WordPress reCAPTCHA is not a single WordPress setting. It is Google’s separate anti-abuse service connected through a form plugin, a dedicated WordPress plugin, a WooCommerce extension, or custom code. The correct setup depends on the form you need to protect and the abuse you are seeing.

Use v2 checkbox when a visible challenge is acceptable, v3 when you can apply score-based rules, and Enterprise when traffic, analytics, fraud controls, or support justify added complexity. Protect high-value actions rather than loading CAPTCHA on every page.

What reCAPTCHA does—and what it does not do

Google reCAPTCHA analyzes browser and request signals to distinguish likely people from automated traffic. A website key is used in the browser; the resulting token is then verified by a trusted server-side integration. Google documents this frontend-token and backend-verification model at its web setup guide.

It can reduce automated submissions, registrations and login attempts, but it is only one defensive layer. Continue using strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, rate limits, web-application-firewall rules, software updates, comment moderation and payment or email fraud controls.

WordPress core has no universal reCAPTCHA switch. Support normally comes from a form builder, a general plugin, a WooCommerce extension or custom development. The official plugin directory contains integrations with different coverage and maintenance histories: Google reCAPTCHA listings.

Choose v2, v3 or Enterprise

Option User experience Best fit Main limitation
v2 checkbox Visible “I’m not a robot” interaction; may trigger image, audio or mobile challenges Contact, login and registration forms where an obvious pass/fail step is useful Adds friction and can create accessibility or browser-compatibility issues
v3 Usually no visible challenge; returns a risk score Developers handling login, signup, checkout and other actions with different policies A score does nothing unless the integration verifies it and chooses an action
Enterprise Advanced risk analysis and commercial controls Large or high-volume services needing analytics, fraud signals or support More account and billing complexity; potentially paid above the allowance

Google describes standard reCAPTCHA as free for ordinary use. Its FAQ states that Enterprise includes up to 10,000 assessments per month at no cost, while non-Enterprise usage has documented thresholds of 1,000 queries per second and 1,000,000 calls per month per domain. Quotas and commercial terms can change, so verify the current Google FAQ before committing.

When v3 is appropriate

A low v3 score is a signal, not proof of abuse. Your site or plugin might allow the request, require additional verification, delay it, moderate it or reject it. A plugin that merely displays a score without enforcing a policy provides little practical protection.

Create the correct Google keys

  1. Sign in to Google’s current reCAPTCHA administration or Enterprise setup interface.
  2. Create a website key and select v2, v3 or Enterprise according to your integration.
  3. Enter the hostname, not a URL path. Do not include a port, query string or fragment.
  4. Save the key and copy the public site key and private secret key, or the Enterprise credentials required by your integration.
  5. Store the secret only in a trusted plugin configuration or server-side environment. Never publish it in theme JavaScript or client-side HTML.

Google restricts a key to its registered domain and subdomains. Add separate staging hostnames when needed; “www” and non-“www” may both need registration. Google says domain changes can take up to 30 minutes to take effect: domain settings documentation. Console labels differ between standard reCAPTCHA and Enterprise, so follow the labels shown in your account.

Add reCAPTCHA without writing code

General plugin workflow

  1. Create a backup or confirm that a restore point exists.
  2. Go to WordPress Admin → Plugins → Add New.
  3. Check the candidate plugin’s last update, WordPress compatibility, active installations, documentation and support activity.
  4. Install and activate it, then open its settings page.
  5. Select the supported reCAPTCHA type and enter the matching site and secret keys.
  6. Select only the forms that need protection.
  7. Save, clear relevant caches and test while logged out in a private browser window.

WordPress recommends evaluating update recency, compatibility, documentation and support when choosing anti-spam plugins: WordPress comment-spam guidance. For example, the listing for reCaptcha by BestWebSoft advertises login, registration, password recovery, comments, contact and custom-form support, but that listing is not a guarantee for every theme or builder.

Form-builder integrations

Use a form builder’s native integration when it covers the exact form and reCAPTCHA version you selected. Contact Form 7 users may instead use an add-on or a general anti-spam plugin. Choose one method and verify that the token is attached to the submitted form, not merely loaded somewhere on the page.

WooCommerce

A WooCommerce extension commonly adds a menu such as WordPress Admin → WooCommerce → Settings → reCAPTCHA, but the path is extension-specific. Enter the keys and version, then select the required account and checkout forms. Coverage can include WordPress login and registration, WooCommerce login, registration and lost password, guest checkout, checkout login, payment-method addition, pay-for-order, reviews and order tracking. See the extension documentation at WooCommerce reCAPTCHA and Google reCAPTCHA setup.

