docs is a browser-based document editor integrated into Proton Drive. Drive supplies encrypted storage, synchronization and sharing; Docs supplies collaborative word processing. Proton announced the service on July 3, 2024 (Proton announcement).
It is intended for writing, meeting notes, project briefs, brainstorming, internal documentation and other text-led work. It is not a standalone replacement for an entire office suite. Proton Sheets is a separate spreadsheet product, while Proton Workspace combines Mail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, VPN and Pass.
That product boundary matters: “Proton Docs versus Google Docs” is a reasonable comparison for document editing. “Proton Docs versus Microsoft 365” is too broad unless the comparison is specifically about Word-style writing.

What you can do in Proton Docs
- Edit a document simultaneously with other people.
- See collaborator presence and live cursor activity.
- Leave comments and threaded replies.
- Use suggestions for review workflows similar to track changes.
- Give people viewing or editing permission.
- Share with Proton users or external collaborators through invitations and sharing links.
- Import or upload common Microsoft and Google office files through Proton Drive workflows.
- Download or export documents for use in conventional office software.
Proton advertises support for Word and Excel uploads, storage of Microsoft Office files without conversion, and common formats including .docx, .txt, .md, HTML, .xlsx and .csv (Proton Docs; Proton document editor; Proton’s Microsoft 365 comparison). Format support varies by product and workflow.
Importing a Word file does not prove perfect round-tripping. Complex layouts, fields, citations, embedded objects, macros, fonts, comments, tracked changes, footnotes and page breaks may not survive conversion unchanged.
How Proton’s encryption differs
Proton says Docs uses end-to-end encryption, including for document content, keystrokes and cursor movements (launch announcement). In this design, content is encrypted on the user’s device and intended to remain inaccessible to Proton. Proton also describes Drive as zero-access encrypted.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Three protections that are often confused
- End-to-end encryption: Content is encrypted before upload and decrypted only for authorized participants.
- Zero-access encryption: Proton says it does not possess the keys needed to decrypt stored content.
- Encryption in transit and at rest: Protects network traffic and stored data, but does not necessarily prevent a provider from technically decrypting content.
End-to-end encryption is a meaningful architectural distinction from mainstream suites whose provider-side access supports broad search, indexing, integrations and AI features. It is not a guarantee that every endpoint or workflow is safe. An authorized collaborator can copy, photograph, export or redistribute a document, and malware on a user’s device can capture content after it is opened. External sharing also enlarges the trust boundary.
Proton Docs versus Google Docs
| Area | Proton Docs | Google Docs |
|---|---|---|
| Privacy architecture | Proton presents Docs as end-to-end and zero-access encrypted, including keystrokes and cursor movements. | Google’s broad Workspace features depend on provider-side processing and access; it is not a zero-access document system. |
| Collaboration | Real-time editing, presence, comments, threaded discussion and suggestions. | Highly mature real-time collaboration, comments, templates and sharing workflows. |
| Integrations | Works within Proton Drive and the wider Proton ecosystem; the integration and add-on range is narrower. | Deep connections to Drive, Gmail, Meet, Slides, Apps Script, add-ons and third-party services. |
| File handling | Common Word, Excel and text formats are supported, but complex conversion requires testing. | Strong native Google format support and extensive conversion tools. |
| AI | Privacy-focused architecture limits provider-side processing. Proton Workspace Premium includes Lumo, described by Proton as not training on user data. | Gemini features and other Google AI capabilities provide a broader ecosystem, but require accepting Google’s processing model and applicable settings. |
| Best fit | Private notes, drafts, sensitive documents and small-team writing. | Teams prioritizing frictionless collaboration, integrations and mature administration. |
Proton itself positions Docs as a private Google Docs alternative, not as proof of feature parity (Proton’s Google Docs alternative page). Choose Proton when provider-inaccessible content matters more than Google’s add-ons, scripts, publishing tools, forms, citations and administrative depth.
Proton Docs versus Word and Microsoft 365
As a Microsoft Word alternative
For browser-based collaborative writing, Proton Docs can replace much of Word Online: drafting, review, comments, suggestions and sharing. It is a sensible option for teams that mainly create ordinary text documents and are willing to export a final .docx when needed.

It is a poor substitute for advanced desktop Word workflows involving complex templates, specialized fields, extensive citation tooling, macros, embedded enterprise objects or strict print-layout requirements.
As a Microsoft 365 replacement
Microsoft 365 includes desktop Word, Excel and PowerPoint plus Outlook, Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, identity administration and compliance tooling. Proton Docs does not provide those capabilities by itself.

