“Network lost” is usually a description of an iPhone showing SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching. The fastest safe sequence is to toggle Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds, restart the iPhone, check carrier and iOS updates, verify the active SIM or eSIM line, ask the carrier about outages or account blocks, and use Reset Network Settings only after those checks.
This guide addresses cellular connectivity. A Wi‑Fi failure or an internet problem inside one app follows a different troubleshooting path.
One-minute triage
- Look at the status bar. Note whether it says SOS, SOS only, No Service, or Searching.
- Turn on Airplane Mode, leave it on for at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Move outdoors or to another location and check whether service returns.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi and check Settings > General > About for a carrier-settings update.
- Install any available update at Settings > General > Software Update.
- Check that the intended cellular line is enabled, especially on a Dual SIM or eSIM iPhone.
- If you are abroad, check Data Roaming and your plan.
- Contact the carrier before erasing an eSIM or resetting the phone.
- Use Reset Network Settings only after the carrier has ruled out an outage, account issue, provisioning problem, or device block.
Apple’s cellular troubleshooting guidance covers these symptoms and steps: SOS, No Service, or Searching on iPhone.
What “network lost” means on an iPhone
| What you see | Meaning | What still may work |
|---|---|---|
| SOS or SOS only | The iPhone is not connected to its normal carrier. In the United States, Canada, and Australia, Apple says emergency calls may still be available through another carrier network where supported. | Emergency calling may work; ordinary calls, texts, and mobile data are not restored. |
| No Service | The iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. | Wi‑Fi services can still work. |
| Searching | The iPhone is trying to find a cellular network. | Wi‑Fi services can still work while registration is unsuccessful. |
| Bars appear, but cellular data fails | This is not necessarily a complete network-loss problem. Cellular Data may be disabled, the wrong line may be selected, roaming may be off, or the plan or carrier configuration may be the issue. | Calls and texts may continue working. |
| Wi‑Fi is disconnected | This is a Wi‑Fi problem rather than a cellular-registration problem. | Cellular service may still be normal. |
“Network lost” is a reader-friendly phrase, not Apple’s usual status-bar wording. Use the exact message when contacting Apple or your carrier.

Try the reversible fixes first
Cycle Airplane Mode
Open Control Center or Settings, turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, and turn it off. This makes the iPhone attempt cellular registration again without changing your saved data or account settings. If service returns only briefly, treat that as a clue and continue checking coverage, the account, the SIM or eSIM, and carrier settings.
Restart the iPhone
Restart normally using the device’s power controls, then wait for the status bar to settle. A restart can clear a temporary radio or software state, but it cannot repair an outage, suspended account, incomplete eSIM activation, blocked IMEI, or physical damage.
Test another location
Step outside, move a short distance, or try a location where the carrier normally has coverage. If service works elsewhere, the original location may have weak coverage or a local outage. If the problem follows you, involve the carrier rather than repeatedly restarting.

Install carrier settings and iOS updates
Check carrier settings
- Connect the iPhone to Wi‑Fi.
- Open Settings > General > About.
- Wait on the About screen. If an update is offered, tap the option to install it.
The installed version appears beside Carrier in the eSIM section in Apple’s current instructions. Menu wording can vary by country; some regions say “network provider.” A newly inserted SIM may require downloading settings for its carrier.

Update iOS
Go to Settings > General > Software Update and install the latest compatible release offered for the iPhone. Updates may require Wi‑Fi, free storage, and charging time. An update can address software compatibility, but it will not fix a carrier outage or damaged hardware.
Check the active SIM or eSIM line
Dual SIM and eSIM
- Open Settings.
- Tap Cellular. Depending on region, this may be called Mobile Data or Mobile.
- Tap the affected line.
- Confirm Turn On This Line is enabled.
- If two lines are active, verify that the intended line is selected for cellular data.
If the line is not listed, the carrier may need to activate or reprovision the eSIM. Do not delete an eSIM casually: removing it can require carrier reactivation and make recovery harder.
Physical SIM
If the iPhone uses a physical SIM and the problem began after a transfer or SIM change, power the phone off and reseat the SIM correctly. A damaged, loose, or incompatible SIM needs replacement by the carrier. If the line is missing from Settings or the SIM is visibly damaged, contact the carrier rather than forcing the tray or performing a factory reset.

