To view a saved HTML file, open the .html or .htm file in a desktop browser. You can usually double-click it in Finder or File Explorer, or choose it from the browser’s Open File dialog. Microsoft Edge documents Ctrl+O on Windows and Linux and Command+O on macOS.
Open the file from your computer
- Find the saved file in Finder on macOS or File Explorer on Windows. Check that its name ends in
.htmlor.htm. - Double-click the file. If your computer has a browser associated with that file type, it should open there and display the page.
- If it opens in an editor or another app instead, use the operating system’s Open with option to choose a browser, or open the file from the browser itself.
In Edge, use Ctrl+O on Windows or Linux, or Command+O on macOS. Choose the HTML file in the file picker and open it. Those shortcuts are documented for Edge; shortcuts and menu labels can differ in other browsers or operating systems.
What the browser is showing
The browser renders the HTML as a page: headings, text, links, images, and styling appear as they would on a website. It does not normally display the HTML markup as plain text. When opened directly from your device in Edge, the address bar shows a local address beginning with file:///. That indicates the browser is opening a file on your computer rather than a page fetched from a website.
Viewing the rendered page and inspecting its underlying structure are different tasks. To inspect the page while it is running, use the browser’s developer tools. Edge DevTools can inspect page resources and source; developer tools can also show runtime HTML and applied CSS.

If the file does not open as expected
The wrong app opens
Use your computer’s Open with command to select a browser, or use the browser’s Open File dialog and choose the file directly. Exact steps and labels depend on the operating system.
The file opens as text or looks like source code
Check the filename and extension. It should end in .html or .htm, not a text-file extension such as .txt. If your file manager hides extensions, inspect the full filename in its file information or rename controls before changing it. Renaming an extension does not turn plain text into a complete web page, but it can help if the file was saved with the wrong ending.

The page appears blank or incomplete
First confirm that you opened the intended file and that it has content. If it is a project demo rather than a self-contained static page, direct file opening may not provide the same context as a website. A local server can be useful for development demos or projects that need to be visited through a localhost address; it is not a prerequisite for simply opening every HTML file. Microsoft’s DevTools sample workflow uses a localhost server for its demo.
Use developer tools to inspect runtime HTML, applied CSS, and page resources when you need to diagnose what the browser loaded. The need for a server depends on the particular project; not every HTML page behaves identically when opened as a file:/// URL.

Use an editor preview or a local server when useful

Visual Studio Code is optional: you do not need it just to view an HTML file. Its documentation describes opening local .html and .htm pages in the integrated browser and selecting an external browser. This can be convenient while editing, but opening the saved file directly is simpler if you only want to see the page.
Serve a project on localhost
Choose a local-server workflow when you are following a development demo or the project expects a server context. Start the server using the instructions for that project, then visit the localhost address it provides in your browser. A server is an alternative development workflow, not a required step for a basic static HTML file.

What about opening HTML on a phone?
The verified instructions here cover desktop file managers and Edge shortcuts, not a complete set of mobile steps. On phones and tablets, the way to locate a downloaded HTML file and open it in a browser varies by operating system, browser, and file app. If you need a dependable desktop preview, transfer the file to a computer and use the file-opening steps above; if it is part of a development project, use that project’s documented preview or localhost workflow.
