To save the entire screen as an image in Windows 8, press Windows logo key + PrtSc. The screenshot is saved as a PNG in your account’s PicturesScreenshots folder, according to Dynabook’s Windows 8 instructions. To copy a screenshot instead, press PrtSc and paste it into an app; use Alt + PrtSc to copy the active window. For a selected area, use Snipping Tool if it is available on your PC.
Choose the capture method you need
The quickest choice depends on what you want to capture and where you want the result to go. Windows + PrtSc saves a whole-screen image directly. PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc copy an image to the clipboard, so you can paste it into another program. Snipping Tool is the option for selecting a smaller part of the screen.
| Method | What it captures | Where the result goes | Windows-version note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows + PrtSc | Whole screen | PNG in PicturesScreenshots | Windows 8-specific instructions from Dynabook |
| PrtSc | Whole screen | Clipboard; paste into an app | Microsoft’s instructions are general Windows guidance, not specific to Windows 8 |
| Alt + PrtSc | Active window | Clipboard; paste into an app | Microsoft’s instructions are general Windows guidance, not specific to Windows 8 |
| Snipping Tool | A selected area, window or screen, depending on the available mode | Work with the snip, then save or copy it | Microsoft’s current guide covers Windows 10 and 11; Windows 8 may have a different interface or available options |
Save a full-screen screenshot as a file
- Show the screen you want to capture.
- Press the Windows logo key + PrtSc together. On a laptop where Print Screen shares a key, you may need to hold Fn as well; check the key labels or the laptop’s instructions.
- Open Pictures, then open Screenshots. Look for the PNG image there.
This shortcut captures the whole screen and saves a file. The Windows 8-specific Dynabook instructions identify the output as PNG in PicturesScreenshots. If your Pictures folder has been redirected or customized, its actual location can differ; open Pictures from your account rather than assuming it is in a particular drive or folder.
Copy the screen or active window to the clipboard
Use the clipboard method when you want to paste the image directly into a document, email, chat or image editor rather than first locating a saved file.

- Press PrtSc to copy the whole screen, or press Alt + PrtSc to copy the active window.
- Switch to the program where you want to use the image.
- Press Ctrl + V to paste it.
- If you need a separate image file, use the destination program’s save or export command.
Microsoft documents these as clipboard actions: Print Screen does not, by itself, mean a file was saved. Its Copy the window or screen contents page is current general Windows guidance rather than a Windows 8-specific support page, so treat it as guidance for the clipboard workflow, not proof that every keyboard behaves identically.
Capture a selected area or window with Snipping Tool
For a screenshot of only part of the display, find Snipping Tool from the Windows 8 Start screen and open it if it is available. Take the snip using the choices shown by your version of the tool, then save or copy the result from the tool.
- Go to the Start screen and search for Snipping Tool.
- Open the result. If it does not appear, check the applications available on that PC; do not assume that a modern Windows shortcut or interface will work on Windows 8.
- Choose an available capture mode, such as a rectangular or window capture, and make the selection.
- Use the tool’s save command to create an image file, or copy the snip if you want to paste it into another app.
Microsoft describes freeform, rectangular, window and full-screen snips, along with saving and copying, in its current Snipping Tool guide. That guide explicitly covers Windows 10 and Windows 11, not Windows 8. Its description is useful for understanding the kinds of captures the tool can make, but do not rely on its newer shortcuts or exact interface labels for Windows 8.

Where to find the screenshot
- Used Windows + PrtSc: Check PicturesScreenshots for the PNG, following the Windows 8-specific Dynabook instructions.
- Used PrtSc or Alt + PrtSc: The capture is on the clipboard. Paste it into an app; there may be no new file in Pictures to find.
- Used Snipping Tool: Save the snip from the tool if you need a file. If you copied it, paste it into another application.
If Pictures is not where you expect, the Windows 8 instructions establish the standard folder name, not the location of a customized or redirected Pictures folder. Use the Pictures location configured for your signed-in account.
Troubleshoot common screenshot problems
Nothing seems to happen after pressing PrtSc
PrtSc usually copies an image rather than opening a window or saving a file. Open an app that can accept pasted images and try Ctrl + V. To save directly using the Windows 8 shortcut, use Windows + PrtSc instead.
The keyboard has no separate PrtSc key
Look for a secondary Print Screen label on another key and try the laptop’s documented Fn combination. Some keyboards require Fn; one Microsoft-hosted Windows 8 community response mentions Windows + Fn + PrintScreen, but that is not universal keyboard documentation. Check the instructions for your particular laptop rather than assuming that combination applies to every device. See the Microsoft Q&A thread for the community-reported variant.

You cannot find a screenshot file
First check which method you used. Windows + PrtSc is the file-saving method described for Windows 8; PrtSc and Alt + PrtSc are clipboard workflows in Microsoft’s general guidance. If you used the saving shortcut, open your account’s Pictures folder and look for Screenshots. A redirected Pictures folder can put it somewhere other than the location you expect.
You need only one window, but the screenshot includes the whole screen
Use Alt + PrtSc to copy the active window, then paste it into an application. Confirm the intended window is active before pressing the keys.
You need only part of the display
Try Snipping Tool from the Start screen and use a selection mode available in your copy. If the tool is absent or its controls differ from current instructions, do not substitute Windows + Shift + S based on a Windows 10/11 guide: the cited Microsoft page documents those newer versions, not Windows 8.
