The simplest way to add text-to-speech (TTS) to WordPress is to install a TTS plugin, activate it, choose which content types should show a player, and test the result on your live theme. Plugins differ in whether speech is produced by the visitor’s browser or by a cloud service, so select one based on voice control, costs, privacy, and placement requirements.
1. Choose a text-to-speech approach
WordPress does not provide one universal TTS switch. Plugin-directory listings document several implementation models and placement options. Review the selected plugin’s current documentation because features, limits, compatibility and settings can change.

2. Install a TTS plugin from WordPress
- Back up the site and confirm the plugin supports your current WordPress and PHP versions.
- In the WordPress dashboard, open Plugins → Add New.
- Search for a text-to-speech plugin. The WordPress text-to-speech tag lists multiple options; examples include Text To Speech TTS Accessibility, Reinvent WP Text to Speech, GSpeech TTS, Text to Speech – TTSWP and Accessibility Audio TTS.
- Read the listing’s support, update and compatibility information, then select Install Now.
- Click Activate. Open the plugin’s settings link, which may appear under Settings, its own dashboard menu, or the plugins list.
3. Configure where the player appears
Most plugins let you control automatic insertion, content types or manual placement. In the settings, select the post types that should receive audio—such as posts or pages—and choose whether the player appears before or after the article when those controls are available.

Automatic insertion
Listings for Accessibility Audio TTS and TTSWP describe settings for selected content types and automatic player placement. This is convenient for a site-wide rollout, but inspect archive pages, custom post types and templates before enabling it everywhere.
Block or shortcode placement
Use a plugin’s documented block or shortcode when only some articles need audio. AtlasVoice documents [atlasvoice], while TTSWP describes block and shortcode support. Syntax and attributes can change, so copy the current example from the plugin’s documentation rather than assuming these examples work for another plugin.

4. Set voices, language and generation options
For browser-based speech, choose from the voices exposed on the visitor’s device when the plugin allows voice selection. You cannot guarantee that every visitor will see the same voice list. For cloud services, connect the required provider account and review the provider’s current language, voice, character and billing terms.

5. Test the player before publishing it site-wide
- Open a representative post while logged out, or use a private browser window.
- Check desktop and mobile layouts at common screen widths.
- Start, pause, stop and resume playback; confirm controls have visible labels and a usable focus state.
- Test keyboard-only operation with Tab, Enter and Space.
- Listen to headings, links, numbers, abbreviations and punctuation that commonly expose pronunciation problems.
- Test a slow connection if audio is generated remotely, and check whether caching or optimization plugins interfere with playback.
- Only after testing, enable automatic insertion for the remaining selected post types.
6. Accessibility and privacy considerations
An audio player is an additional way to access written content; installing one does not by itself make a site WCAG-conformant or satisfy a legal accessibility obligation. Keep the original text, headings, semantic structure and keyboard access intact, and ensure the player does not trap focus or obscure content.
Browser speech may avoid sending article text to a separate voice provider. Cloud generation can involve transmitting text to a provider and storing generated files or caches. Read the plugin and provider privacy documentation, identify where audio is stored, and disclose processing where your jurisdiction or privacy policy requires it.

7. Troubleshoot common failures
No player appears
- Confirm the plugin is activated and the current post type is enabled in its settings.
- Check whether the theme template, page builder or a cache is bypassing automatic insertion.
- Try the plugin’s documented block or shortcode in the post content.
The voice list is empty or different on another device
This is expected with browser speech synthesis when the operating system supplies different voices. Test on the target browsers and consider a cloud voice workflow if consistent voice selection is essential.
Cloud audio will not generate
- Recheck API credentials, enabled services and account quotas.
- Confirm the provider supports the selected language and voice.
- Clear the plugin’s generated-audio cache after changing credentials or content.
- Review server logs and the provider’s current status or billing information.
Playback conflicts with the theme
Inspect JavaScript errors, defer or combine settings, and CSS rules affecting controls. Temporarily disable optimization features to isolate the conflict, then add an exclusion for the plugin scripts if necessary.

Which plugin should you start with?
Use the plugin directory listings as a shortlist, then decide with this checklist:
- Voice model: browser-native speech or remote generation?
- Placement: automatic insertion, block, shortcode or a combination?
- Audience: required languages and acceptable voice variation?
- Operations: audio generation, storage, caching, bandwidth and limits?
- Privacy: does article text leave your server, and where are files retained?
- Maintenance: recent updates, support responses and compatibility with your theme and other plugins?
- Accessibility: keyboard behavior, focus visibility, labels and preservation of the text alternative?
There is no evidence here for a universal winner. Select the option that meets your site’s requirements, verify its current documentation, and test it on the actual theme and devices your visitors use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I add text-to-speech without changing my theme?
Usually. A plugin can insert a player automatically or provide a block or shortcode, but you should test the live theme because templates, builders, caching and JavaScript optimization can affect placement and playback.
Does text-to-speech make my WordPress site legally accessible?
No. It adds an alternative way to consume text but does not by itself establish WCAG conformance or meet a legal obligation. Preserve accessible text, semantic markup, keyboard operation and visible controls.
Will every visitor hear the same voice?
Not with browser speech synthesis. Voices depend on the visitor’s browser and operating system. Cloud-generated audio can provide a more controlled workflow, subject to the provider’s supported voices and terms.
