For most U.S. homes with an exposed screw-in outdoor floodlight, start by checking whether the fixture calls for an E26-base, wet-location-rated LED PAR38. That is a common fit, not a universal one: bulb shape, dimensions, beam angle, fixture rating, and control compatibility all matter. A “floodlight bulb” describes a job, not one standard bulb.

What counts as a floodlight bulb?

A floodlight bulb is a replaceable lamp that sends light in a directed or broad beam. It may be a screw-in reflector bulb in a security fixture, a landscape spotlight, or a recessed ceiling lamp. An integrated LED floodlight is different: its LEDs are built into the fixture, so there is no ordinary bulb to replace.

Security fixtures often have one or two replaceable sockets and may include motion sensors. Landscape systems can use PAR lamps, MR16 lamps, or other formats, depending on their voltage and sockets. Read the fixture label and instructions before choosing a replacement.

Know the bulb shapes and bases

PAR and BR describe reflector lamp families, not interchangeable fittings. Their numbers indicate approximate diameter in eighths of an inch: PAR38 is about 38/8 inches, or 4.75 inches across. Individual products can differ in overall length and other dimensions.

GU10 Varies by lamp Twist-lock base, commonly line-voltage; not an E26 screw-in
A19 General bulb shape Omnidirectional general-purpose lamp; usually not a substitute where reflector optics are required

Feit’s [PAR lamp guide](https://www.feit.com/collections/par20-par30-spotlight-bulbs) gives common PAR sizes and applications. LEDVANCE explains [PAR and BR construction and typical beam tendencies](https://www.ledvance.com/en-us/professional-lighting/insights/blog/lighting-basics/par-vs-br-bulbs). Those tendencies are useful, but the individual lamp specification decides the actual beam.

PAR or BR: choose for the beam you need

PAR means parabolic aluminized reflector. These lamps generally give more controlled, directional light. BR means bulged reflector; BR lamps generally spread light more broadly and softly, with less sharply defined beam edges. These are tendencies, not guarantees: check the stated beam angle and distribution.

Lighting job Good starting point Why
Broad, soft room illumination BR30 or BR40 Usually a wide, diffuse distribution
Outdoor security lighting PAR38 Directional optics and high-output options are common
Tree or façade accent PAR30 or PAR38 spot/flood Lets you aim and control the beam
Small track-light head PAR20 Compact reflector diameter
Six-inch recessed can BR30, BR40, or PAR30 Choose based on trim clearance and desired beam, not opening size alone
Tight display or architectural accent Narrow-beam PAR Concentrates light on a smaller target

BR beams are commonly 90° or wider, while PAR beams are generally about 45° or narrower, according to [LEDVANCE’s comparison](https://www.ledvance.com/en-us/professional-lighting/insights/blog/lighting-basics/par-vs-br-bulbs). Exact products vary. A BR30 or BR40 may fit a nominal six-inch recessed opening, but verify the trim, housing depth, and fixture instructions; [Feit’s reflector-lamp listings](https://www.feit.com/collections/flood-spot-lighting) provide examples, not a fit guarantee for every can.

Choose flood or spot by beam angle

Beam angle describes the width of the light cone. Labels are not standardized across every maker: a 40° lamp may be called a flood by one manufacturer, while a similar angle may receive a different label elsewhere. Check the number on the product specification rather than relying on “spot” or “flood” alone.

  • About 25° or less: A spot or tightly focused accent beam.
  • About 25°: A narrow flood in some product categories.
  • About 35°–45°: A common PAR flood range.
  • About 60° or more: A wide flood; BR distributions are often wider still.

These are common category conventions, not hard definitions. Feit lists [PAR38 spot and flood options](https://www.feit.com/collections/par38-outdoor-flood-light-bulbs) and [reflector lighting examples](https://www.feit.com/collections/flood-spot-lighting); [Lutron’s PAR lamp page](https://www.lutron.com/us/en/lighting/lamps-track-lights/par-lamp?sku=S38) shows that beam options are model-specific.

  • A beam that is too narrow can create a bright hotspot, dark edges, and glare while leaving useful ground uncovered.
  • A beam that is too wide spreads output over more area, reducing intensity on a particular target and potentially spilling into windows or neighboring property.
  • For broad coverage, two properly aimed fixtures can work better than one very bright, narrowly aimed lamp.

Compare brightness with lumens, not watts

Lumens describe total visible light output. Watts describe electrical power use. A “watt equivalent” is a manufacturer’s comparison with an older incandescent or halogen lamp, not a precise universal conversion. For a focused beam, candela or CBCP (center-beam candlepower) can also help compare intensity in the direction the lamp points.