File compatibility: test before migrating
Proton says you can upload Word and Excel files, import supported Google Docs and Sheets files through Drive workflows, and work with common office formats (document editor; Microsoft 365 comparison). Treat this as format support, not a promise of identical behavior.
A practical migration checklist
- Keep the original files and export a backup before migration.
- Choose representative simple and complex documents.
- Check headings, tables, images, hyperlinks, page breaks, headers, footers, footnotes and citations.
- Test comments and suggestions, including whether they remain available after export.
- Export edited documents back to
.docxand compare layout and pagination with the originals. - Test embedded objects, fields, macros and specialized templates separately; do not assume they work.
- Move one project or team first, then expand only if the exported results meet your requirements.
Sharing with people outside Proton
Proton says external collaborators can be invited by email or secure sharing link, including people without Proton accounts. Business material describes password protection, expiration controls and revocation for sharing links (Proton Docs; Proton’s Microsoft 365 comparison).
Check the current sharing dialog for the exact authentication requirement for each permission level. A link can be forwarded, a recipient’s device can be compromised, and revoking access cannot retract a file that someone already downloaded or copied.

Where Docs is available
Proton says Docs can be accessed on the web and through Proton Drive desktop and mobile applications (Proton document editor). That establishes access to the service, not identical editing capability on every platform. Verify whether the feature you need—such as suggestions, comments or a particular import path—works on your target browser, phone, tablet or desktop setup.
Getting started
- Create or sign in to a Proton account.
- Open Proton Drive.
- Select New and choose the document option.
- Invite collaborators and assign view or edit permissions.
- Use comments or suggestions during review.
- Import an existing supported file when necessary.
- Export or download a conventional office format for delivery.
Proton documented the New control in its July 3, 2024 launch announcement; interface labels can change, so follow the current Drive interface if they differ.
Pricing and plan boundaries
Proton Drive has a free tier with 5 GB of end-to-end encrypted storage, and Proton says the free plan receives the same encryption level as paid plans (Proton Drive pricing). “Free” is limited by storage and does not imply unlimited team administration or Workspace functionality. Proton’s consumer pricing FAQ says paid capacity can reach 3 TB; business storage can be customized.
| Plan signal | Published detail | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Drive free | 5 GB encrypted storage. | Storage use, sharing limits and current regional terms. |
| Workspace Standard | $12.99/€12.99 per user per month on annual billing, or $14.99/€14.99 monthly, according to Proton’s March 31, 2026 announcement. | Live checkout price, billing frequency, taxes, seat minimums, storage and business eligibility. |
| Workspace Premium | $19.99/€19.99 on annual billing, or $24.99/€24.99 monthly, according to the same announcement. | Included storage, retention controls, Meet limits and Lumo availability. |
Workspace Standard includes Mail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Meet, VPN and Pass. Premium adds expanded storage, retention controls, higher Meet participant limits and Lumo, according to Proton’s announcement. Prices and plan terminology can change, so confirm the live checkout page before publication or purchase.

Who should choose Proton Docs?
Good candidates
- Individuals who want private notes, journals or drafts.
- Journalists, researchers, consultants and small teams handling sensitive working documents.
- Organizations that need encrypted collaborative writing but not a presentation suite.
- Teams comfortable retaining Word or LibreOffice for advanced final formatting.
Likely poor candidates
- Microsoft-heavy enterprises dependent on desktop Office, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint or Active Directory.
- Teams whose work relies on macros, complex Excel models, Power Query or enterprise ERP connectors.
- Google Workspace teams dependent on Apps Script, add-ons, Slides, Forms or large-scale administration.
- Anyone requiring a mature presentation editor inside the same service.
Security, compliance and AI caveats
Proton markets Docs and Workspace toward regulated sectors and references HIPAA, GDPR, GLBA, CCPA, ISO 27001 and SOC 2. Encryption can support a compliance program, but it does not make an organization compliant by itself. Contracts, jurisdiction, configuration, access controls, retention, audit procedures and employee practices still matter. Obtain the applicable agreement and plan details before placing regulated records in the service.
Proton’s statement that Lumo does not train on user data is a policy and architecture claim about Proton’s service. It is not the same as saying every AI system has identical capabilities or that no technical processing occurs. Compare Lumo, Gemini and Copilot separately from the document editor.
Quick Recap
A practical decision rule
- Need encrypted collaborative writing? Proton Docs is worth piloting with representative files.
- Need a full office suite with presentations and mature enterprise integrations? Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 remains the safer fit.
- Need both? Keep sensitive drafts and working documents in Proton Docs, while using Word, Excel, PowerPoint or LibreOffice for advanced production and final-format checks.
