Epic connection failures can affect the launcher, account login, downloads, Fortnite matchmaking, Rocket League parties, or only one device. First check Epic’s live status page, then compare your normal connection with a phone hotspot. That two-minute check tells you whether to wait for an Epic incident, repair your local network, or contact your internet provider.
Is Epic Games down?
Open status.epicgames.com and inspect individual components, not just the overall banner. Epic separates Login, Game Services, Matchmaking, Parties, Friends and Messaging, Voice Chat, Epic Games Store downloads and installation, and Epic Online Services authentication, sessions, lobbies, and peer-to-peer services.
A status snapshot captured on August 18, 2026 showed Fortnite, Rocket League, Epic Online Services, login, matchmaking, parties, and game services operational, while Epic Games Store download and installation had degraded performance. An unresolved incident also affected some Windows 10 players installing or updating games. That was a time-specific observation, not a permanent status; always use the live page before changing your setup.

If an incident matches your symptom, note its name, affected component, region, and time. Wait for Epic’s update instead of reinstalling games, forwarding ports, or changing DNS during a confirmed outage. A regional or component-only incident can leave other players working normally.
Quick tests that locate the fault
- Open the Epic Games website in a browser.
- Try the Epic Games Launcher and record the exact error code.
- Check whether another Epic product works. A Store download, Fortnite match, Rocket League party, and Epic account login can fail independently.
- Try another device on the same network.
- Connect the affected device to a mobile hotspot. If the hotspot works, your router, home DNS, ISP route, or network filtering is the leading suspect; Epic recommends contacting the ISP when another connection resolves the error (Epic troubleshooting guidance).
- Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet and stop other large downloads while testing.
| Observation | Likely area | First response |
|---|---|---|
| Only one game fails | Game cache, files, region, firewall rule, or game service | Check that game’s component status, then clear or verify its files. |
| Launcher and several games fail | Epic services, DNS, proxy, firewall, ISP, or outage | Check status, proxy settings, hotspot, and DNS. |
| Only downloads or updates fail | Store incident, disk space, cache, CDN/domain block, Windows issue | Check Store status, free space, cache, and another network. |
| Gameplay works but downloads are slow | Wi-Fi congestion, background traffic, launcher settings, or ISP throttling | Use Ethernet, stop competing traffic, and compare another connection. |
| Hotspot works but home internet does not | Router, ISP DNS, routing, or filtering | Restore router settings, test DNS, then contact the ISP. |
| It works only through a VPN | Routing or regional path difference | Treat the VPN as a diagnostic comparison, not a required fix. |
Fixes to try in order
1. Restart every part of the connection
- Exit the game and Epic Games Launcher, including its system-tray process.
- Restart the computer or console.
- Power off the modem and router for about 30 seconds.
- Power the modem back on, wait for service, then power on the router.
- Retry the launcher and game.
For Wi-Fi testing, use Ethernet if possible, move nearer the access point, disconnect high-bandwidth devices, and temporarily turn off nearby Bluetooth devices if interference is suspected. Ethernet improves diagnostic stability; it cannot repair an Epic outage or a bad ISP route.

2. Disable VPNs and proxies temporarily
Epic warns that proxies can prevent service connections. Search Windows for Proxy Settings, turn off Manual Proxy Setup, and check for an http_proxy environment variable. In an elevated Command Prompt, you can reset the Windows proxy with:
netsh winhttp reset proxy
Disconnect VPN software while testing because it changes DNS, routing, region detection, NAT, and source IP. If only the VPN path works, give the ISP the comparison rather than assuming a VPN is necessary; it can add latency or cause region and matchmaking problems.

3. Synchronize the device clock
An incorrect date or time can break authentication certificates and login. Enable automatic time and time-zone synchronization, apply it, and restart the launcher.
4. Clear the launcher cache safely
Epic identifies cache corruption as a possible cause of connection, cloud-sync, and launch failures (cache guidance). Exit the launcher completely and confirm in Task Manager that it is closed. Delete only the web/cache folders named on Epic’s current launcher-cache page, then reopen the launcher and let it rebuild them. Do not delete the entire launcher installation directory; clearing the documented cache should not remove installed games.

