WordPress lets you organize Pages into parent-and-child hierarchies without installing a plugin. If the standard Pages screen makes a large site difficult to manage, the Nested Pages plugin adds an expandable tree with drag-and-drop reordering and nesting. The key distinction: page hierarchy organizes content; a navigation menu is a separate structure unless you choose to synchronize it.
When to use a parent page and subpages
WordPress Pages are intended for non-chronological content, unlike Posts, which normally appear in reverse chronological order. A parent page can group related subpages into a hierarchy, and the page permalink reflects that hierarchy. See WordPress documentation on creating Pages.
A parent-child relationship does not automatically determine how every theme displays navigation. You can add a Page to a navigation menu, but the hierarchy and the menu are distinct; check your site’s menu and front end after restructuring.
Create a subpage with WordPress’s built-in settings
- Open Pages and add a page, or edit an existing one.
- In Page Attributes, choose the intended parent page.
- If the site’s theme or menu uses page ordering, set the Order value as needed.
- Save or publish the page. Confirm it appears under the intended parent and that its public URL is correct.
This native workflow is enough when the page list is manageable and editors are comfortable working in the standard interface. No plugin is required to create the hierarchy.

What Nested Pages adds
Nested Pages on WordPress.org replaces the usual Pages management screen with an editable, sortable tree. Its listed features include drag-and-drop ordering and nesting, enhanced quick edit, bulk page creation, and support for enabling its interface on post types through settings. The listing also describes touch-device support.
To reorder a page, hover over its row, grab the handle, and drag it. Move it to the right beneath another page to nest it under that parent; the interface provides an indentation cue. After installing and activating the plugin, open Pages to use the tree. A Default Pages link remains available unless hidden in settings. Plugin options are under Settings > Nested Pages, where you can enable or configure the interface by post type.

Understand the generated-menu behavior before enabling sync
Nested Pages can mirror the page structure into a native WordPress menu. According to the plugin listing, menu synchronization is enabled by default and creates a menu named Nested Pages. You can disable sync from the Nested Pages screen.

If you intend to customize a menu independently, account for that behavior before syncing again. The plugin listing also says that disabling page sync may improve save time on sites with a very large number of pages; it does not quantify the improvement.

Choose the approach that fits your site

Prefer the built-in workflow when you have a manageable number of pages and do not need a visual tree. Consider Nested Pages if editors often restructure the site, need to see its hierarchy at a glance, or want to manage supported post types in the same interface. This is a feature-based choice, not a performance comparison.

The listing reports version 3.3.2 and PHP 8.0 minimum at the time reflected in the source material; these directory details can change and do not guarantee compatibility with every WordPress site. It also reports 90,000+ active installations, a changing directory count rather than a measure of satisfaction or results.
