Use a 1200 × 630 px image for a Facebook Open Graph link preview. Its aspect ratio is approximately 1.91:1, a practical default for large link cards. The Open Graph protocol does not require those dimensions; they are platform-oriented guidance. Keep important text and logos near the center, and provide the image through an absolute HTTPS URL.

Recommended Facebook OG image dimensions

For a page you expect people to share on Facebook, prepare a 1200 × 630 px image. At that size, the image follows the approximately 1.91:1 proportion recommended by the 2026 OG Image Design guide. It is a useful default when you want a large link preview without designing around a smaller, more square canvas.

Use Dimensions Aspect ratio What to know
Recommended large-card image 1200 × 630 px About 1.91:1 Practical default identified by the 2026 OG Image Design guide.
Practical lower size for a large card 600 × 315 px About 1.90:1 Also identified by that guide; use the larger recommendation when you can.

The same guide reports an 8 MB Facebook file maximum. Treat that as changeable platform guidance, not a rule of the Open Graph protocol. The protocol specifies metadata properties, but does not set a required image width, height, file size or ratio.

Why 1200 × 630 works as a default

Open Graph metadata tells a service which page title, URL and image to associate with a shared page. The Open Graph protocol defines four basic properties: og:title, og:type, og:image and og:url. A 1200 × 630 canvas is a practical Facebook-oriented choice for the image property; it is not a dimension mandated by the protocol.

Its wide format gives a designer room for a title, logo and visual without making the card excessively tall. But the preview is rendered by the platform, and cards or placements can crop differently. A correct source image therefore does not guarantee that every displayed preview will show all four edges.

Design the image to survive cropping

Keep the headline, logo and any other information that must remain visible in a central safe area. Let backgrounds or decorative elements extend to the canvas edges, but avoid placing essential content against the border. Outer-edge content is more exposed to cropping and alternate card layouts, according to the 2026 OG Image Design guide.

  • Design at 1200 × 630 px and check the final exported file dimensions.
  • Keep the main text and brand mark comfortably inside the outer edges.
  • Use the image as a visual preview, not as the only place where the page title or key information appears.
  • Inspect the actual parsed preview after publishing; do not assume that a design file will appear uncropped in every presentation.

If you adapt one image for several social platforms, do not assume all of them use Facebook’s proportion. A different ratio can mean cropping or a separate image is needed. The 1.91:1 recommendation here is for a Facebook-style large link card, not a universal social image standard.

Add the Open Graph tags to your page

Put the tags in the page’s HTML metadata. Replace the sample title, URL, and image URL with values for the page being shared. The image URL should be absolute, use HTTPS, and point to a crawler-friendly raster file such as JPEG or PNG.

<meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="article">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/og-image.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Brief description of the image">

The four basic properties are the title, type, image and URL. The width and height describe the image in pixels; include 1200 and 630 when those are the actual dimensions of the file. The protocol recommends supplying og:image:alt when an image is specified. Its value should describe what is in the image, rather than act as a caption. Keep the width and height tags immediately after the corresponding og:image when practical, following the protocol’s grouped structured-property model.

Use a different image URL and dimensions if a particular page has a different image. In a CMS, check that the template emits page-specific metadata rather than the same title, URL or image on every page. The values in the example are illustrative; they are not valid metadata to copy unchanged for a real page.

Publish and validate the link preview

  1. Prepare and upload the final 1200 × 630 image to a publicly reachable HTTPS URL.
  2. Add the page’s Open Graph tags, including the absolute image URL and its actual pixel dimensions.
  3. Publish the page, then open Facebook’s Object/Sharing Debugger. The Open Graph protocol page identifies it as the official parser and debugger.
  4. Inspect the fetched image, title, description and dimensions. If you change the image or metadata, refresh or re-scrape the page in the debugger, then inspect the preview again.

The debugger matters because a preview depends on what Facebook parses from the live page, not just what appears in your editor. After changing a tag or replacing an image at the same URL, refresh the parsed result before treating an old preview as evidence that the new metadata failed.

Or skip the browser setup

If you also need a screenshot of the page itself for visual QA, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot or PDF from one GET request. It is not a Facebook preview validator: use Facebook’s Object/Sharing Debugger to inspect Facebook’s parsed card. ScreenshotNeo is useful for capturing the source page after you update its metadata.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/page -o shot.webp
  • Cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets are removed before the shot; each step can be turned off.
  • Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits cost nothing; the response includes page-verdict and billing headers.
  • An MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, get page information and capture PDFs.
  • The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Troubleshooting a wrong or missing preview

The preview shows an old image or title

Use Facebook’s Object/Sharing Debugger to refresh or re-scrape the page after changing its tags or image, then inspect the fetched values. Do not rely on a preview generated before the update.

The image does not appear

Check that og:image contains an absolute HTTPS image URL and that it points to a crawler-friendly raster file such as JPEG or PNG. Inspect the parsed result in the debugger to see which image URL Facebook fetched.

The image is cropped

Verify the source file is 1200 × 630 px and move critical text and logos inward. The recommended dimensions cannot prevent every alternate card layout from cropping the edges, so keep essential content in the central safe area.

The image looks stretched or the metadata dimensions are wrong

Confirm the actual file dimensions and make the og:image:width and og:image:height values match them. For the recommended canvas, those values are 1200 and 630, respectively.
