To stop comment emails without disabling comments, go to Settings → Discussion in your self-hosted WordPress dashboard. Under Email me whenever, clear the checkbox for the notifications you want to stop, then click Save Changes. The two checkboxes control new-comment emails and moderation alerts separately.

Turn off comment emails in self-hosted WordPress

  1. Sign in to your WordPress admin dashboard.

  2. Go to Settings → Discussion.

  3. Find the Email me whenever section.

  4. Clear Anyone posts a comment to stop emails when someone comments on a post you authored.

  5. Clear A comment is held for moderation to stop alerts when a comment enters the moderation queue.

  6. Click Save Changes.

WordPress describes these as controls for when authors and administrators receive comment or moderation notifications. See the WordPress.org Discussion Settings documentation.

What the two notification settings control

Setting Who receives the email What it covers
Anyone posts a comment The author of the post An email for each comment when the setting is enabled.
A comment is held for moderation The site administration email configured under Settings → General; eligible post authors may also receive it. A notification when a comment is held for moderation.

WordPress documentation uses “me” to refer either to a post author or to the administrator whose address is used for site administration. Details are in the WordPress.org comment moderation documentation.

Turning off emails does not close comments

These checkboxes change email notifications, not whether visitors can comment. To close comments on one existing post, edit it and set its Discussion option to Closed. To close comments on several posts, open Posts, select the posts, choose Edit, set Comments to Do not allow, and update them. See WordPress.org’s comments documentation.

Why older posts may still accept comments

Global discussion defaults generally apply to future content. Existing posts may keep their own comment settings, so close comments on those posts individually or use the bulk-edit method above if you want to stop comments on older content. The Discussion Settings documentation explains the defaults.

WordPress.com uses a different settings interface

If your site is hosted on WordPress.com, follow its Discussion Settings support guide rather than assuming the self-hosted dashboard labels and controls will match. Account-level notification controls and labels can differ.

When the built-in checkboxes are not enough

If you need custom rules about which recipients receive moderation emails, WordPress provides developer filters such as notify_moderator. This requires code-level customization; ask a WordPress developer if you are not comfortable working with hooks. The filter is documented in the WordPress developer reference.
