If you’re heading to a Black Hat cybersecurity event for the first time, start by deciding what you want to learn and checking the details for your specific event edition. Black Hat includes technical training, research presentations and demonstrations—not just beginner classes. These four tips will help you choose what fits, plan your time and avoid assuming a course labeled “beginner” has no prerequisites.

1. Choose the kind of experience you want

Black Hat’s program includes three distinct formats. Pick sessions based on whether you want structured instruction, exposure to current security research or a look at tools in action; don’t assume every part of the event is a class. The organizer describes the formats in its event overview.

Format Best fit What to expect
Trainings Building practical knowledge through instruction Technical cybersecurity courses. Black Hat says offerings may be in person, online or self-paced; subjects and availability vary. See the Training overview.
Briefings Understanding security research and ideas Research-focused presentations, rather than a substitute for a structured course.
Arsenal Seeing security tools demonstrated Demonstrations of tools, useful for exploring what they do and how they are presented.

For a first visit, choose around your current interests and skill level. You do not need to treat the full program as a checklist to complete.

2. Check pass access and attendee details for your edition

Pass access, badge collection and other logistics can differ by event and year. Black Hat USA’s 2026 attendee resources, for example, link to pass access information and provide badge collection details for that edition. Use the attendee page for the event you plan to attend, and confirm its instructions rather than carrying over dates, venues or procedures from another year or region.

3. Use the event app to make a realistic schedule

Black Hat describes its event app as supporting schedule-building, networking, venue navigation and sponsor browsing on its attendee resources page. Use those functions to map out the sessions you care about and locate event information; they do not guarantee a particular networking or navigation experience.

  • Mark the sessions that matter most to you before filling every available slot.
  • Leave room to move between activities and adjust if your priorities change.
  • Check the current edition’s app and attendee information for available features and access details.

4. Read training prerequisites before choosing a hands-on course

A “beginner” label does not necessarily mean a course starts at zero. Review the stated prerequisites, duration and delivery format for the specific course you are considering. Black Hat Trainings cover technical cybersecurity topics, but course offerings and availability vary.

A historical example makes the distinction clear: a 2025 DEF CON course listing described a course as beginner-level while still expecting familiarity with basic networking, security and programming concepts. That was a DEF CON course, not a current Black Hat offering, so it illustrates why to read prerequisites rather than predict requirements for a Black Hat class. Its laptop requirement was specific to that course and should not be treated as a general event requirement.