PAR38 output varies considerably, even among screw-in LEDs. Feit lists a 13–15 W range producing about 900–1,050 lumens and describes it as comparable to a 90 W halogen PAR38. Westinghouse lists a [15 W, 1,350-lumen PAR38 with a 35° beam](https://westinghouse.com/products/15-watt-90-watt-equivalent-par38-flood-dimmable-indoor-outdoor-led-light-bulb-with-color-temperature-selection). Feit’s [high-output 29.4 W PAR38](https://www.feit.com/collections/par38-outdoor-flood-light-bulbs/products/29-4w-250w-replacement-bright-white-3000k-e26-base-dimmable-par38-high-output-led-par38dm2650-830-gb) is listed at 2,650 lumens and compared by the manufacturer with a 250 W incandescent. Those are product-specific claims, not a watts-to-lumens rule.

  • Porch or entry: Moderate output often avoids uncomfortable glare at close range.
  • Path or landscape accent: A controlled lower-output beam can make a target more visible than a very bright wide flood.
  • Driveway or security area: Consider distance, fixture height, aiming, and spill as well as lumens.
  • Large yard or commercial area: A dedicated multi-fixture or integrated floodlight system may provide more even coverage than a single screw-in lamp.

Choose the beam first, then enough output for the target. Increasing lumens does not fix a badly aimed fixture and can increase glare.

Select color temperature and color quality

Correlated color temperature (CCT), measured in kelvin, describes whether light looks warm or cool; it does not measure brightness. A practical guide:

Color temperature Appearance and common use
2200K–2700K Warm or amber; often comfortable for residential and hospitality settings
3000K Warm-neutral; a common residential and outdoor compromise
4000K Neutral to cooler white
5000K Daylight-like and visually crisp; can feel harsher or increase perceived glare

Higher CCT does not automatically improve security. Appearance, contrast, glare, and spill are affected by the lamp and its placement; CCT alone does not determine useful illumination. Some products let you select a setting: Westinghouse lists 2700K–5000K options, and [Keystone’s PAR range](https://www.keystonetech.com/all-products/lamps/general-purpose-led/par-bulbs) includes models with selectable settings across that range.

CRI (color rendering index) describes how faithfully a light source renders colors compared with a reference. Around 80 CRI is common for general lighting; 90+ CRI can be preferable for landscaping, artwork, food, retail displays, or detailed exterior surfaces. High CRI does not by itself mean more brightness, longer life, or better weather resistance. The cited Westinghouse PAR38 is listed at 80 CRI, while Lutron’s premium [Ketra S38](https://www.lutron.com/us/en/lighting/lamps-track-lights/par-lamp?sku=S38) is listed at 90+ CRI.

Check location and enclosure ratings

Use the fixture instructions to determine the required location rating. In general, a dry-location lamp is for areas without ordinary moisture exposure; a damp-location lamp is for moisture-prone areas without direct exposure to rain or water; and a wet-location lamp is approved for exposure to water. A covered porch may be damp rather than wet, but the fixture’s own rating and instructions govern. Feit says exposed outdoor fixtures require lamps rated for wet locations in its [PAR38 outdoor guidance](https://www.feit.com/collections/par38-outdoor-flood-light-bulbs).

  • Do not treat vague “indoor/outdoor” wording as a substitute for the specific wet- or damp-location designation.
  • A wet-rated bulb does not make an unsuitable fixture or damaged socket safe.
  • Keep fixture seals, gaskets, lenses, and drainage paths intact; moisture, condensation, corrosion, and thermal cycling can shorten lamp life.
  • Check enclosed-fixture approval separately. LED electronics still need to shed heat, and not every wet-rated lamp is approved for a fully enclosed housing.

The cited [Westinghouse PAR38](https://westinghouse.com/products/15-watt-90-watt-equivalent-par38-flood-dimmable-indoor-outdoor-led-light-bulb-with-color-temperature-selection) and [Feit high-output PAR38](https://www.feit.com/collections/par38-outdoor-flood-light-bulbs/products/29-4w-250w-replacement-bright-white-3000k-e26-base-dimmable-par38-high-output-led-par38dm2650-830-gb) are listed as suitable for enclosed fixtures. Do not infer that approval from “LED,” “outdoor,” or “wet rated”; find the explicit product specification.

Match the base, voltage, and physical fit

E26 medium screw bases are common in U.S. residential floodlight sockets, but the fixture label is authoritative. MR16 lamps often have GU5.3 pins and may run on a low-voltage landscape transformer; GU10 lamps use a twist-lock base. A line-voltage E26 lamp is not a substitute for a low-voltage system unless the equipment is designed for it.

  • Record the existing bulb family, base, voltage, wattage, diameter, and overall length before shopping.
  • Measure the available width and depth, including clearance behind any protective lens.
  • Check whether the lamp’s neck and reflector sit correctly in the socket and aim as intended.
  • Never force a bulb into a socket or allow it to contact the housing or lens.