Do not assume protection on classic checkout also covers Checkout Blocks, express-payment buttons or custom account templates. Confirm each flow in the extension’s documentation and test it yourself.

Where to enable protection

Start with actions that attract abuse or have meaningful security or business consequences:

  • WordPress login, registration and lost-password forms
  • Contact, newsletter and lead forms
  • Comments and product reviews
  • WooCommerce account, checkout and payment-related actions

Do not automatically add CAPTCHA to every page, static content, search forms or unrelated admin screens. Loading it site-wide can add external requests and privacy or performance overhead. Selective loading is preferable when the plugin supports it.

Test before relying on it

  • Submit each protected form while logged out and in a private window.
  • Test valid and deliberately invalid submissions, including a missing or expired token.
  • Check desktop and mobile browsers, with JavaScript enabled.
  • Test the consent banner both before and after consent, plus caching, CDN and script-optimization settings.
  • For stores, test guest and logged-in checkout, coupons, saved payment methods, express payments and failed-payment recovery.
  • Confirm that legitimate messages, registrations and orders still arrive and that rejected requests are visible in the relevant logs or moderation queue.

Fix common reCAPTCHA failures

Invalid key or domain

Match the provider, key type, integration and hostname. A v2 key cannot replace a v3 key. Register the exact staging or production hostname, omit paths and ports, and allow up to 30 minutes after a domain change.

The widget does not appear

Check browser JavaScript, privacy extensions, consent tools, content-security-policy rules, CDN or firewall filters, stale cached HTML and aggressive script delays. A consent manager that blocks the reCAPTCHA library can prevent rendering or validation.

The form spins or never submits

Open the browser console and network panel for JavaScript errors, duplicate callbacks or failed requests. Disable one optimization at a time, purge caches and ensure only one integration owns the form.

Duplicate badge or repeated challenges

Remove overlapping integrations, such as a form builder’s native reCAPTCHA plus a global CAPTCHA plugin or a WooCommerce extension plus a security plugin injecting another widget.

v3 appears to do nothing

This is normal visually: v3 is score-based. Confirm that the token is verified server-side, the score is received, and the plugin applies a documented allow, challenge, moderation or rejection rule.

Legitimate visitors are blocked

Review browser and mobile behavior, accessibility, privacy extensions, consent settings, CSP, firewall rules, script optimization and cached keys. Google’s help center documents visual and audio alternatives for some verification flows: reCAPTCHA Help.

Spam continues

CAPTCHA does not stop human-powered abuse, JavaScript-capable bots, direct endpoint requests, credential stuffing or payment fraud by itself. Add rate limits, MFA, WAF rules, moderation and fraud monitoring.

Privacy, accessibility and performance

Google says reCAPTCHA sets a necessary _GRECAPTCHA cookie when it executes for risk analysis. Review Google’s current terms, your jurisdiction’s consent requirements and your privacy-policy disclosure. Google suggests www.recaptcha.net when a site owner wants to avoid the www.google.com domain; this does not remove the need to assess consent and data handling.

Do not make an unconditional legal claim that reCAPTCHA is or is not compliant. Configure your consent tool so blocked scripts fail gracefully, and test keyboard, screen-reader, audio and mobile experiences. Limit scripts to the pages and forms that need them, and avoid loading multiple CAPTCHA libraries.

When Turnstile, hCaptcha or non-CAPTCHA protection is better

Cloudflare Turnstile

Turnstile uses a browser widget to produce a token that your server validates through Cloudflare’s Siteverify API. It can suit sites seeking a Google alternative or already using Cloudflare, provided the chosen WordPress integration covers every required form. Documentation: Turnstile setup and migration from reCAPTCHA.

hCaptcha

hCaptcha is another major provider with challenge-based integrations. Choose it when its privacy, geographic or vendor requirements fit your site and a maintained integration supports the forms you actually use. Do not assume it is always faster, more private or more effective; those outcomes depend on configuration and current policies.

Non-CAPTCHA controls

For contact or comment spam, honeypots, moderation, link limits, rate limiting and a dedicated anti-spam service may reduce friction more effectively. WordPress documents moderation, disallowed terms, link limits and disabling comments as available controls.

Decision guide

  • One contact form: use the form builder’s maintained integration or a reputable free plugin; enable protection only on that form.
  • Several WordPress forms: compare a general plugin with native integrations and verify each builder’s coverage.
  • WooCommerce abuse: use a store-specific extension only after confirming guest checkout, Checkout Blocks and payment-flow support.
  • No visible challenge: consider v3, invisible v2 or Turnstile, but test accessibility and enforcement behavior.
  • High-volume or fraud-sensitive service: evaluate Enterprise or a broader managed bot and fraud service.
