For a one-off screenshot, use Chrome DevTools to hide the notification element. For repeatable captures, use Playwright’s screenshot style option with a selector that matches that site’s banner. Both methods change what is visible in the image; neither automatically records an accept or reject consent decision.
Choose the method that matches your job
| Method | Best for | Repeatable? | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome DevTools: Inspect and Hide element | A quick manual capture | No; normally a temporary page edit | You must locate the correct banner node on each site |
Playwright screenshot style |
Automated screenshot runs | Yes, while the selector and markup remain stable | Every site may use different markup, an iframe, or a component boundary |
| Site preference controls or cookie management | Testing a fresh or returning visitor state | Sometimes | Changes browser/site state rather than merely changing the image |
| ScreenshotNeo | API and agent-based captures without browser setup | Yes | Requires an API key and an HTTP request |
Use a consent control when your purpose is to make an actual privacy choice. Use visual hiding only when the deliverable is a clean screenshot and you are not claiming that tracking was accepted, rejected, or disabled.
Hide a cookie banner for one screenshot in Chrome
- Open the target page in Chrome and wait until the notification is visible.
- Open DevTools with
F12,Ctrl+Shift+I(Windows/Linux), orCmd+Option+I(macOS). - Activate the Inspect tool (the pointer-in-a-box icon), then click the visible cookie notice or its overlay.
- In the Elements panel, check that the selected node represents the whole notice, backdrop, or fixed container—not the page’s main wrapper. Expand nearby nodes if the highlight covers too much or too little.
- Right-click the selected DOM node and choose Hide element. Chrome adds a temporary visual change to that node.
- Confirm that the page content underneath is still present and that no important navigation, modal, or article section disappeared with the banner.
- Capture the page with your normal screenshot method. Save the image and inspect it at full size before sharing it.
The edit is tied to the current document. A reload or navigation can restore the notice, so this workflow is intentionally suited to a one-off image rather than a production pipeline.

Consent systems often have a visible dialog and a separate dimming backdrop. Hiding only the text can leave a blank rectangle; hiding a high-level application container can remove the entire page. In the Styles and Elements panels, look for a fixed or sticky element whose box matches the notice. Do not assume a class containing words such as cookie or consent is safe: those words can also appear in unrelated content. The selector is an implementation detail of that site, not a universal standard.
Make automated screenshots clean with Playwright
Playwright’s screenshot API accepts a style stylesheet. Add a narrowly targeted rule after inspecting the target site:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
await page.screenshot({
path: 'page-without-notice.png',
fullPage: true,
style: `
[site-specific-banner-selector] {
display: none !important;
}
`
});
await browser.close();
Replace [site-specific-banner-selector] with the selector you found in DevTools. It is deliberately not a universal cookie-banner selector because no single selector works across sites. Playwright documents that screenshot styling can pierce Shadow DOM and apply to inner frames, but the correct selector and the frame structure still depend on the page you are capturing.
Keep the rule as narrow as possible
- Prefer a unique consent component ID or a selector scoped to the banner’s container.
- Hide the backdrop separately if it is a sibling of the dialog.
- Avoid broad attribute or text matches that could remove article content or buttons elsewhere.
- After every markup change, save a test image and compare the region behind the former overlay.
If your test must continue interacting with the page, Playwright also provides an overlay-handling approach that removes an overlay so the test can proceed. That is different from applying a stylesheet only for the final image: use interaction handling when the obstruction prevents clicks, and screenshot styling when you only need a clean visual result.
#1 Best Overall
Wait for the notice before capturing
Dynamic consent managers may appear after the initial document load. Wait for a page-specific selector, a short delay, or the condition your application uses before taking the screenshot. A rule applied before the banner is inserted can still work when it is added later, but your capture must also wait for the underlying page content and lazy images to finish loading. Validate both the absence of the notice and the presence of the content it covered.
Removing the image overlay is not choosing a cookie preference
A screenshot edit changes presentation. It does not, by itself, reject cookies, accept cookies, stop trackers, or write a consent record. Those outcomes are controlled by the site’s consent system and may involve cookies, local storage, a server-side account, or a consent-management platform.
If your objective is privacy or a reproducible “returning visitor” test, use the site’s own Reject, Settings, or preference controls and document the resulting state. Chrome DevTools also exposes stored cookies under Application > Storage > Cookies, where you can delete selected entries or all entries for a site. Deleting them resets stored state; it is not equivalent to clicking a site’s reject button and can remove useful preferences or sign-in state.
Check every clean screenshot
- Banner absent: inspect the saved file, not just the live browser.
- Content intact: headings, navigation, images, and the area formerly under the overlay should remain.
- No accidental overmatch: search the page for other elements that share the selector or class.
- Correct viewport: a mobile breakpoint can use different markup from desktop.
- Frame and component coverage: if the notice is rendered in an iframe or Shadow DOM, confirm that your selected rule reaches the actual element.
- Repeatability: run the capture after a reload and on a second visit; consent managers can change timing and structure.
Common failures and fixes
The notice comes back after reload
That is expected from a temporary DevTools edit. Reinspect and hide it again, or move the capture to Playwright with a tested selector.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOnly the text disappears
You selected a child node instead of the dialog container. Inspect upward in the DOM until the highlighted box includes the complete panel, then test whether the backdrop is a separate sibling.
The whole page vanishes
The selector is too broad or targets a root application container. Undo the rule, choose the smallest element whose box covers the notice, and scope the CSS to the site-specific container.
The selector works on desktop but not mobile
Responsive layouts commonly render different components. Inspect each viewport and maintain separate selectors when necessary.
The rule does not affect an iframe
Inspect the frame and its document rather than assuming a parent-page selector can reach it. Configure your automation around the page structure you actually observe, and verify the final file.