5. Reset Windows networking
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
netsh winsock reset
Restart Windows. Open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
These commands refresh local sockets, the IP lease, and cached DNS records. They cannot fix an outage, suspended account, blocked school network, or broken ISP route (Epic’s command procedure).
6. Try public DNS only after basic tests
Epic lists Google Public DNS and Cloudflare as alternatives (DNS instructions). Google’s values are IPv4 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4; IPv6 2001:4860:4860:0:0:0:0:8888 and 2001:4860:4860:0:0:0:0:8844. DNS may correct failed or stale name lookups, but normally does not lower game ping, fix packet loss, or bypass an outage. Restore automatic DNS if the test is worse.
Windows 11 path
- Right-click the Windows icon and choose System.
- Open Network & Internet, then Ethernet or Wi-Fi.
- Select Edit beside DNS server assignment.
- Choose Manual, enable IPv4, enter the addresses, and save.
PlayStation and Xbox paths
On PlayStation, use Settings → Network → Set Up Internet Connection → Wi-Fi/LAN → Custom → DNS Settings: Manual. Leave IP automatic, MTU automatic, disable the proxy, and run the connection test. On Xbox, use Settings → General → Network Settings → Advanced Settings → DNS Settings → Manual, then enter 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.

7. Check firewall and antivirus interception
Temporarily disable only third-party web or network protection, test, then immediately re-enable it. If that identifies the cause, create a narrowly scoped exception for the launcher or game and remove duplicate or stale firewall rules. Never leave protection disabled.
Epic documents an ESP-DIST-001 case involving certain Bitdefender settings after an update. Its cited path is Protection → Firewall → Settings → Default application behaviour → Edit default rules; for that specific scenario Epic says relevant Hamachi and Wi-Fi automatic settings should be Allow (Epic Fortnite connection guidance). This is not a diagnosis for every Bitdefender or Epic error.
8. Verify game files
For Fortnite on PC, close the game and launcher, press Windows key + R, enter %localappdata%, and delete the FortniteGame folder. Restart Windows, run Epic Games Launcher as administrator, open Library, select Fortnite’s three dots, then Manage → Verify. Verification can redownload files. Epic says to keep at least 10 GB free on the installation drive and reports that some players resolved ESP errors by installing Fortnite on the same drive as the launcher; neither is a universal guarantee.
Fortnite-specific problems
For “Network Connection Lost” or ESP-DIST errors, follow the status, hotspot, proxy/VPN, cache, DNS, security-software, and Verify sequence above. A successful hotspot test points toward home routing or filtering, while identical failure on every network points toward Epic services, account authentication, or local game files. Do not reinstall before verification and service checks.

Rocket League connection errors
“Not Logged in to Rocket League Servers,” “No servers online,” “Unknown error while communicating with Rocket League Servers,” and Error 71 can result from service incidents, region selection, NAT or firewall behavior, DNS, cache, or packet loss. Check the relevant status components, confirm the selected region, restart the router, and test Ethernet or a hotspot. Rocket League’s troubleshooting guidance also says to check whether you are in a restricted region (Epic Rocket League guidance). A VPN is not a guaranteed remedy.

Restricted school, work, hotel, and public networks
Captive portals, DNS filtering, TLS inspection, blocked UDP traffic, and gaming restrictions can block authentication or matchmaking. Ask the network administrator to allow Epic’s published account, launcher, catalog, friends, entitlement, download, store, and authentication domains (Epic domain whitelist). Do not bypass organizational controls. A hotspot is a useful comparison but may have data caps, higher latency, or carrier-grade NAT.
Ports: last resort, not a first fix
Epic’s port page lists 80, 433, 443, 3478, 3479, 5060, 5062, 5222, 6250, 12000-65000 and describes Windows Firewall rules under Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Defender Firewall → Advanced settings → Inbound Rules → New Rule → Port (Epic port guidance). The page includes both 433 and 443; 433 appears to be a typographical error, so verify the current page before using it rather than silently correcting Epic’s list. Do not casually forward the entire 12000–65000 range. Application-based permissions and the earlier diagnostic steps are safer for ordinary home users, and Epic’s Windows instructions may differ by Windows version.

- Epic Player Support: launcher, account, Fortnite, Rocket League, Fall Guys, or Epic Online Services failures that persist across networks.
- Microsoft, Sony, or Nintendo: platform network errors, including the Xbox queue case.
- Your ISP: the hotspot works but your home connection does not, especially after router and DNS tests.
- School, work, hotel, or library IT: restricted-network blocks.
Include the platform, game, exact error, region, ISP, timestamp, status-page component, Wi-Fi/Ethernet result, and hotspot result. This evidence prevents support from repeating unrelated fixes.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly reinstall a game before checking status, network path, cache, and file verification.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or firewall protection.
- Do not assume public DNS will improve in-game latency.
- Do not treat a VPN as a permanent cure or evidence that Epic requires one.
- Do not open broad inbound ports without understanding the security impact.
- Do not confuse a Store download incident with a Fortnite or Rocket League matchmaking incident.
The Bottom Line
Start with Epic’s component status page, then run a hotspot comparison. If the issue follows the device, use the cache, proxy, DNS, Winsock, security, and file-verification steps; if it stays on the home network, involve the router or ISP; if Epic lists an incident, wait for the affected service to recover.
