Snapchat does not provide a guaranteed, universal exact “last online” time for every friend. The best built-in clue is the green Activity Indicator, which means Snapchat considers the person active recently—not necessarily online now. Snap Map can show when shared location data was last refreshed, but that is a different signal from app activity.
Check the green Activity Indicator
Open Snapchat and go to the Chat or friends area. Look at the friend’s avatar. A green dot means Snapchat says that account has been active recently. Snapchat does not define the dot as proof that the person is currently using the app, reading your chat, or available to reply. The account holder can disable it. See Snapchat’s explanation of the green dot.
Do not rely on claims that the dot always represents a fixed period such as 24 hours. Snapchat’s documented wording is “active recently,” and the exact display can vary by app version, account and region.
Check Snap Map for location freshness
- From the Camera screen, swipe right twice to open Snap Map, as described in Snapchat Support.
- Find the friend’s Bitmoji or search for the friend.
- Tap the Bitmoji or profile to review any location, time, battery or recent-action information shown.
Snap Map only works when the friend shares location with you and the relevant friendship and permission conditions are met. Location sharing is off by default; users can manage it through Snap Map sharing settings and selected-friend controls.

A Map time means that location information was last available or refreshed. It does not establish when the person last opened Snapchat, is typing, or is viewing your messages. Snapchat also lets friends view location and recent Map-linked actions in Chat when sharing is enabled: viewing a friend’s location and actions.
Why activity and Map times disagree
| What you see | What it represents |
|---|---|
| Green dot | Recent Snapchat activity, not guaranteed current presence. |
| Map time | Last available or refreshed location data. |
| “Now” on the Map | Current or recently refreshed location information, not proof of active chat use. |
| Actionmoji or Bitmoji pose | Contextual Map information that can be stale; it is not a reliable online indicator. See Snapchat’s Actionmoji guide. |
| No status | The feature may be disabled, private, expired, unavailable, or not yet synchronized. |
With device location set to Only while using, Snapchat retains the last location and normally does not update it after the app closes until Snapchat is opened again. With background or “Always” sharing, selected recipients may continue receiving location updates after the app closes. These behaviors and their availability depend on device permissions and account settings: Snap Map privacy and safety.
When “Only while using” is enabled, Snapchat says Map location expires after 24 hours. That is a location-visibility rule, not evidence that the person has been inactive for 24 hours: location expiration details.

Why you may not see a friend’s status
- They turned off Activity Indicator.
- Snapchat does not currently classify the account as recently active.
- They use Ghost Mode or restrict location sharing.
- Location sharing expired or is set to a limited audience.
- You are not mutual friends, or the person removed, blocked or restricted you.
- The app is showing a different interface because of platform, account, region or version differences.
- A temporary cache or synchronization problem is delaying the display.
A missing green dot does not prove that someone is offline or has blocked you. Likewise, a visible dot or Map update does not prove they are ignoring you or have seen a message.
Turn off your own Activity Indicator
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap the gear to open Settings.
- Scroll to App & Privacy, then tap My Privacy & Data.
- Under Privacy Choices, tap Activity Indicator.
- Toggle it off.
Menu names can change. If the path differs, search Snapchat Settings for “Activity Indicator.” The setting controls whether other Snapchatters can see that you have been active recently: Snapchat privacy settings.
Hide your location separately
Turning off Activity Indicator does not turn off Snap Map. To manage location, open Snap Map, tap the gear, and choose the visibility option you need, such as Ghost Mode, My Friends, Except…, or Only These Friends. You can also change Snapchat’s location permission in your phone’s system settings. Details are in Snapchat’s privacy reminder and selected-friend sharing instructions.

Ghost Mode hides normal location sharing, but it does not necessarily remove public Snaps submitted to public Map surfaces. Review Activity Indicator and location controls independently.
Can a third-party app reveal hidden Snapchat activity?
No legitimate method should be recommended. Avoid “last seen trackers,” browser extensions, modified Snapchat clients, or sites asking for your Snapchat password, payment, downloads, surveys or “human verification.” They can be phishing or malware, violate Snapchat’s rules, and expose your account. Use only Snapchat’s own Activity Indicator, Chat or profile information, and Snap Map permissions.

- Best answer to “Have they used Snapchat recently?” The green Activity Indicator, if enabled and shown.
- Best answer to “When was their location last available?” The timestamp or freshness information on Snap Map.
- Exact universal last-online time: Snapchat does not guarantee one for every friend.
- Current availability or message attention: Neither a green dot nor a Map status proves it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Snapchat show the exact last time someone was online?
Not universally. Snapchat may show recent activity or Map information, but the green dot has no exact time and Map timestamps refer to location data, not necessarily last app use.

Does the green dot mean someone is online now?
No. It means Snapchat considers the person active recently. They may have closed the app or disabled other visibility features.
Does Snap Map update when Snapchat is closed?
With “Only while using” permission, the last location normally remains until Snapchat is reopened. Background or “Always” sharing can update for selected recipients after the app closes.
Does turning off location hide the green dot?
No. Activity Indicator and Snap Map location are separate privacy controls.
Does no green dot mean I was blocked?
No. It can be disabled, unavailable, delayed, restricted by friendship settings, or absent because Snapchat does not classify the person as recently active.
