The May 2025 video that appeared to show an iPhone 17 Air surviving repeated hand-bending was encouraging, but it was not a definitive durability test. The object was reportedly a dummy or mock-up, not a verified production phone, and the clip supplied no force measurements, controlled fixture or repeatable method. Apple’s retail device, launched as iPhone Air in September 2025, has since produced substantially stronger evidence of bend resistance—without proving that it is immune to drops, crushing, glass damage or water intrusion.

What the leaked video actually showed

Leaker Majin Bu posted the clip on May 23, 2025; the original report appeared on May 30. It was described as an iPhone 17 Air dummy unit. A demonstrator repeatedly applied force by hand, and the object appeared not to deform noticeably. Its exterior broadly matched other leaked images, which supported resemblance to the rumored design but did not establish that its internal construction matched a finished phone. The unit’s identity and engineering could not be independently verified. Laptop Mag’s report therefore treated the result as suggestive rather than conclusive.

Why a dummy-unit bend test cannot settle the question

Accessory makers commonly use pre-release dummies to check dimensions and case fit. Those models can be built from solid metal, resin, plastic or other simplified materials and may omit the components that determine how a real phone carries load.

  • A dummy may contain no display, battery, logic board, cameras, magnets or speakers.
  • Its mass distribution, wall thickness and internal supports can differ from a production device.
  • A solid block can resist bending very differently from a layered assembly containing glass, adhesives, a battery and circuit boards.
  • A case-fitting mock-up can be dimensionally accurate without reproducing the retail phone’s structural architecture.

That is why “the dummy passed a bend test” is not equivalent to “the iPhone Air passed a standardized bend test.” The clip also lacked a measured force, defined failure point, before-and-after inspection, sample count and independent verification of the model.

What a meaningful bend test would require

A stronger assessment would identify production-intent hardware, document the model where possible and apply a known load in a controlled direction. It would report the force and define what counts as failure.

  1. Use a confirmed retail or production-intent phone and record its condition before testing.
  2. Mount it in a fixture that controls support points, angle and force direction.
  3. Measure the applied force instead of relying on visual effort.
  4. Check for permanent chassis deformation, cracked glass, display or camera failure, battery damage, and loss of water resistance.
  5. Repeat the procedure on multiple samples and disclose whether a case, screen protector or other accessory was fitted.

A hand demonstration can show that a phone is not trivially flexible. It cannot establish a precise failure threshold or predict every real-world failure mode.

Why “bendgate” comparisons returned

The iPhone 6 Plus became associated with “bendgate” after 2014 videos showed that substantial hand pressure could permanently bend some phones. A handset around 5.5–5.6 mm thick naturally revived that concern. The comparison is useful historical context, but the iPhone Air and iPhone 6 Plus do not necessarily share materials, dimensions, internal layouts or load paths. Thinness creates an engineering challenge; it does not by itself determine bending strength.

What Apple ultimately shipped

Apple introduced the product as iPhone Air on September 9–10, 2025, rather than iPhone 17 Air. Apple’s specifications list a 5.64 mm (0.22-inch) body, 165 g (5.82 oz) weight and a titanium frame. The phone uses Ceramic Shield 2 on the front and Ceramic Shield on the back, and carries an IP68 rating under IEC 60529. Apple describes the frame as exceeding its bend-strength requirements. See Apple’s launch announcement and technical specifications.

IP68 means laboratory-tested resistance to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under controlled conditions. Apple warns that water resistance can decrease through normal wear and that liquid damage is not covered by its warranty. It is not a promise that the phone is waterproof or safe to submerge indefinitely.

How the retail phone’s evidence compares

Evidence What it shows Limitations
Leaked dummy video A purported mock-up appeared to resist repeated hand force. Unverified construction; no force measurement, fixture or repeatable protocol. Source.
Apple demonstration Apple said the titanium frame exceeded its bend-strength requirements; reporting described more than 130 pounds of applied force without damage. Manufacturer-selected demonstration, not an independent laboratory standard. MacRumors report.
Media hands-on attempts Reviewers applying significant manual force generally described the retail phone as sturdy and resistant to visible bending. Tester, leverage, angle, duration and force vary. TechRadar review.
Teardown analysis iFixit’s reported layout places the logic board in a configuration intended to reduce bending stress; the titanium frame was described as highly resistant. Teardown provides architectural context, not a statistical durability study. MacRumors coverage.
Independent destructive test A later JerryRigEverything-style attempt reportedly required substantial force before serious failure. One sample and one protocol cannot guarantee consistency across all units. Reported test.

Taken together, the retail evidence is much stronger than the leak. It supports the narrower conclusion that iPhone Air is highly resistant to ordinary hand-bending in reported tests. It does not retroactively validate the dummy-unit clip.

What bend resistance still does not prove

  • Elastic flex is not permanent bending: a phone may flex and return to shape while components still experience stress.
  • Frame survival is not complete-device survival: glass, display, battery, camera, adhesive or wireless parts can fail while the chassis looks straight.
  • Bend and drop tests are different: a corner impact or point load can crack glass without bending the frame.
  • Water resistance is separate: a crack, repair or normal wear can reduce sealing even when the phone remains rigid.
  • One sample is not a reliability distribution: a successful demonstration cannot establish manufacturing consistency across millions of devices.

Potential everyday damage includes corner-cracked glass, display failure, battery deformation or puncture under crushing pressure, dents and scratches in the titanium rails, damage around thicker camera transitions, and hidden internal faults that appear later.

Should buyers worry about bending?

The leak alone was not a sound reason either to buy or reject the phone. The final iPhone Air’s titanium structure, controlled manufacturer demonstration, teardown findings, hands-on reports and later independent testing make ordinary hand-bending a relatively reassuring part of the durability picture.

Risk is more practical than spectacular: sitting on the phone, trapping it in a tight pocket, placing it under hard objects in a bag, or applying one-sided pressure. A case adds protection against drops, edge impacts, torsion and pocket pressure, although it removes some of the thinness advantage. Apple lists an iPhone Air Case with MagSafe and iPhone Air Bumper. A bumper leaves more of the front and back exposed, so it is a weaker choice for frequent drops.

AppleCare+ (and AppleCare One in the United States) addresses accidental-damage service rather than preventing damage; prices, fees and eligibility vary by country and plan. Screen protectors from brands such as Belkin or ZAGG can reduce scratches and help with some minor impacts, but they do not make the phone drop-proof.

Verdict

The leaked video tested the wrong thing for a definitive conclusion: an unverified dummy, not a production iPhone. The retail iPhone Air later supplied substantially better evidence that Apple engineered strong bend resistance into a 5.64 mm titanium phone. That is reassuring for normal handling, but buyers should still protect the glass, account for drops and crushing pressure, and treat IP68 as conditional laboratory resistance rather than waterproofing.