The notice is hidden but the page is still dimmed
Hide the backdrop as well, using its own narrowly scoped selector. Removing only the dialog can leave a full-screen overlay above the content.
The screenshot captures before the notice or page is ready
Wait for a stable page condition—such as a content selector, network idle, or a site-specific readiness signal—then capture. A fixed timeout alone may be unreliable on slow pages.
Images behind the banner are missing
Use a full-page capture only after lazy-loaded content has entered the viewport or the page has completed its own loading sequence. Check the output at the bottom of long pages, not just the top.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. It is the first option to try when you want clean shots without maintaining a browser script: it accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Each cleanup step can be turned off when you need the original page state.

A single GET request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is a complete cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot"
-d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY
--data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com
-o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all request parameters and response details. The same capture in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get(
"https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot",
params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"},
timeout=90,
)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({
access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY',
url: 'https://stripe.com'
});
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const bytes = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
await import('node:fs/promises').then(fs => fs.writeFile('shot.webp', bytes));
What the API does for this use case
- Clean output: consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed before the shot, instead of requiring a selector for every site.
- Billing status is explicit: bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing; response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed with
X-Page-VerdictandX-Billed. - Automation depth: options include full-page capture with lazy images, CSS-element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, clicks, waits, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, configurable cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification.
- AI workflow: its MCP server provides
take_screenshot,get_page_info, andcapture_pdffor Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
Because visual cleanup is separate from consent, treat ScreenshotNeo’s removal as a clean-capture feature, not evidence that a site’s tracking preference changed. If a consent decision is required, use the site’s controls or an explicit automation step before requesting the image.

Manual hiding has almost no setup cost but does not scale. Playwright is flexible and keeps the capture in your own environment, while selector maintenance, browser startup, page timing, and site-specific exceptions become your responsibility. For a service, use response verdict headers, choose caching deliberately, and set a timeout that matches the page’s normal load behavior. A cache hit can reduce work and is identified in the response rather than billed as a clean capture.
ScreenshotNeo includes every feature on every plan. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter ($5 for 3,000 shots), Growth ($15 for 15,000), Pro ($39 for 60,000), Scale ($99 for 250,000), and Business ($249 for 1,000,000); yearly billing gives two months free. Start with the free ScreenshotNeo account—1,000 screenshots a month, no card required—when you want the API or MCP workflow.
FAQ
Will hiding a cookie notice stop cookies from being set?
No. Hiding a DOM element changes the rendered image only. Cookie behavior depends on the site’s consent implementation and the actions you take in its controls.
Best Value
Can I use one CSS selector for every website?
No reliable universal selector is established. Inspect each target site and test the saved output, especially when frames, Shadow DOM, or responsive layouts are involved.
Should I delete cookies before taking a clean screenshot?
Only when you are deliberately testing a fresh browser state. Deletion can reset preferences and login state; it is not a substitute for a site’s reject or settings control.
Which approach is better for a scheduled screenshot job?
Use a tested Playwright stylesheet when you need local browser control, or ScreenshotNeo when an API/MCP request and managed cleanup are preferable. In either case, monitor the resulting image and the page’s readiness condition.