- Go to Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and ensure Cellular Data is on.
- On a Dual SIM iPhone, select the correct line for data.
- When abroad, check Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options and consider Data Roaming.
- Ask the carrier whether your data allowance, plan, and line provisioning are valid.
- Check for a carrier-settings update.
Data Roaming can incur additional charges, depending on the carrier and plan. A phone with working calls and texts but no data does not necessarily have a No Service condition.

International travel and iPhones bought abroad
For international travel, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data), turn on cellular data, tap Cellular Data Options or Mobile Data Options, and enable Data Roaming if your plan supports it. Confirm pricing with the carrier first.
If the iPhone was purchased in another country, ask the local carrier whether the device requires IMEI registration or has regional compatibility restrictions. Registration rules are country-specific. Apple identifies this as a possible cause of service loss for foreign-purchased iPhones.
Ask the carrier to check the network and account
Contact the carrier when service is missing in several locations, other customers on the same carrier are affected, the line was recently activated or transferred, or restarting provides only temporary relief. Ask the carrier to verify:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Account status, billing, and any suspension or block.
- Local outages and coverage at your location.
- That the plan supports the iPhone and intended cellular use.
- SIM or eSIM provisioning and number-transfer completion.
- Whether the device IMEI is blocked or barred.
- Any IMEI-registration requirement for a phone bought abroad.
Only the carrier can inspect account provisioning, billing blocks, local tower conditions, and carrier-side device restrictions. Have the iPhone model, phone number, exact status message, location, and SIM/eSIM type ready.

Reset Network Settings—only after the checks above
Apple’s current path is Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This does not erase photos, apps, messages, or other personal content. It does remove network configuration, including:
- Saved Wi‑Fi passwords and preferred networks.
- VPN settings.
- APN settings previously used.
Before resetting, make sure you know your Wi‑Fi passwords and have any required VPN details. Afterward, reconnect to Wi‑Fi and re-enter network information. Apple describes this as a later troubleshooting measure for connection and calling problems: Call fails or cannot receive calls on iPhone.
Special cases
Service returns temporarily after a restart
Temporary recovery points to an unresolved registration, coverage, carrier-settings, SIM/eSIM, or hardware problem. Check whether the issue follows the phone or the SIM, test more than one location, and have the carrier inspect the line instead of repeatedly resetting settings.
Recommended Free Tools
Service disappeared after changing carriers
Prioritize carrier-settings installation, eSIM activation, the correct enabled line, physical-SIM fit, and completion of number transfer. The old eSIM should not be deleted unless the carrier or Apple specifically instructs you to do so.

Older iPhones and 3G shutdowns
Apple separately identifies iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and earlier as devices that may depend on 3G networks being retired by carriers. The effect depends on the country and carrier. For iPhone 6 and later, Apple directs users to check LTE settings where relevant. This is mainly a legacy-device issue, not the expected cause on modern 5G-capable iPhones.
Apple Support diagnostics
For supported iPhone models running iOS 18 or later, Apple says the Apple Support app can run additional diagnostics. Availability and diagnostic options can vary by region and device.
When hardware service is appropriate
Hardware is suspected—not proven—when the carrier confirms the account, coverage, line provisioning, SIM/eSIM, and device status are normal, yet the iPhone remains without service after the standard software checks and network reset. Arrange Apple or authorized service sooner if the problem followed a drop, liquid exposure, or other physical damage.
A useful comparison is whether the same SIM works in another compatible phone. If it does, but multiple networks or lines fail on this iPhone, provide Apple with the model, iOS version, exact status message, locations tested, SIM/eSIM type, carrier findings, and any impact or liquid history.
What not to do
- Do not factory-reset the iPhone as a first-line network fix; it erases the device and does not repair carrier-side problems.
- Do not rely on undocumented carrier codes or random “signal repair” apps; procedures vary by carrier and region.
- Do not assume switching between 5G and LTE will solve an outage, blocked device, or damaged SIM.
- Do not delete an eSIM without a reactivation plan from the carrier.
- Do not treat SOS as normal service. Use emergency calling only for a genuine emergency, where emergency service is available.
The Bottom Line
Start with Airplane Mode, a restart, updates, and the active-line check. If the iPhone still shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, let the carrier rule out outages, account blocks, provisioning, coverage, and IMEI restrictions. Reset Network Settings comes later; Apple service is the next step only after carrier-side causes have been excluded.
