Spotify Car Thing is dead as an official Spotify product, but its hardware is not useless. Spotify disabled every unit on December 9, 2024. Community projects such as DeskThing and Nocturne can repurpose the touchscreen, buttons, and control dial as a media controller, dashboard, or macro pad. They do not restore Spotify’s commercial product or guarantee the original experience.
What happened to Spotify Car Thing?
Spotify introduced Car Thing as a limited U.S. hardware experiment in 2021, then made it generally available in February 2022 for $89.99. It required a Spotify Premium account and a smartphone with mobile data or Wi-Fi. Spotify discontinued the product in 2022 and later announced that all devices would stop operating after December 9, 2024.
On that date, the stock software was disabled and affected units displayed a shutdown message. Spotify directed owners toward its refund process, factory reset, and electronic-waste disposal. The original refund arrangements were tied to the shutdown period; they should not be treated as a current entitlement. For any present exception, contact Spotify support.

Is an old Car Thing still usable?
Officially: no
A stock unit is not an officially supported Spotify player. Powering on or seeing the old interface does not prove that Spotify authentication, catalog access, voice search, or playback still works.
Workarounds: partial and unreliable
Early bypasses attempted to hide the shutdown screen or preserve pieces of the original interface. Treat those methods as historical experiments. They depended on services Spotify has removed and can lose functionality without warning.

Replacement software: potentially yes
Community firmware and companion applications replace or work around the original software stack. The result is a repurposed controller. It is not the original Spotify service, and capabilities depend on the project, host computer, network, account permissions, and current Spotify APIs.

DeskThing
DeskThing is a free, open-source replacement environment and web-app platform for Car Thing. Its documented model commonly uses a desktop host application to communicate with the device. Available community apps include Spotify playback control, local-audio control, weather, lyrics, timers, Pomodoro tools, macros, Discord, GitHub, Trello, and Stream Deck-style controls. When checked in July 2026, the project homepage reported version 0.11.17, more than 300,000 server downloads, more than 1.9 million app downloads, and over 5,000 Discord members. Those are project-reported activity figures, not an audited count of active devices. The app directory listed a Spotify app at 0.11.1 and a local-audio app at 0.11.2 at that time; releases can change, so consult the current project pages before installing.
Nocturne
Nocturne is a separate open-source community effort intended to give Car Thing a second life in a car or at a desk. It emphasizes a focused, simpler setup path and community support. That positioning is not an official Spotify endorsement, and feature breadth and release maturity should be judged from Nocturne’s current documentation rather than older posts.

Thing Labs and lower-level tools
Thing Labs maintains Car Thing, also known by its internal codename “Superbird,” tools and firmware-related repositories. The spotify-car-thing-bt project and related connector work explore firmware, Bluetooth, and replacement connection layers. These repositories are community-maintained and changing; they are aimed at people comfortable with recovery modes, flashing, and debugging, not drivers seeking a guaranteed appliance.

What can work, and what usually cannot?

Spotify Premium may still be required for account features. Tokens, redirect URIs, scopes, and API policies can change, so an update can break authentication even when the hardware and display remain functional.

How a community conversion generally works
- Identify the hardware. Confirm that it is a genuine Spotify Car Thing, powers on, and has no obvious physical damage.
- Choose the project. DeskThing suits users wanting a broad app platform; Nocturne suits a focused revival; Thing Labs tools suit firmware specialists.
- Use current instructions. Follow the official website or repository documentation, not an old Reddit post, video description, or copied command. DeskThing specifically warns users to use its official installer rather than blindly pulling the main branch.
- Prepare a supported computer. The chosen setup may require a desktop application or server for communication, Spotify integration, or other apps.
- Enter recovery or flashing mode. Button combinations are version-sensitive. Copy them only from the current project instructions.
- Back up before writing. Preserve original firmware or device data when the project documents a supported backup method.
- Flash or load the replacement environment. This is the highest-risk step. Do not interrupt a write operation unless the documentation tells you how to recover.
- Configure and test. Assign controls, authenticate through the supported method, and test power, network or Bluetooth behavior, display updates, playback, sleep, and reboot before mounting the unit in a vehicle.
Troubleshooting and security
- If the installer cannot detect the device, try another documented recovery mode, USB cable, USB port, or computer.
- If flashing fails, avoid repeatedly unplugging the unit during a write.
- If Spotify authentication stalls, check the callback address, host status, firewall, local-network access, and the project’s current issue tracker.
- If the display works but playback does not, separate hardware communication problems from Spotify account or API problems.
- If an app breaks after an update, follow the project’s documented removal or downgrade process.
- Download only from official project sites or repositories. Review requested permissions, avoid unofficial patched installers, and revoke third-party Spotify access if you abandon a project.
Configure and troubleshoot while parked. A community-modified controller has no safety certification; minimize interaction while driving and follow local distracted-driving laws.
Who should—and should not—do this?
DeskThing is the better fit when
- You want a broad app ecosystem or a desk dashboard.
- You are comfortable running a companion application.
- You want programmable buttons, macros, or Stream Deck-like controls.
Nocturne is the better fit when
- You mainly want a Car Thing-specific revival.
- You prefer a focused open-source setup over a large app platform.
- You accept community-based support and changing releases.
Low-level tools are appropriate when
- You understand firmware, recovery modes, repositories, and debugging.
- You can tolerate recovery work after a failed flash.
Skip the project when
- You need guaranteed reliability or official Spotify support.
- You cannot risk making the device unusable.
- Your vehicle already offers dependable Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Do not buy an expensive used Car Thing solely because hacks exist. It makes sense mainly when you specifically want its physical controls and enjoy open-source tinkering.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Spotify Car Thing is permanently dead as Spotify hardware, but community software has rescued the device as a control interface. DeskThing offers the broadest visible ecosystem; Nocturne offers a more focused revival; low-level Thing Labs tools demand the most skill. None recreates Spotify’s original product reliably. Tinkerers may find the project worthwhile, while drivers seeking dependable music control should use a phone mount or existing Android Auto or CarPlay.
