Google Tag Manager gives you control over those events; Site Kit can connect Google services but does not set up every click event on its own. A WordPress analytics plugin such as MonsterInsights is another option if you prefer a plugin-led workflow.
Choose what you want to measure
Start by defining the action and what you need to learn from it. A click is not automatically a meaningful outcome: someone clicking a phone link differs from someone submitting a form or completing a purchase.
- Outbound link: a link from your site to another domain, including an affiliate destination.
- Internal CTA: a button or link that sends a visitor to another page or section on your site.
- Download or telephone link: a file download or a tap on a
tel:link. - Form or ecommerce action: a submission or purchase, which should be tracked as its own action rather than inferred from a button click.
Use names that describe the action clearly, such as cta_click or affiliate_click. For internal buttons, identify the target using a stable selector or data attribute rather than visible button text, which may change during a design or copy update.
Track outbound links with GA4 enhanced measurement
GA4 enhanced measurement can record outbound clicks without adding page-specific click code. Google describes this as detecting an outbound click whenever a visitor clicks a link that leads away from your domain: GA4 enhanced measurement events. This is useful for external destinations, but it does not automatically cover every internal CTA.

- In your GA4 property, open Admin, then Data streams, and select your web data stream. Google may adjust interface labels over time.
- In the enhanced measurement settings, confirm that Outbound clicks is enabled.
- Click an external link on your site in a test session. In GA4 DebugView or real-time reporting, look for the
clickevent and inspect itslink_urlparameter to confirm the destination was recorded. - If the event does not appear, check that the page is using the intended GA4 property and that consent or tag-blocking settings are not preventing measurement.
Outbound click events are useful for understanding which external destinations visitors follow. If you need to distinguish affiliate links from other external links, add a separate event or parameter through your implementation rather than assuming every outbound click represents an affiliate action.
Track internal buttons with Google Tag Manager
For an internal button or link, create a custom GA4 event and fire it only when the intended element is clicked. Google’s developer documentation describes event tracking for interactions such as link clicks and purchases, including custom gtag('event', ...) calls: GA4 event documentation.

- In Google Tag Manager, create a trigger for the specific button. A click trigger can use a stable CSS class, element ID, or data attribute attached to that button.
- Create a GA4 event tag and connect it to the Google tag or GA4 configuration used on the site. Give the event a consistent name, for example
cta_click, and include useful parameters such aslink_urlor a concisebutton_location. - Set the trigger to match only the intended element. Avoid broad rules such as “all clicks” if the event is supposed to represent one particular CTA.
- Use GTM Preview to check that the trigger fires on the intended button and not on nearby elements. Then verify the event in GA4 DebugView or real-time reporting.
- After validating the event, publish the GTM container. Keep event names and parameters consistent so reports remain interpretable after site updates.
For sites where adding GTM is not appropriate, a developer can send an event directly with gtag('event', 'cta_click', {...}) when the relevant action occurs. The important requirement is not the method but that the event represents the action you intend to count and fires once per intended action.
Pick the WordPress setup that fits
| Method | Best for | Strength | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| GA4 enhanced measurement | Outbound links and supported standard interactions | Records outbound clicks without page-specific code | Does not automatically cover every internal CTA |
| Google Tag Manager with GA4 | Internal buttons, custom events, and conversions | Lets you define triggers, event parameters, and naming | Requires tag and trigger configuration |
| Site Kit with GA4 or GTM | WordPress administrators who want Google services connected in WordPress | Connects services and surfaces Analytics data | Site Kit alone cannot configure all event tracking |
| MonsterInsights | WordPress users who prefer a plugin workflow | Its documentation covers outbound links, button clicks, affiliate links, downloads, telephone links, forms, and ecommerce events | Features and reporting can depend on the plan, and the setup relies on a third-party plugin |
Site Kit’s own documentation says event tracking cannot be configured exclusively within Site Kit; use Google Tag Manager and/or GA4 for event configuration: Site Kit event tracking. MonsterInsights describes its click-tracking capabilities in its documentation: outbound link tracking and button click tracking. Review the plugin’s current plan details before relying on a particular feature.
Validate events before treating them as results
Test in a staging site or a low-risk context before relying on click data. Confirm that the event fires for the intended action, includes the expected destination or button information, and does not count twice. A misconfigured trigger can make a report look precise while measuring the wrong interactions.
- Use GA4 DebugView or real-time reporting to confirm the event name and parameters.
- Test the click once and check that one intended action produces one event.
- Test nearby links and buttons to make sure they do not trigger the same event accidentally.
- Retest after changing the button markup, GTM container, analytics plugin, or consent settings.
Only mark a custom event as a key event (the current GA4 term for a conversion) after confirming that it fires reliably and represents a meaningful action. A button click is not proof that a form was accepted or a purchase completed; track the successful submission or transaction when that is the outcome you care about.

Account for consent and cross-domain journeys
Analytics collection must follow the privacy and consent requirements that apply to your visitors and implementation. A consent banner or tag-consent configuration may prevent analytics events from being sent until permission is granted, so validate behavior under the consent states your site supports.
If a visitor moves between domains that you control, assess whether cross-domain measurement is needed to keep that journey coherent in GA4. An ordinary outbound click records the destination link; it does not by itself establish that the visitor was recognized across domains or completed an action on the other site.
