On a Chromebook, press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows to open Screen capture, choose the partial screenshot mode, and drag over the area you want. In Chrome on Android, use More > Share… > Long screenshot and adjust the crop handles. These are different platform-specific workflows—not one universal Chrome shortcut for every computer.
Choose the workflow that matches your device
“Partial screenshot” can mean capturing a selected area of the screen you are viewing, while a “long screenshot” captures more of a scrolling webpage than fits on screen. The documented ChromeOS workflow is for selecting a region. Chrome for Android offers a Long screenshot crop flow for a page; Android also has its own scrolling-screenshot feature.

The available instructions differ by platform. Google’s documented Chromebook shortcut should not be treated as a universal shortcut for desktop Chrome on Windows, macOS, or Linux.
Take a partial screenshot on a Chromebook
- Press Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. The Show windows key is the Chromebook key used to display open windows; Google’s screenshot and screen-recording guide documents this shortcut for opening Screen capture.
- In the Screen capture controls, choose the option for a partial screenshot (a selected region), rather than a full-screen capture.
- Drag the pointer to mark the area you want. Release the pointer when the selection is complete, or confirm the selection if the interface asks you to.
- Find the result in the folder selected for screenshots. Google says screenshots are added to the selected folder and describes Downloads as the default location.
You can also open Screen capture from the shelf clock menu instead of using the keyboard shortcut. This is useful if the key combination is inconvenient or you prefer to open the capture controls with the pointer.

Use a Chromebook stylus to select a region
If your Chromebook supports a stylus, open the stylus menu and select Capture region. Touch and hold the screen, drag around the area, and release. Google documents this as an optional stylus workflow; a stylus is not required for a partial screenshot. See Google’s Chromebook stylus instructions.
Capture a long screenshot in Chrome on Android
Chrome for Android’s Long screenshot flow is designed to capture a longer page and let you choose the crop. It is not the same interaction as dragging a small rectangle around only the currently visible screen.
- Open the webpage in Chrome on your Android device.
- Tap More > Share… > Long screenshot.
- Adjust the crop handles to include the part of the page you need.
- Tap Confirm. You can then share or save the result.
The labels and route above are from Google’s Chrome for Android sharing instructions. This is a mobile Chrome workflow, not a keyboard shortcut to use on desktop Chrome.

Use Android’s system scrolling screenshot instead
If you want to capture a scrolling screen rather than use Chrome’s page-sharing flow, Android provides a separate system method. On Android 12 and later, Google says scrolling screenshots work on most screens that allow scrolling:
- Take a screenshot using your device’s screenshot controls.
- Tap Capture more when that option appears.
- Use the crop guidelines to include the desired part of the screen.
Availability depends on the screen: Google describes support for most, not all, scrollable screens. See Android Help’s screenshot instructions.
What if you use desktop Chrome?
The official instructions cited here document the Chromebook Screen capture controls and Chrome’s Android Long screenshot flow. They do not establish a universal partial-screen shortcut built into desktop Chrome for Windows, macOS, or Linux. A Chromebook shortcut should not be assumed to work on those systems.

If you are on a desktop computer, first identify whether you need a screenshot of the visible screen, a browser window, or a longer webpage. The first two are screen-capture tasks; the last may require a scrolling capture method. Use the capture controls provided for your operating system or a tool designed for webpage capture, and check that its instructions match your OS and version. This article does not prescribe an unverified Chrome menu path or desktop shortcut.

Troubleshooting
The Chromebook shortcut does not open capture controls
Confirm that you are using a Chromebook and that you pressed Shift + Ctrl + Show windows. If the shortcut is impractical, open Screen capture from the shelf clock menu. The documented shortcut is for ChromeOS, not a general desktop Chrome command.

Choose the partial screenshot option before dragging the selection. If you wanted the whole screen, select the full-screen mode instead. For a precise region on a touchscreen Chromebook, the optional stylus menu’s Capture region action is another input method.
You cannot find the saved Chromebook image
Check the folder selected for screenshots. Downloads is described as the default, but ChromeOS adds captures to the folder selected in the capture controls. If you previously changed that folder, look there rather than assuming every screenshot is in Downloads.

Long screenshot is missing in Chrome for Android
Check that you opened a webpage in Chrome and followed More > Share… > Long screenshot. This is distinct from Android’s system Capture more control, which appears after taking a screenshot on Android 12 or later when the screen supports scrolling. The two flows have different entry points and should not be treated as interchangeable.
The Android crop excludes part of the content
Before confirming, adjust the crop handles to cover the desired portion. For system scrolling screenshots, use the crop guidelines after tapping Capture more. If the content is on a screen that does not allow scrolling capture, Android’s documented support for that system option does not guarantee it will be available.

Which method should you use?
- Select a visible region on a Chromebook: use Screen capture’s partial screenshot mode.
- Capture a longer webpage in Chrome on Android: use the Long screenshot sharing flow and adjust its crop.
- Capture a scrollable Android screen: use the system screenshot flow and tap Capture more when available.
- Use Windows, macOS, or Linux: choose the screen-capture method for that operating system; the Chromebook shortcut is not a universal Chrome shortcut.
- Capture webpages programmatically: consider a webpage screenshot API, bearing in mind that an API capture is not an interactive crop of your current screen.