Dimensions vary by model even within PAR38. Feit lists one high-output example at about 4.7–4.75 inches wide and about 5.2 inches long; Westinghouse lists a maximum overall length of 5.31 inches for its 15 W PAR38. These are specifications for those products, not fixed dimensions for every PAR38.

Check dimmers, sensors, and smart controls

A lamp must be explicitly labeled dimmable to use it with a dimmer. The dimmer also needs to support LED loads and the lamp’s load range. Older incandescent dimmers or dimmers with minimum-load requirements can cause flicker, buzzing, or dropout at low settings. Feit and Westinghouse both specify compatible LED dimmers for the cited dimmable lamps.

  • Easy to Install: Standard Par38 outdoor led flood light, standard E26 medium screw base, no need to find additional fixtures to mount this lamp. easy to install into the E26 socket.

Photocells, timers, motion sensors, and smart switches add another compatibility check: some control circuits do not work reliably with low-power LED loads. Symptoms can include cycling, faint glow when supposedly off, failure to start, or failure to turn fully off. Check both lamp and control-device instructions, including supported load and startup requirements.

A smart bulb can also lose connectivity or functionality if a wall switch, photocell, or motion sensor cuts its power. That can make a network-dependent smart lamp unsuitable as the only source for essential security lighting. Choose a compatible control system rather than assuming that “dimmable” or “smart” guarantees operation in every fixture.

LED, halogen, CFL, or integrated fixture?

Option Advantages Trade-offs
LED replacement bulb Lower energy use than comparable halogen output; long rated life; instant-on; broad choices of beam, CCT, dimming, and smart features Can cost more than basic incandescent lamps; control compatibility varies; heat, moisture, and power quality affect electronics; glare and color quality vary by product
Halogen Familiar warm appearance, good color rendering, and generally predictable dimming Higher energy use and heat, shorter life; less attractive for long operating hours
CFL Can use less energy than incandescent May start slowly, perform less well in cold conditions, and be inconvenient to dim
Integrated LED fixture Fixture and optics can be designed together; often offers coordinated coverage, controls, and weather sealing When the LED module or driver fails, the fixture may need replacement; hardwiring can be required; later changes to beam or CCT may be limited

Rated life is not a guarantee of failure-free service: it is based on defined conditions and may refer to lumen maintenance. Heat, moisture, voltage quality, and switching frequency can change real-world results. For a very large area or a fixture repeatedly failing from weather or heat, replacing the whole fixture with a properly rated design may be more suitable than fitting a brighter bulb.

A quick buying checklist

  1. Turn off power before removing the lamp; for hardwired work, turn off the breaker.
  2. Read the fixture label and record bulb shape, base, voltage, maximum wattage, and physical clearance.
  3. Determine whether the location is dry, damp, or wet, and check the fixture rating.
  4. Choose the job: area coverage, security, landscape accent, wall wash, recessed room light, or tight spotlight.
  5. Select a beam angle for that job before comparing maximum brightness.
  6. Compare lumens and, for focused spots, candela or CBCP; treat watt equivalents as a comparison label.
  7. Choose CCT and CRI for the setting and colors you want to see.
  8. Confirm explicit dimmable, enclosed-fixture, and location approvals as applicable.
  9. Verify compatibility with photocells, motion sensors, timers, dimmers, or smart controls.
  10. Check diameter and overall length, install without forcing the lamp or altering seals, then test at night and adjust aim before buying a brighter bulb.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • Flicker, buzz, or low-end dropout: Check whether the lamp is dimmable, whether the dimmer supports that LED, and whether the load is within its range. With sensors or photocells, verify LED-load compatibility.
  • Delayed start, cycling, or faint glow while off: Check the control device’s load requirements and whether it is cutting power or leaking current through the circuit; follow fixture and control instructions rather than bypassing protective components.
  • Premature failure or condensation: Check the wet/damp rating, fixture seals, enclosure approval, operating temperature, and signs of water intrusion. A bulb rating cannot compensate for a damaged or unsuitable fixture.
  • Bulb will not fit or aim correctly: Compare base, diameter, overall length, reflector depth, and socket orientation with the old lamp and fixture label. Do not force it.
  • Bright spot but poor coverage: Re-aim the fixture or choose a wider beam; more lumens in a narrow beam may intensify the hotspot without lighting the edges.
  • Excessive glare or spill: Aim downward, use shielding where the fixture permits, choose a warmer or lower-output lamp, or use multiple lower-output fixtures.
  • Tripping breaker or visible damage: Stop using the fixture and have the circuit or fitting assessed by a qualified electrician.
