No—not as a profession, based on the evidence available. WordPress is making routine site building and editing easier, and AI tools can speed up parts of development. That may reduce the time or specialist help needed for some straightforward sites. But building and maintaining a website also involves understanding requirements, choosing and integrating systems, testing, accessibility, security, performance, and ongoing support. U.S. employment projections still show growth for the broader web developer and digital designer group through 2035; they do not forecast WordPress jobs specifically or measure AI’s causal effect.

What WordPress can now help people do themselves

WordPress’s official roadmap traces a shift from the Block Editor toward Site Editing, with collaboration work underway. Its 2026 goals include responsive styling controls and expanded block tools. Together, these visual workflows make more site-wide changes accessible to owners and editors without requiring them to hand-code every adjustment. WordPress project roadmap

A 2025 WordPress ecosystem report describes Full Site Editing as enabling no-code site building for enterprises, while presenting hybrid architectures as a practical option for more complex sites. That is an industry participant’s account of available approaches, not proof that no-code tools satisfy every organization’s requirements. 2025 WordPress enterprise trends report

The project’s 2026 goals also make AI a priority for creation, workflows, and contribution, with stated guardrails. In a comment on that post, WordPress Executive Director Mary Hubbard said there was no plan for WordPress to use AI automatically or inject it into sites; she described AI as optional and opt-in, surfaced through plugins or themes and kept under the site owner’s control. That statement reflects the project’s position in the context of the 2026 goals, not a guarantee that implementation plans will never change. WordPress project goals for 2026

The 2025 State of the Word recap describes AI coding tools being used to explore codebases, draft documentation, create tests, refactor components, and coordinate WP-CLI tasks. It also discusses Telex, an experimental prompt-to-Gutenberg-block environment, and AI site-generation tools in the ecosystem. These examples show where tools are being tried; they do not establish that generated sites or code are reliably ready for production without review. 2025 State of the Word recap

What the job involves beyond assembling pages

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics describes web-development work that includes discussing client needs, creating and testing applications and interfaces, coding, integrating applications such as checkout tools, choosing appropriate applications, and managing site performance and capacity. Developers also need to keep up with tools and languages. These responsibilities matter because a website can look complete while still failing at a key integration, accessibility requirement, security check, or operational need. BLS: Web developers

WordPress features and AI tools can plausibly take on more routine layout changes, initial drafts, basic page or block generation, and boilerplate code. That is an inference from documented capabilities, not a measured productivity or job-displacement result. The sources do not establish how much time the tools save or how many developer positions they affect.

How to decide whether you need a developer

A visual editor can be a sensible fit when a site uses standard layouts and features, the owner can manage ordinary edits, and the consequences of a mistake are limited. The question is not simply whether WordPress can produce pages without code; it is whether the chosen setup meets the site’s actual requirements and can be operated safely.

Route Often a fit when What to check
Block Editor or Site Editor The site’s layouts and functions are covered by available blocks and themes, and the owner can handle routine content and visual changes. Responsive behavior, accessibility, editing permissions, backups, and whether the design can be maintained without brittle workarounds.
Plugins and configured integrations Established plugins cover the required functions, such as forms, commerce, or other standard services. Compatibility, data flow, updates, security, performance, and who will resolve problems when a plugin or external service changes.
Custom or hybrid development Requirements exceed the available blocks, themes, plugins, or integrations, or the site needs more control over architecture and behavior. Scope, technical ownership, testing, accessibility, security, performance, and a plan for maintenance.

These are decision guides, not a tested threshold or universal ranking. WordPress sources describe both no-code and hybrid approaches, while BLS’s account of the occupation highlights the need to match applications and integrations to client needs. For a simple site, a developer may be unnecessary; for a site with complex workflows or costly failure, professional design and engineering can reduce risk.

What U.S. employment projections do—and do not—say

The BLS projects 5% employment growth for web developers and digital designers combined in the United States from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3% for all occupations. It projects an average of about 13,600 annual openings across that combined group over the same period. These are projections, not guarantees, and the occupational grouping is broader than WordPress development. BLS: Web developers

Within that forecast, BLS projects 4% growth for web developers and 6% for web and digital interface designers from 2025 to 2035. The agency cites e-commerce growth as supporting demand, while noting that better development tools and greater AI use may soften employment growth by making workers more productive and allowing people in other occupations to perform some basic web-development work. The figures do not isolate WordPress roles or quantify AI’s separate effect.

There is not enough directly applicable evidence here to state how much AI has already changed WordPress developer hiring, wages, or job counts. The projections provide useful U.S. context, but they are neither WordPress-specific nor a measurement of AI-caused displacement. Avoid treating them as a promise that every developer’s prospects will improve—or as evidence that a particular number of developers will lose work.

How WordPress developers can stay useful

The practical response is to learn the tools that reduce routine work while strengthening the skills needed to make the finished site fit its purpose. A WordPress.com article by developer Jonathan Bossenger recommends using AI as a productivity aid while retaining human review, testing, and security checks. That is professional guidance, not a controlled study or a guarantee of results. Jonathan Bossenger on AI for WordPress developers

  • Get fluent in visual WordPress workflows. Learn the Block Editor, Site Editor, block patterns, and responsive editing so you can configure sites and help clients manage everyday changes. WordPress project roadmap
  • Build durable technical fundamentals. HTML, JavaScript, data and API integration, accessibility, performance, security, testing, and debugging help you assess and improve what tools and plugins produce. BLS specifically includes coding, testing, application choice, and performance in its description of web-development work. BLS: Web developers
  • Use AI output as a draft, not an unchecked deliverable. Inspect changes, run tests, and check behavior and security in the context of the actual site. Automated output still needs someone accountable for whether it works.
  • Improve discovery and communication. Clarifying goals, users, content, integrations, constraints, and the cost of failure helps you recommend a suitable solution instead of merely building the requested feature literally. BLS: Web developers
  • Keep learning as the platform changes. WordPress’s 2026 goals describe credentials as a future direction; they do not establish a current credential scheme. The project’s education programs are a place to follow as resources develop. WordPress project goals for 2026

So, will WordPress replace web developers?

WordPress is expanding what site owners and editors can do without a developer, and AI may accelerate parts of the work. That puts pressure on routine production tasks—not necessarily on the full role of building a reliable site around real business needs. The strongest available employment context still shows projected U.S. growth for a broad web-development and design group, but cannot settle the outlook for WordPress specialists. Developers who combine platform fluency with sound judgment, integration skills, testing, and maintenance are better equipped for the changing mix of work.
