For selected-area screenshots, use Windows key + Shift + S to open Snipping Tool’s capture overlay; captured snips are automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default. To change that behavior or the default folder, open Snipping Tool’s More menu and choose Settings. For a saved image of the entire screen, press Windows key + PrtScn and look in Pictures > Screenshots. A plain PrtScn press is different: it copies the screen to the clipboard rather than directly creating a file.

Choose the screenshot method that matches what you need

Windows 11 has two useful built-in paths, depending on whether you want to capture a region or the whole screen. Snipping Tool supports selected-area and other snips, with automatic saving controlled in its settings. Windows key + PrtScn is the direct keyboard shortcut for a full-screen screenshot saved in Pictures > Screenshots. Microsoft documents both behaviors in its Snipping Tool instructions and its Print Screen shortcut guidance.

What you press or open What it captures Where the image goes
Windows key + Shift + S A selected-area or other Snipping Tool snip Automatically saved to the Screenshots folder by default; the automatic-save behavior and default folder can be changed in Snipping Tool settings.
Windows key + PrtScn The full screen Pictures > Screenshots
PrtScn alone The full screen Clipboard; this shortcut alone does not directly save a file.

Automatically save selected-area screenshots with Snipping Tool

  1. Open Snipping Tool from Start.
  2. Press Windows key + Shift + S to open the snipping overlay, then capture the area or other snip you want.
  3. Find the captured image in the Screenshots folder. Microsoft says captured snips are automatically saved there by default.

If you want to confirm the setting or choose a different default Screenshots folder, open Snipping Tool, select its More menu, then choose Settings. Adjust the automatic-save option or default folder there. The names or layout of settings can vary across app versions, so look for the controls for automatic saving and the default Screenshots folder rather than relying on a particular screen layout.

Save a full-screen screenshot with a keyboard shortcut

  1. Press Windows key + PrtScn.
  2. Open Pictures > Screenshots to find the capture.

This is the simpler choice when you want the whole screen saved as a file without first selecting an area. If your keyboard labels the key differently, look for its Print Screen abbreviation, commonly shown as PrtScn; the documented shortcut is Windows key plus that key.

Why PrtScn may copy instead of saving

Pressing PrtScn by itself is a clipboard workflow. The screen image is copied so you can paste it into an app; the press does not, on its own, create the direct-to-file result of Windows key + PrtScn. Microsoft also describes the clipboard-oriented behavior in its instructions for copying window or screen contents.

If you already pressed PrtScn, you can paste the image into an app that accepts images, open the capture notification in Snipping Tool and save from there, or take another capture with Windows key + PrtScn when you want the full screen written to Pictures > Screenshots.

Change the automatic-save behavior or folder

  1. Open Snipping Tool from Start.
  2. Open the app’s More menu and select Settings.
  3. Adjust the automatic-save behavior or the default Screenshots folder.
  4. Take a new snip and check the folder you selected.

Microsoft’s current support instructions describe these controls under Snipping Tool’s More menu and Settings. If you do not see identical wording, app labels may differ by version; look for the automatic-save and default-folder settings. This changes Snipping Tool’s behavior. For a full-screen capture saved by the Windows key + PrtScn shortcut, the documented destination is Pictures > Screenshots.

Troubleshooting: the screenshot is not where you expected

The capture is on the clipboard, but there is no file

You likely pressed PrtScn alone. Paste into an app, use the Snipping Tool capture notification to save it, or take a new full-screen capture with Windows key + PrtScn.

A Snipping Tool capture did not save automatically

Open Snipping Tool’s More menu, select Settings, and check the automatic-save option. Also check the default Screenshots folder shown there; the snip may have been saved somewhere other than the folder you first checked.

You used Windows key + PrtScn but checked the wrong location

Look in Pictures > Screenshots, the location Microsoft documents for this shortcut. Do not confuse this with the clipboard behavior of PrtScn alone.

You need only part of the screen, but captured everything

Use Windows key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool overlay and capture the desired area instead of using the full-screen Windows key + PrtScn shortcut.

You cannot find the same Settings labels

The layout or labels can vary across Snipping Tool versions. Navigate from the app’s More menu to Settings and look for the automatic-save and default Screenshots folder controls.

For screenshots of webpages, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request website screenshot API; it is not a way to capture the Windows desktop, so use the built-in shortcuts above for ordinary screen captures. The API accepts a URL and returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

Quick Recap

cURL:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and page-information tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. See ScreenshotNeo or sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card.
