The supported way to make macOS Sequoia installation media is to download the complete Install macOS Sequoia.app into /Applications, connect a blank USB drive of at least 32 GB, rename it MyVolume, and run Apple’s built-in createinstallmedia tool in Terminal. The process erases the selected USB volume, so copy off anything you need first.

Do you actually need a bootable USB?

Usually, no. macOS can be upgraded or reinstalled from System Settings, the Mac App Store, or macOS Recovery. A bootable installer is most useful when you need to erase and reinstall a Mac, the internal system will not start, several compatible Macs need Sequoia, internet access is limited, or you want a known installer available before troubleshooting.

This creates installation media, not a portable, independently bootable copy of macOS on the external drive. The target Mac must still support Sequoia. Apple also says the Mac should be connected to the internet during installation so the installer can obtain firmware and Mac-specific information; the USB does not guarantee a completely offline installation. See Apple’s current procedure at Create a bootable installer for macOS.

What you need

  • A Mac from which the full Sequoia installer can be downloaded.
  • A blank USB flash drive or other secondary volume with at least 32 GB. Apple says 32 GB is more than enough for any installer listed on its bootable-installer page.
  • The application named exactly Install macOS Sequoia.app in /Applications.
  • A direct USB connection is preferable during creation and startup. Keep the Mac connected to power and the internet.

The creation process automatically erases the selected volume and formats it as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Do not use a drive containing files you have not backed up.

Step 1: Download the complete Sequoia installer

Use Apple’s macOS download instructions, the Mac App Store, or Apple’s supported Terminal download method. You need the complete application, not a small updater, .dmg, or .pkg file. Apple may require the Mac downloading the installer to be compatible with that macOS release.

  1. Download Sequoia from Apple’s official source.
  2. If the installer opens automatically, quit it without starting an installation.
  3. In Finder, open /Applications and verify that Install macOS Sequoia.app is present.

If you received only a disk image or package, follow Apple’s download guidance to obtain the full installer application rather than using an unofficial modified copy.

Step 2: Prepare and rename the USB drive

  1. Connect the USB drive directly to the Mac and copy off any files.
  2. In Finder, select the mounted volume and choose Rename.
  3. Set its name to MyVolume, using that exact spelling and capitalization.
  4. Confirm that Finder shows the expected volume before opening Terminal.

Apple’s command targets /Volumes/MyVolume. If you keep another name, change only that path in the command. A simple name avoids shell-escaping problems caused by spaces and punctuation.

If the drive cannot be erased automatically

Open Disk Utility, choose View > Show All Devices if needed, select the intended external device or volume carefully, and choose Erase with Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then retry the Apple command. Manual partition-map settings are not required by Apple’s current Sequoia instructions.

Step 3: Create the installer in Terminal

Open Terminal from /Applications/Utilities or with Spotlight. Before pressing Return, check once more that the USB is the volume you intend to erase. Paste this command exactly:

sudo /Applications/Install macOS Sequoia.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/MyVolume
  1. Press Return.
  2. Enter an administrator password when prompted. Terminal displays no characters while you type; this is normal.
  3. When Terminal asks whether to erase the volume, type Y and press Return.
  4. Wait while the drive is erased and the installer files are copied. Do not disconnect it.
  5. Continue until Terminal reports that the install media is available.

When creation finishes, Apple normally renames the volume to something such as Install macOS Sequoia. Quit Terminal, eject the volume in Finder, and disconnect it safely.

Upgrade or erase and install?

After booting, an upgrade or reinstall can preserve the existing system when supported. A clean installation requires using Disk Utility to erase the internal startup volume first. Erasing the internal disk permanently removes its data; perform it only after a verified backup and when you have confirmed the correct disk.

Creating the USB does not erase the Mac’s internal disk. It erases only the external volume specified after --volume.

USB flash drive or external SSD?

Medium Best for Trade-offs
32 GB or larger USB flash drive One-time or occasional installs and a small recovery kit Usually slower; poor-quality or counterfeit media can fail during long writes
External SSD Administrators who reuse one drive for installers, diagnostics, backups, and files Costs more and is unnecessary for a single Sequoia installer; the selected volume is still erased

Apple supports a USB flash drive or another secondary volume. A faster SSD does not change the command or make an incompatible Mac installable.

Troubleshooting

Symptom What to check
“The installer does not appear to be a valid installer application” Delete the installer, use Disk Utility to repair the startup disk, download the full app again, and retry. An incomplete download is a common cause.
“Command not found” Confirm the app is exactly /Applications/Install macOS Sequoia.app, copy the command again, and check capitalization and escaped spaces.
Volume not found Make sure the USB is mounted and named MyVolume, or change the /Volumes/... path to its actual name.
Terminal cannot erase the drive Check for a write-protection switch, close apps using the disk, disconnect other removable drives, try another port or adapter, and erase it in Disk Utility as Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Repeated disconnects indicate unreliable hardware.
USB absent from startup options Use a direct connection rather than a hub or monitor, shut down fully, repeat the correct Apple silicon or Intel key sequence, and try another known-good port or drive. Verify that Terminal reported successful completion.
Installation refuses to continue Confirm Sequoia compatibility, connect to the internet, check available internal storage, verify date and time if certificate errors appear, and use Disk Utility to repair the internal disk when appropriate.
T2 Intel Mac blocks external startup Allow external-media startup in Startup Security Utility while booted into macOS Recovery.

Important limits

  • Apple’s official media does not bypass Sequoia hardware requirements or support unsupported Macs.
  • Installing Sequoia on an unsupported Mac with a patcher is a separate, higher-risk workflow involving compatibility, security, and update decisions.
  • On a Mac running macOS Sierra 10.12.6 or earlier, Apple documents an additional --applicationpath argument for createinstallmedia. Do not add that legacy option to the normal current-Mac command unless Apple’s instructions for that environment require it.
  • A single USB volume is normally used for one installer. Multiple installers require separate volumes or a different, separately managed storage setup.

The Bottom Line

For an official Sequoia installer, use Apple’s full Install macOS Sequoia.app, a backed-up 32 GB-or-larger blank volume, and the version-specific createinstallmedia command. Confirm compatibility and keep the target Mac online during installation.
