If a Selenium screenshot is missing, blank, or reported as unavailable, first separate the browser capture from the file write: capture PNG bytes in memory, then check the output path and the return value from save_screenshot(). A normal WebDriver screenshot covers the current browsing context; element and full-page captures have different scope and constraints. The steps below help identify which layer is failing and choose the right capture method.
Identify what “image unavailable” means in your case
That wording does not identify one universal Selenium error. The image may not have been captured, may not have been written to disk, may be blank because the browser is showing the wrong state, or may simply be smaller in scope than expected. Selenium’s screenshot command operates on the current browsing context and returns image data; the official examples include driver and element screenshots across several language bindings (Selenium WebDriver documentation).
Use the failure’s observable behavior to choose a first check:

- The image exists but is blank, stale, clipped, or shows the wrong content: confirm navigation and rendering are complete, the intended context is active, and the viewport matches the layout you expect.
- The screenshot is valid but omits page content: determine whether you need the viewport, one element, or the full document. A standard screenshot is not automatically a full-page capture.
There is no established frequency statistic for a particular “image unavailable” message, so treat it as a symptom to diagnose rather than a specific Selenium error category.

Run a minimal Python diagnostic
This example checks browser capture and file output independently. It sets a predictable viewport, navigates to a page, tests the PNG bytes in memory, then checks the file-writing method’s Boolean result.

The example’s output path is suitable for many Unix-like environments; on another operating system, choose an absolute path in a directory the test process can write to. The Python API documents get_screenshot_as_png() as binary image data and save_screenshot() as a PNG file operation that reports an IOError through its return value (Python WebDriver API).
Check the browser session and current page
- Make sure the driver is still running. Do not call the screenshot method after
driver.quit()or after the session has otherwise ended. A failed capture can surface as a WebDriver exception. - Select the intended tab or window. Selenium captures the current browsing context. If your workflow opened another tab, switched windows, or left focus in an unexpected context, switch to the intended one before capture.
- Wait for the state you actually need. A completed call to
get()does not necessarily mean application-specific content, images, or animations have reached the visual state your test requires. Wait for a meaningful page condition before taking the screenshot rather than relying on an arbitrary assumption that the page is ready. - Capture before closing or navigating away. A screenshot command acts on the active state at the moment it runs; verify that the browser has not already navigated to another page or been torn down.
Selenium’s Java TakesScreenshot contract permits WebDriverException on failure and describes driver and element screenshots as best-effort operations (Java TakesScreenshot API). The same practical lesson applies: validate the session and target context before assuming a problem is in the image file.

Separate capture failures from filesystem failures
Interpret save_screenshot() correctly
In Python, use a full output path ending in .png. Check the Boolean it returns: False indicates the binding encountered an IOError, which points toward path or write handling—not proof that the page failed to render (Python WebDriver API).
- Use an absolute path while debugging, such as
/tmp/selenium-shot.pngon a Unix-like system or a known-writable project folder. - Confirm the parent directory already exists; a screenshot writer should not be assumed to create missing directory trees.
- Check that the process running Selenium has permission to write there and that the destination is not blocked by a read-only mount or other filesystem restriction.
- Keep the extension as
.pngwhen using these Python file methods.
Test PNG bytes or Base64 separately
When file output is suspect, call get_screenshot_as_png() or get_screenshot_as_base64() and inspect or write the returned value yourself. Chromium drivers also expose file, PNG-byte, and Base64 screenshot methods, which lets you isolate capture from filesystem handling (Chrome WebDriver API).
If in-memory capture succeeds but the expected file does not appear, focus on the destination and your write operation. If in-memory capture also fails or returns no usable data, go back to session, browser, and page state. This is a diagnostic split: it narrows the failing layer without presuming that every driver exposes identical behavior.

In Java, capture to a temporary file through TakesScreenshot, then copy it to an absolute destination. This separates WebDriver’s capture step from the final copy operation:

Element screenshots: verify the target is ready
Locate the element after the relevant page content has rendered, then call the element screenshot method. Selenium describes element capture as best effort for the element’s full content or visible portion (Java TakesScreenshot API). If the result is empty-looking or incomplete, verify the locator and the page state. An off-screen, zero-size, detached, or not-yet-rendered element is a plausible diagnostic cause based on that capture scope, not a guaranteed interpretation of a particular error message.
Full-page screenshots: use an explicitly supported method
If the request is for the entire document, use a full-page method supported by the browser and binding you are using. Firefox’s Python WebDriver API documents get_full_page_screenshot_as_file() (Firefox WebDriver API). Do not label a normal current-window screenshot “full page” just because the browser page can scroll.
Make layout and rendering more predictable
Screenshot output depends on what the page has rendered and the browser’s display dimensions. Selenium’s documentation notes that screen resolution affects web application rendering (Selenium WebDriver documentation). Set a known window size before navigation or capture when you are investigating responsive breakpoints, clipping, or unexpected blank regions:

If the application changes its layout based on viewport width, a different size can legitimately produce different content. When the screenshot appears clipped, check whether the issue is the viewport scope, a responsive layout, or the selected capture method before changing the filesystem code.
