Quick answer: On most Windows and Linux desktop browsers, press F11 to hide the tabs, address bar, and other browser chrome; press it again to return. A laptop may require Fn+F11. On macOS, Control+Command+F toggles the app’s macOS fullscreen mode, while some browsers publish their own shortcut. For a video, game, or presentation, use the player’s fullscreen icon instead—the content and browser-window modes are different.
First, choose the fullscreen mode you need
“Fullscreen” can mean several different things. Choose the result you want before pressing a shortcut:

If your goal is larger text, use zoom or accessibility settings rather than fullscreen. For example, Edge documents page zoom separately from fullscreen in its accessibility features.
Use fullscreen in Google Chrome
Windows and Linux
- Click the Chrome window so it is active.
- Press F11. Chrome hides its tabs, address bar, and other interface elements.
- Press F11 again to return. Google also documents holding Esc as an exit method in supported desktop configurations.
On a laptop whose function row controls volume or brightness, use Fn+F11. Google’s current shortcut list is at Chrome keyboard shortcuts.

macOS
- Press Fn+F on keyboards where Chrome uses that browser shortcut.
- Repeat the shortcut to leave that view.
- If your configuration uses macOS app fullscreen, try Control+Command+F instead.
Apple identifies Control+Command+F as the app-fullscreen shortcut when an app supports it; the top-row key may require Fn or Globe. See Apple’s Mac keyboard shortcuts.
Use Chrome’s menu
Select the three-dot menu, then look near the Zoom controls for the fullscreen icon. Chrome can move labels or icon placement between releases, so use the icon and its tooltip rather than relying on an exact menu position.
Use fullscreen in Microsoft Edge
Windows
- Activate the Edge window.
- Press F11 to toggle full screen.
- Press F11 again to leave it. Microsoft also documents Esc as an exit control while Edge is fullscreen.
Try Fn+F11 if your laptop treats the function row as media keys. The current Microsoft shortcut list is on the Edge keyboard shortcuts page.

macOS
- Press Control+Command+F (Microsoft also writes this as Command+Control+F).
- Repeat it to leave fullscreen, or press Esc when Edge’s fullscreen view accepts that control.
The macOS app mode and Edge’s browser presentation can look alike without being technically identical.
Use Edge’s menu
Open Settings and more (…) and find the fullscreen control near Zoom. The icon and placement can change with Edge interface updates.
Use fullscreen in Firefox
Menu method
- Select the menu button in the upper-right corner.
- Select the fullscreen control (the icon with outward-facing corners).
- To leave fullscreen, move the pointer to the top edge to reveal Firefox’s toolbar and tabs, then select the exit-fullscreen control.
Keyboard method
On desktop Firefox, try F11; compact keyboards may require Fn+F11. Mozilla’s help page describes the menu route and the top-edge reveal at How to make Firefox and websites go full screen. Shortcut wording can vary by operating system and keyboard, so do not treat one combination as universal on macOS.

Use fullscreen in Safari on a Mac
- Open Safari and press Control+Command+F to enter macOS app fullscreen.
- Press the same keys again to leave it.
- Safari documents Esc for exiting full-screen view in supported situations.
Safari may continue showing some controls according to its fullscreen toolbar setting. Apple’s references are Mac keyboard shortcuts and Safari keyboard shortcuts and gestures.
Make a video, game, or presentation fullscreen
- Start the media or interactive content.
- Move the pointer over it to reveal the controls.
- Select the fullscreen icon, usually four corners pointing outward.
- Press Esc or select the same icon to return.
This enlarges the webpage element, not necessarily the entire browser window. If no button is visible, right-click the player or open its options menu; some sites simply do not offer fullscreen.
Websites use the Fullscreen API to request fullscreen for a particular element. A page can call Element.requestFullscreen() and leave it with Document.exitFullscreen(), but browser support, permissions, embedding rules, and security policy apply.

What to expect while fullscreen is active
- Tabs, the address bar, and bookmarks may disappear.
- Moving the pointer to the top edge can temporarily reveal controls, especially in Firefox.
- Esc may close content fullscreen first and browser fullscreen second when both layers are active.
- Web-content fullscreen can end when a page navigates or reloads, you change tabs, or you switch applications.
- A browser may show a brief security notification when a page enters web-content fullscreen.
Fullscreen troubleshooting
F11 does nothing
- Click the browser window and try again.
- Try Fn+F11; check the keyboard’s function-row or “Action Keys” setting.
- Use the browser menu’s fullscreen command.
- Test the key in another application. An operating-system utility, remote-desktop client, accessibility tool, or manufacturer program may have captured it.
- On a managed school or work device, policy may restrict browser behavior.
- Desktop shortcuts do not apply to phones and may differ on Chromebooks, which often have a dedicated fullscreen key.
Esc exits the video but not the browser
The player and browser can be separate fullscreen layers. Press Esc again, press F11 (or Fn+F11), or use the browser menu.
The toolbar disappeared
- Move the pointer to the top edge of the screen.
- Press Esc.
- Press F11, or Fn+F11 on a laptop.
- When the toolbar reappears, use the browser menu’s exit control.
The site refuses to enter fullscreen
A request can fail when it was not triggered by a user action, the page or an iframe lacks permission, the browser does not support the needed API, an embedding policy blocks the fullscreen feature, or protected media disallows the transition. The Fullscreen API reference describes these limits and reports fullscreenerror when a request fails.

Navigation, reloads, tab or application switching, an expired user gesture, an extension, or a security policy can end fullscreen. Developers can monitor fullscreenchange and fullscreenerror; users should first try the player or browser menu again after making a direct click.

The browser is fullscreen but the video is still small
Browser fullscreen removes the frame around the page; it does not resize every element. Select the video’s own fullscreen button, or use zoom if the page itself needs to be larger.
Is fullscreen safe?
Fullscreen hides browser interface elements, including visual cues that normally help identify a site. A malicious page can therefore resemble a desktop application. Know the exit shortcut before entering fullscreen, leave with Esc or F11 if anything looks suspicious, and verify the site before entering credentials or downloading files. Do not disable fullscreen warnings merely to remove the notice.

Platform limits and special cases
- Windows: Function keys can be shared with hardware controls, and remapping software or remote sessions can intercept F11.
- macOS: Control+Command+F is an app-level shortcut, not a universal web-content command. Safari, Chrome, Edge, and Firefox can expose different controls.
- Linux: F11 is conventional, but a desktop environment, window manager, Wayland/X11 configuration, or key remapper may override it.
- Chromebooks and tablets: Keyboard layouts and dedicated fullscreen keys vary. Android and iOS browsers use device-specific controls rather than desktop F11.
- Multiple monitors: Fullscreen generally affects the display containing the browser window, but exact placement depends on the operating system and browser.
A quick decision path
- Need the whole browser without chrome? Use the browser shortcut or menu above.
- Need only a video, game, or presentation larger? Use its fullscreen icon.
- Lost the controls? Try the top edge, Esc, F11, or Fn+F11.
- Trying to read larger text? Use zoom or accessibility settings instead.
- Does a site refuse? The request may lack a user gesture, permission, browser support, or iframe policy.
